Man dead, two injured following police-chase car crash

UBON RATCHATHANI: -- A man was killed and his two friends injured when the car they were travelling in crashed into a bridge in Ubon Ratchathani province following a 100-kilometre police chase early Monday morning.

 

Police said the accident happened at about 1.30am at Huay Bung Kone Bridge in tambon Kham Pom, Khemmaraj district.

 

The impact of the crash sent the body of the driver, Panya Khaowong, 25, crashing through the windshield and he landed on the bridge’s sidewalk. He died at the scene.

 

The injured passengers were identified as Attthapol Putthakun, 25, and Patcharaporn Sripradit, 23.

 

Patcharaporn told police that Panya and Atthapol picked her up at a restaurant where she worked and they headed to an entertainment venue.

 

She said when Panay encountered a police checkpoint on Chayangkul Road in tambon Naimueang, Muang district, he refused to take an alcohol breath test and sped off.

 

She said police pursued them, with the chase ending when Panay crashed the car.

 

Pol Senior Sgt-Major Suriya Khunthong, who drove after Panya’s car, said the chase lasted about 100 kilometres through five districts of the province.

 

Suriya said he detected alcohol on Panay’s breath so he asked him to park on the roadside for a breath test but Panya sped off.

 

He said he drove after the car through Lao Sua Koke, Don Moddaeng, Trakarn Phuetphol, Kud Khao Pun and Khemmaraj districts.

 

He said the car was about 500 metres ahead of him when it hit the bridge.

I would think that 100 km. is a fairly long police chase.

Not bad- first reply managed to work him into a thread!

The problem is that after the first 50 kilometers, the police had time to discuss if they are really doing the right thing chasing someone that could very possibly be drunk and driving in a manner to avoid getting caught.

 

Seriously, what do you talk about in a Police car for and hour while chasing someone... 

Basic rule of policing number one. When you stop a car and want to question the driver, first switch off the engine and take the keys. 

 

You don't ask them to drive further, even to park, as they may as in this case flee, or if they are drunk, collide with something as they park.

 

Once they are out of the car, you or a colleague can park it to let other vehicles through.

 

Where do they get these clowns?

Sad to say they dont get much training.

Just like HollyWood movies. A policeman, a lawbreaker and 2 lucky idiots. 

Must have been a slow chase, the only time I see Police driving fast is when they are escorting a wannabe. Shows the driver was not wearing a seat belt .

Father forgive me i have sinned Lol Lol I think the biggest problem is the cops dont know the rules themselves. Corruption has def taken over. When you see people still riding bikes with no helmets when the law states you must wear a helmet shows the public just dont take the police force serious They think them as a big joke.

Clearly driver was not hiso....as he would have been able to say he was stressed at that moment but would come in for a breath/blood alcohol test next week if his schedule permitted it.

So what.. the criminals are to blame.. I mean refuse a test and speeding off IMHO reason enough to give chase.

 

And Yes they should put more effort in red bull.. but that does not mean that people should be allowed to run away from alcohol checkpoints.

Obviously, but I for one am happy that they at least check some people for alcohol. I rather have them check them all but now at least (started a while back) there are some more serious fines for driving if you are over the limit of alcohol.

 

Many foreigners here hate it because they finally found a place where they could drink and drive as it was no longer possible in their home country.

 

I find it a real crime to drive with alcohol, as normally they kill others not themselves. In this case the driver took himself out of the gene pool.. a bit harsh punishment and more then it should.. but he decided to make a run for it.
