Australian Embassy site up for sale

Australian Embassy site up for sale

By The Nation

As construction of the Australian Embassy’s new premฌises near Lumpini Park nears completion, that country’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has decided to sell the site of the current embassy on Sathorn Road.

JLL has been appointed as the sole sales agent for the property.

The site occupies 7 rai 382 square wah (12,728 square metres) of freehold land on South Sathorn Road, one of Bangkok’s prime commercial and residential addresses.

Suphin Mechuchep, managing director of JLL Thailand, said the Australian Embassy’s site on South Sathorn Road offered one of the last large prime developฌment opportunities available on a freehold basis in the area.

Since the launch of the sales campaign, the site has already received strong interest from leading propertydevelopment companies. “To ensure that the site gets the widest coverage, we will also circulate details of the property to JLL’s offices around the world. This will be a very competitive bid,” Suphin said.

The Australian Embassy’s site on South Sathorn Road has been offered for sale by expression of interest. The closing date is early June.

The old location was a bit of a walk from the nearest MRT Lumpini and BTS Chong Nonsee stations, especially in hot season. Hopefully the new location is better.

First the Brits, then the Aussies... the Yanks to sell their prime site next? They know something we don't?

To be continued in tbe next episode.

The Aust govt will make a profit from this sale. Bet the money does not go to their massively expanding debt though.

It wasn't a prime site. That was the issue. It was not secure enough so a new Australian Embassy was built at an enormous cost to the Aussie taxpayer.

They didn't need a new Embassy in my opinion. Just new staff. So rude, so pathetically stupid and not at all there for it's Citizens.

Check out the google reviews. Disgraceful! Dozens of people with a bad experience.

I am sure if most people knew how much their country was spending on overseas Embassy's, staff expense accounts etc etc, there would be one hell of an uproar.

How much? I'm interested in hearing what you know about this. I'm ready to roar, up, down, whatever.

I hope you actually have some information and not just exaggerating for some personal agenda.

Oh, goody! We're going to get another shopping mall.  Just what Bangkok needs.

Plus, now the Notary Fees increased (01/01/2017) from 600b to 1750b....been challenging Bishop & Co to justify. DFAT reason: not increased since 2000, so applied av CPI of 2.7% for 16yr = 43% (by the way neither has GST, will that apply same principle???) + not on par with AUS "commercial providers" (237%) total 280%; don't use Comm providers, just bullshit!! . Minister Bishop weak, no comment, PM weak,  no comment, Other MPS no real interest, Media not big eough. AUS GOv't is nothing more than self serving pigs with snouts in taxpayers pocket.

If your Aussie & you care write to your local member & other MPs.....it's your money!!!

Politicians, Sir, only become politicians for the power, for the money or any combination of the two.

Anywhere in the world.

And for purely personal reasons.

I thought foreigners weren't allowed to own any land in Thailand ?

No just upgrading , using better wall protection materials and all the trimmings needed in this day n age like better clear exits and new tech to counteract against dish mic's and landline bugging.

Read it again.

I am generalizing.

No agenda.

I have just had first hand experiences of so much money being wasted with the Aus Embassy and I am pretty sure all countries are mostly doing the same.

I think eggers is right on the money in his post above.

Do you work at the Embassy? Does sound like it.

' If your Aussie '     ....    I am Australian, but I don't care anymore ....  australia has lost the plot on sooooooooo  many issues.   Common sense is non existent in decision making.

PC is rampant,  nanny state as far as I can see.

eg;  Guy get taken by a croc a few weeks ago up north ... he's fishing in croc infested rivers with signs posted everywhere ... he gets taken .. so the government orders wildlife authorities to go and find the croc and kill it.  How is going and killing several crocs going to bring the dead guy back ???  stupid reaction & thinking  imo.

eg;  Juvenile detention centre in NT now there's a royal commission to find out why these kids were punished so harshly ....     an inquiry costing millions for lawyers etc ....   wake up australia ,   do they think these kids are angels  ??  they steal, burn houses down etc.

I could mention many more stupid decisions ..  imo.

ok ....  I've had my rant for today.

The government In Aus crying so poor no money But there always seems to be money for government stuff You can bet your life nothing will be spared on this new building Last one had a fountain inside it. Wall to wall carpet. Maybe they can join the visa service to this new building saves you going to the other building

Been retired for 15 years this month! How time flies.

I was a public servant and did have occasion to visit embassies in the job, but never wanted a posting.

I too have strong thoughts about a-hole Australian governments, and have some first hand knowledge of wasteful practises, but, when someone sounds off, I think it's important to have knowledge and not just to generalise.  Too much of that happens all over this forum.

Australian government/politics, in a much more subtle way, is just as corrupt as Thailand, and heading towards the US system of complete sell-out..

Old news, this has been known for months, they are moving down near the Japanese Embassy.

will have free wifi, water fountain, free coffee and tea

kids play area, and

comfortable seats to whittle away the waiting hours to be served,

I agree with you 100%.

I visited the Australian Embassy in New York in 1999. I felt sick after seeing what was going on there. About 2500 sq m of floor space just on the one floor I knew about with 2 staff. Yes. Just 2.

I have also visited the Embassy here. What an absolute disgrace.

Love for 60 minutes to look in to this and do a report on wasted millions/billions but that will never ever happen.

Did you mention corruption? Correct again!

I haven't been to NY, but would have trouble believing there are only 2 staff in the Consulate-General there. (The embassy is in Washington).

I would think it would be a major centre for Austrade. I note the office is situated in the large Wells Fargo building, perhaps it was cheaper to lease a whole floor with thoughts on future expansion than a smaller space.

If there are now only a handful of staff, it seems like governments are making spending cuts, but it's not always easy to get out of lease agreements nor find cheaper office accommodation in the Big Apple.

And don't forget, a posting to NY, with an inflated title, is a major perk for a failed politician from the ruling party. He would need a big corner office and staff.

I stand corrected. It was Washington and I am quite sure it was the building you mentioned. It did seem like it was the whole floor but it really looked bad as 90% of the space was open carpet with nothing on it. You could have played indoor soccer there. This was 1999 though. I am sure of that. There was only 2 staff. I am sure of that. And if you find them they will remember me as I had plenty to say about wasting money. Seriously, you had to see it to even believe it.

I agree with you on the reaction to the crocodile attacks, but as for the RC , those kids aren't angels, that is true, but hooding them, abusing them, hosing them down etc. is a sure fire way to turn them into criminals.  That's why there is a royal commission, to clean up the juvenile detention centre industry and its poor culture.
