Machete as check in luggage leaving Thailand

Featured Replies

Is it OK to bring a Machete as check in luggage leaving Thailand ?

I was given a quite big machete from Thai friends and I plan to bring it back home.

Just read that a gas mask was not legal so I start to wounder about my machete.

Any one that have a information or a good link with information about this.

Thankful for help

I don't see a problem in Thailand as long as it's already packed in the suitcase and you are not waving it about in the terminal. I would be more concerned with the laws in your home country.

I think that was the advice given to the guys recently arrested with bulletproof vests, too.

Why risk it?  Machetes could be considered farm tools, or lethal weapons depending on the mood of the x-ray guy.

I would join post #2.

Comparison with the bullet proof vest is not correct because the possession of such is forbidden (yes, kind of silly but TiT). And it should have been known as the guy has not been the first in trouble with such a vest.

A machete is a household item/tool.

No house here without at least one.

From time to time I myself swing it to cut some branches etc.

So for checked baggage they will hardly bother in Bangkok.

The OP's home country: completely different story.

Don't ask me.

But even the US TSA seems to allow machetes in checked baggage:

Well it's worth checking out with the airline. You can carry guns and ammo in your checked baggage and they are lethal weapons. Machetes can be bought in every town and village whereas the bullet proof vest are illegal. If was travelling with a machete I would check it out and not just rely on this thaivisa forum.
