I don't think that's the objective. It's certainly not enough money if it is. It's not insurance. They're trying to recoup the costs of those foreigners who can't or won't pay after they've been treated. Last I heard, it was to the tune of 400 million baht a year. Which is a drop in the ocean compared to the two following metrics: - Income to Thailand from Medical Tourism (2024): US$ 15.4 billion - Income to Thailand from Tourism (2024): US$ 48.45 billion Medical cost burden of tourism is 2.6% of income from Medical Tourism Medical cost burden of tourism is 0.8% of income from total Tourism Reports often complain about the costs while omitting a balanced comparison with income and the overwhelming positives to the economy that tourists bring. -

Travel Rising Prices, Broken Systems Dim Thailand’s Tourist Charm
Wherever you are in life, at home or on holidays, everyone has their own preferences. There must be choice for everyone’s tastes, food, aircon or not. The argument is , it is much more expensive for tourists to come to Thailand today. Prices have shot up since Covid, flights, hotels, not necessarily street food. An average nice hotel in Phuket or Pattaya costs over 4 to 5000 baht a night, and are definitely not worthy of being called 4 stars. -

Here in Bangkok I see Thais are exhausted. No more land of smiles. Add to this our never ending static in their lives due to foreigners. The conundrum of course is that they are ever gracious as well. I'm feeling being made even more distant at times. I dress well, assume Thai manners in public, not unattractive for my age. I fear we're losing ground. Not a day goes by and something like this happens. Easily 356 farang die in this country annually due to dumb ass shl+ -

The older I get, the more of my luggage has wheels. I've been pushed aside more by people with big backpacks that turn around in tight spaces like the BTS/MRT. I'm guilty, too sometimes. I forget I have my laptop backpack on. Never have that issue with my roller bag. -
