One year after a failed coup in Turkey, Turkey’s ambassador to Phnom Penh still want the government to shut down Zaman International School (ZIS).  At a press conference at Turkey’s embassy in the capital on Friday to commemorate the one year anniversary of the failed coup, ambassador Ilhan Tug said he still wants the school to shut down.

Last year he alleged the school was connected to the suspected plotters of July’s failed coup in Turkey. The Turkish government were preparing documents and evidence to give to the Cambodian government in a bid to get the Zaman school closed, he said. Mr. Tug said he was also aware of the sensitivity of the matter in Cambodia, especially the number of schools in Cambodia.

“So we are trying to find some alternative options, for example taking note of the management of this school,” he said, adding that it was an option that he would urge the government to control this school.  Mr. Tug declined to give any details about submitting evidence and documents to the Cambodian government over accusation against ZIS.

Erdogan has arrested 47,000 people since the coup attempt, which event took the Turkish government completely by surprise. How is it possible that so many people were in the know while the Gestapo were not. There are worrying echoes of the way Hitler grabbed power in Germany in the 1930s.
