Tax is mainly collected from businesses and purchases via VAT. Depending on your philosophy you may or may not like it.

I think it is not only the only workable system in Thailand but also saves building up a huge and expensive tax collecting organisation, that is constantly on the backs of the people who are trying to make a couple of Bahts to rub together.

90% of the population do not have to fill in the blasted forms, work out allowances and go through all the other nonsense that the West has imposed, originally to fund wars, but then to fund the State and its small army of self-serving jobsworthies all paying themselves over the top salaries, pensions and benefits, headed by the inept and incompetent politicians.

When I first arrived here a few years back I felt sorry for the poor people.

But after a while I realised there is a lot of oppurtunity in Thailand for people if they are not lazy.

The thing is you don't meet too many of these people as a newbie, because they are busy working. You generally just come across the lazy losers.

I tried to help out a few, but they do nothing to help themselves. I think a lot of the "stupid Thais" type comments on this forum are from posters that never moved on from the lazy and or stupid people. So they are surrounded by them all the time.

i used to tip these losers all the time, at the petrol pump etc but now I don't because I know they are just lazy frackers.

it really is a country, IMO, where the cream can rise to the top, and the sh1t sinks.

Now I only tip if the service is good (not lazy) or if someone is disabled.

Totally agree.

The barriers to setting up a small business and trying it out are very low.

In the West the government army of tax, health, employment, building inspectors come around before you even get started. Then the miserable bunch of whinging neighbours complain if they find out you are running a business in a "residential zone".

This makes, IMO, the economies of Asia much more resilient than the West.

... don't think we're surprised much here, are we, was to be expected, really.

I sure hope at least 'most' of it does some good to folks who'd really need it ...
