GSI on downtrend as daily living costs remain high

BANGKOK, 18 May 2017 (NNT) – Government Savings Bank (GSB) has reported the Grassroots Economy Sentiment Index (GSI) as continuing to drop as the public is pessimistic about economy recovery and the cost of living remains high.

GSB Director Chartchai Payuhanawichai reported that a survey on citizens with a salary of less than 15,000 baht during the first quarter of this year set the GSI at 47.2 point, down from a figure of 49.9 just a quarter earlier.

The survey found most grassroots citizens believing economic recovery will remain sluggish as the cost of living remains high and employment remains elusive.

Looking 6 months ahead, the GSI is 48.4 points, boosted slightly by hope that the government will implement measures to improve the lives of grassroots people and that farm goods will rise in price.

While all other categories in the survey showed a downward trend, confidence in spending was slightly up due to government programs to enrich low-income earners.

Asked about how they receive information on jobs and living, 70 percent of those surveyed said they regularly sought out information on goods prices, government projects and the value of farm related products.

The respondents said they only sought information for the benefit of themselves and their family without the intention to alleviate themselves of debt or to amass savings.

GSI? Never heard of that before. Must be related to the government's happiness index, which of course is shattering records as Thais every day hold hands and sing "Kumbaya".
