Supreme Court rejects Sorrayuth’s bail request

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court has rejected the request for bail of former wellknown anchorman Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda on the ground that his case could not be appealed to the high court if the appeal concerns factual aspect.

 

The bail requests of two other co-defendants, Mrs Pitchapa Iamsa-ard, a former staffer of  MCOT Plc, and Ms Montha Thiradet, a staff member of Rai Som Company which was owned by Sorrayuth were also rejected on the same ground.

 

The three defendants put up four million baht each as bail after the Appeals Court on Tuesday upheld the lower court’s sentence against them.

Normally the courts here seem to be overly generous with bail requests. Nice to see them refuse this one, although the reason given in the report does not make for clarity.

Totally agree here, some of the bail requests are absurd in both the nature of the request itself (to appeal a conviction despite confessing to the crime to reduce the sentence) and the circumstances of it being granted (after death sentences have been passed for example).

In this case, I believe that because the facts of the case are indisputable (the lady forged the documents with correction fluid, and the evidence of a payment to her for doing so was shown electronically) then there is basically nothing to appeal, they are bang to rights and basically must present new evidence to quash a rightful conviction. This guy is fully deserving, I remember when he got sentenced to 13 years, paid his bail and then was back to presenting his show the next morning. Unbelievable arrogance that shows his moral code to a tee.

Either that or they had enough with high profile people doing the runners

and bolting justice for one week.....

If they were murderers or rapists they would probably have been given bail, such is the Thai justice system. Everything's always out of proportion.

I doubt it. Those are two crimes the courts take very seriously. Bail is usually granted in civil cases, fraud and corruption prosecutions.

Couldn't right now find the case where several policemen were released on bail after being sentenced to death for murder, 2014 or so.

Point taken.  Few murderers and rapists have influence or deep pockets, hence no bail. Not only did they not get bail, but the worst offenders under military governments were publicly executed by decree. Huge crowds cheered on the firing squads. Public executions at the site of their crimes tapered off in the 60's and 70's and the last was in the South in '78 or '79. The rich, influential elite can and do buck the system, but they are in the minority. Their actions shame the country.
