A homeless man who allegedly confessed to starting a fire that caused extensive damage to the Thai-Belgian bridge in Bangkok last month was taken back to the scene for a re-enactment by Metropolitan Police chief Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn on Friday.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Samran Muangkhiew or “Ake Lok Nueng”, was arrested at the Thanyaburi Men Aid Centre in Pathum Thani on Thursday evening after a warrant was issued on March 15, based on CCTV footage.

Samran allegedly confessed to police that he dropped a cigarette on a pile of leaves near garbage bins under the bridge, resulting in the fire that caused structural damage to the bridge near Lumpini Park.

The blaze brought traffic to a standstill on February 28. Repairs to the bridge will take several months.
