One dead, another hurt in gold mine collapse

A small-scale gold miner died and another was injured when their mine collapsed on them in Kratie province’s Sambo district yesterday. Police identified the miners as Houn Veasna, 33, from Kampong Thom province’s Sandan district, and Nhet Phat, 23, from Kampot province’s Teuk Chhu district.

Deputy district police chief Major Noy Sithach said the incident occurred just after midnight yesterday in Kbal Damrai commune as the miners were digging for gold. Maj Sithach said police was sent to rescue them after an alert from local people.

“Mr Phat was seriously injured and transported to a hospital in Phnom Penh, while Mr Veasna died in hospital,” he said. He added that the victims had dug about 50 metres into the ground before the collapse. Major Sithach said provincial prosecutor Keo Socheat closed the mine temporarily.
