Airports Department Director General opens project for constructing levees to prevent Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport from being flooded

BANGKOK, 14 August 2017 (NNT) - The Director General of Airports Department opened the levee construction project to prevent the Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport from being flooded, after risk assessments showed that Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport was highly prone to floods.

Airports Department Director General Darun Saengchai and Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport Director Suksawat Sukwanno and Airport Department’s high-ranking officials gave a press conference on the launch of levee construction project and flood prevention system at Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport. The airport had to face a major flood at the end of 2016 and early 2017, resulting in a week-long cancellation of flights.

The Director General of the Department of Airports disclosed that Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport is flooded every year and Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusriphithak ordered a risk assessment of all 29 airports nationwide. Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport was confirmed as the airport most prone to floods. In light of the assessment, the airport requested 425 million baht budget to construct levees and an effective flood prevention system.

Authorities expect water volume during the rainy season to be equivalent to the volume of flood water during early 2017, assuring that the project will effectively neutralize the airport's flood risks.
