Haze problem worsens in North as many provinces hit by wildfires

BANGKOK: -- MANY PROVINCES were affected by wildfires yesterday, causing the acute haze problem to intensify, while the Disease Control Department warned vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the infirm to stay indoors and wear face masks.

 

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said that due to worsening smog caused by wildfires, Lampang province had suffered from harmful air pollution levels for three days in a row.

 

The department’s director-general Chatchai Promlert said his department had been informed that wildfires in Nan, Payao and Surat Thani had ravaged more than 80 rai (13 hectares) of forestland.

 

“I have already ordered our local offices in these provinces to work with related agencies to extinguish the fires and build the firebreaks to control the wildfires spreading,” Chatchai said.

The word "wildfire" suggests that a blaze has been started naturally. But we all know who is responsible for the vast majority of these so-called "wildfires" in the north. 

haze sounds a little euphumistic.  let's call it what it is: smoke

We toured the north last month. We saw many fire but no one fighting these fires.

Exactly! While it's truly bone-dry up here (as usual around this time of year) i too call that 'reasoning' blatant BS still ...

wildland fires can be natural or man-made. man-made can be intentional (arson) or accidental (spark from equipment, lit cig butts, power lines, etc). i do agree with you, most wildfires in northern thailand are anything BUT accidental.

Well I am goimg to get my butt out of this polluted country, and back to the 

clean fresh air of Alberta.

There is no need to sugarcoat this big f637k up and pretend there aren't anyone to blame. It is not hot enough for things to combust on their own, so this can't be called wildfire. Also calling carcinogenic smoke a haze is laughable at best. 
Better say the truth and criticize the government for not giving a damn about this situation.

Wildfires? Really? Obviously learning their lines for a Thai TV reality show.

Of course. All down to the Thai rainmaking spell.

We drove to the South yesterday and even here ypu see 'misty' mountains. The hills near to Hua Hin and Chaam are all covered in smog. Farmers and hill tribes are burning whatever they get their hands on. Without a decent law enforcement, this problem will only get worse.

Gave up on Chiangmai & moved to Hua Hin. Best thing I have ever done. My lungs are very grateful
