PATTAYA:--The Pattaya City Council has dropped plans to spend 21.7 million baht on additional closed-circuit television cameras, saying the police should pick up the tab.

Mayor Anan Charoenchasri said at an Aug. 18 council meeting that the purchase of 7.1 million baht in cameras for Naklua 22-24 and 14.6 million around Bali Hai Pier will be canceled due to concerns raised by the Office of the Auditor General.

Since new Pattaya administrators were appointed in 2015, the central government has clamped down on city spending, calling many of the projects initiated by the former mayor and council wasteful and ruling that Pattaya can now only spend cash on projects it alone has authority over.

Councilman Saksit Yaemsri said the OAG could consider the CCTV purchases a misappropriation of public funds as safety falls under the jurisdiction of the Royal Thai Police.

Ooooh dear.....now the "tea money" collections are going to increase dramatically

Yep can see how investing submarines by Thailand for a fantasy war is more important than the safety of citizens on a daily basis.

gI thought I readthat around 80% of the EXISTING CCTV were either inoperative or not turned on so probably would have been a wase of moneyanyway. Someone is gonna miss out on their envelope of course.

Which they can then use to catch people littering!!!!

yes, surely they should fix them, or attempt to fix them, first. whats the use in buying more when most of the ones they already have bought dont work? theres either a lot of stupidity going on or a scam, hard to tell which

Now this money can go to fatten the pockets of the trash collection officials and contractors so they can more easily not clean up the mess.

What a farce.  The previous CCTV from several years ago was a con job.  I bet there is more coverage from all the dash cams on taxis, private cars, etc!  Somebody should create some sort of web based wi fi network and piece these together.  Charge a few baht a day to anybody that would participate with their cams, give them a little scrolling advertising banner or something. People would love to watch all the various cams and locations

They can probably buy ones that are already inoperable much cheaper!
