A Chinese man died and another was injured when their SUV slammed into a lamppost in Sihanouk province early yesterday. Deputy provincial police chief Colonel Y Sokha said the accident happened at about 12.30am when the driver of a Toyota Alphard SUV crashed into the central reservation at high speed and collided with the lamppost.

“One Chinese man died immediately while another was seriously injured and taken to the hospital for treatment following the accident,” he said. Mr. Sokha did not identify the men but said, “The accident may have been caused by drunk driving.”

According to an Interior Ministry report, 55 people were killed and 226 were injured in 121 traffic accidents during the five days of Khmer New Year, up from 113 accidents and 52 fatalities during the same period in 2016. Last year, 1,717 people were killed in road accidents, while 6,600 were injured. On average four people die in traffic accidents every day in Cambodia.
