Laptop Ban

Featured Replies

Hi i see that there is now a laptop ban on , the map of what i can see is flights going from Arab airports to the uk,

i am going to the UK in July, with a stop over at an arab airport, this is just a heads up, as if i have to check in on another flight, my main suitcase would have gone a separate way to my walk on luggage, so i would imagine my laptop (or anyone who fogets the ruling) their laptop would be confiscated.people are still getting the walk on liquids allowance wrong so we can be sure someone will forget about this rule, anyone can see this logic, as wasn't the Lockerbie disaster put down to an explosive device in the planes hold.thoughts anyone ??

The UK ban applies to incoming flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.  So unless you are transiting through any of these then there will be no issues.

The US ban includes the more popular UAE and Qatar.

You laptop would not be confiscated. They would take it along with the bag it is in and give you checked baggage tag receipt for it. Same thing they do for oversize hand carry bags.

FYI it is not only lap tops, Any device larger than a smart phone cannot be taken on board.

I just ordered my stick computer, just in case there's a run on them.  About the size of a small (old timey) cell phone, plugs into an HDMI port of any hotel flat screen, comes with 4Gb RAM and Win 10.

Not as good as a laptop, obviously, but it's my backup -to salvage a business trip-  in case something happens to the checked laptop.

I miss the U3 (?) tech where I could load software, e-mail, etc on a USB chip and plug it into any computer anywhere and run my own programs without loading them onto the host computer.

Edit:  BTW, as easy as it would be for a terrorist to transit through a friendly 3rd country (I can think of one or two with eezy peezy visa requirements), I can't imagine this ban will not be extended beyond its current scope.  That's if it's not lifted first because it's pretty poorly conceived.

Even some large phones fall foul of the ban (16cm long, 9.3cm wide or 1.5cm deep). Kindles and tablets certainly do.

For the last few years laptops, powerbanks, batteries etc were being banned from being packed in checked luggage for safety reasons due to the chance of catastrophic fires in the hold whilst airborne. Now for safety reason we are being told they must be packed in the hold. The whole thing doesn't hold up as being a safety improvement. Note the countries that seem to be getting hammered by Islamic terrorism the most France, Germany, Belgium are not following this ban. Its  BS.

If it's Emirates via Dubai they have already reacted.

Passengers will need to declare 'banned' electronics before boarding US-bound flights. At the gate, these devices will be packed into secure boxes and stored in the aircraft's cargo hold, and returned to the travellers upon landing in the US.

So you have to separate from the laptop no earlier than at the gate in Dubai and the devices will be stowed separately.

One day we all will have to travel in underwear, flip-flops and bathing robe only
