BANGKOK: -- Thailand has promoted the cultivation of Hemp for industrial use with five provinces selected as sites for the growing under a five-year pilot project.

Hemp or what is called “Ganjong” looks very much like marijuana or “Ganja” as it technically is the same plant.

In the United States, Hemp is just as “illegal” to grow as marijuana is.

The demand for Hemp globally is high and at present, 27 countries have legalized l planting of the plant for industrial use.

Thailand Tobacco Monopoly (TTM) has revealed that it will be moving ahead with its plans to promote the growing  of Hemp after the cabinet has given approval of a 5-year pilot project to commercially grow Hemp in 5 provinces.

They are Chiang Mai, Chaing Rai, Nan, Tak and Petchabun.

According to Mr Daonoi Sutthi-Niphaphan, the director of the TTM, the growing of Hemp, a cannabis plant, especially when grown for its fiber, will be carried out at its Mae Cho Tobacco Experimental Station.

If proven successful, he said it will be introduced to farmers currently growing tobacco plants in the northern and north-eastern provinces.

I'd say that's a pretty good sign that legalization of the evil weed is imminent.

If it were just about any entity other than the tobacco monopoly (or maybe Pfizer or ThaiBev), I'd believe it's for industrial hemp.

Can foreigners own and run a hemp farm? If not can foreigners volunteer to work on hemp farms?

You can't "own" a hemp farm. You can own shares in a Thai company.

Agricultural work is a prohibited occupation, but work permits can be given to specialised occupations.

I'm not sure if a work permit for Quality Control is available or not.

I believe Thais (your friend down the road) need to get a license from the government to grow. As long as they are in the jungwat it should be no problem. I have a feeling people will sell seeds on their own for consumption and oils. Can't wait !!

but who sold them the seeds to start the farm?
surely they did not go out into the wild looking for them.

You can buy seeds from china. I'm not sure if you can legally import them. I know Australia has a great industrial hemp program. I also read about a guy from the Netherlands who came here to teach about it. He probably brought over a stash of seeds !

This is what puzzles me most. If they are growing industrial hemp for its multiple uses, you would expect the project to be put in the hands of a government run agribusiness or cloth making industry, not the tobacco monopoly.

Tobacco companies deal primarily with consumer products designed and marketed to be smoked. That's where their expertise lies. They have no expertise with raw materials for making fabrics or rope or whatever.

It's all very strange.
