Strong employment in the construction sector

Featured Replies

Cambodia’s construction sector was a thriving job market in the first quarter of 2017, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction said in its latest quarterly report.  According to the report,  between 48,000 and 50,000 people are employed on average each day while in Phnom Penh alone, up to 23,000 casual workers were hired on a daily basis.

The ministry added that wages for construction workers also increased in the first quarter of 2017 but stopped short of providing comparative data from 2016. The report stated that unskilled workers earned a daily wage of 35,000 riel ($8.75) to 40,000 riel ($10) while skilled workers earned up to 75,000 riel ($18.75) a day. Engineers and architects earned between $400 and $2,000 per month, the report added.

Land minister Chea Sophara forecasted that the construction sector is capable of maintaining strong growth throughout the rest of 2017.  “Consistent with this growth in the construction sector, which has been registered with [the Land Ministry], it saw an increase in 1,000 companies including 41 design companies and 959 construction companies,” Mr. Sophara said.  “Across the country, this amounts to 2,435 architects and 30,000 engineers. It creates from 190,000 to 200,000 jobs per day,” he added.
