HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn has graciously given Bt100 million to Siriraj Hospital for the construction of a new building.

Prof Dr Prasit Watanapa, the dean of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, said the King granted him an audience and bequeathed the money last Friday.

“The donation is for the construction of the Navamindrapobith 84th Birthday Anniversary [building] at Siriraj Hospital,” Prasit said.

“He [the King] hopes this new hospital building will benefit underprivileged people.”

Prasit said the donation comes from the sale of diaries featuring drawings by the King.

Construction of the new building is underway. Some parts of the building are slated to be open in March or April 2019.

HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej introduced the project.

He had received treatment at Siriraj Hospital for years until he passed away on October 13 last year.

It is his last project for Siriraj Hospital.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is now chair of the project’s fund-raising committee. The construction cost of the Navamindrapobith 84th Birthday Anniversary building is estimated at Bt5 billion, with the government providing Bt2 billion.

The building will feature 355 beds and 62 ICU rooms. There will be no VIP rooms.
