1,500 Migrants Swim from Morocco to Spain's Ceuta in Days

Hundreds of migrants have been swimming from Morocco to the Spanish territory of Ceuta at the country’s northern tip, overwhelming border and reception arrangements, local authorities said on Wednesday.

Ceuta officials said the scale of the sea crossings is unusual for this time of year. They said good weather typically leads to more crossings by sea during the summer months, but the current situation has accelerated far beyond normal levels.

More Than 1,500 Arrivals By Sea

The head of Ceuta’s government, Juan Jesús Vivas, told reporters that more than 1,500 migrants, including adults and minors, had reached Ceuta by sea in the previous few days. He said reception facilities were “collapsed and saturated”.

Vivas also said that in earlier attempts to cross, migrants had died. He cited the discovery of 60 bodies at sea over the last year.

Spain’s interior ministry, which oversees borders and irregular migration reporting, did not confirm the number of crossings or how many people had arrived via swimming. The ministry directed journalists to its bimonthly migration report, with the next one due on 3 August.

Rescue Operations And Overcrowding

Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Spain’s interior minister, said authorities were dealing with “an extraordinary, exceptional situation” and that Spain had deployed the resources already in place permanently.

Spain’s Civil Guard and maritime rescue services have been using boats to pick up people in the water before transferring them to Ceuta. The Red Cross has also been involved in the rescue effort.

Authorities said hundreds of migrants are sleeping outside a reception centre that is beyond capacity.

Activists in Morocco and Ceuta said most people trying to cross are Moroccans, with a smaller number of Algerians, who had been living in Morocco while attempting to reach Europe.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the surge in sea arrivals.

Legal Ruling And Possible Link To Previous Crisis

Vivas pointed to a ruling from Spain’s Supreme Court earlier this month, which established that migrants arriving by sea cannot be immediately returned across the border without due process. He said that differs from procedures for those who enter Spain by land, such as by climbing over the border fence.

However, some activists questioned whether the court decision explains the current pattern. Omar Naji, president of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights in Eastern Morocco, said many Moroccans were likely unaware of such legal developments.

Naji added that the timing of the crossings, occurring after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune last week, reminded him of the border crisis in May 2021. At the time, more than 8,000 migrants reached Ceuta in just two days, following allegations that Morocco had reduced border controls and allowed crossings into the enclave after Spain permitted Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali to receive medical treatment in a Spanish hospital.

The pro-independence Polisario Front, a decades-long participant in the Western Sahara dispute, has said it is the legitimate representative of the indigenous Sahrawi people.

Morocco Cooperating, Interior Minister Says

On Wednesday, Grande-Marlaska said Spain had praised Moroccan cooperation. In an interview with Spanish television channel laSexta, he said the relationship with Morocco was “close and based on loyalty” and that Moroccan authorities were limiting irregular departures.

Don't worry folks, the brave and tough Spaniards will be out protesting these migrants just like they did against the tourists in Barcelona and other areas of Spain. I expect them to take to the streets with water guns soon. Remember they were against any people moving to Spain and impacting their cost of living??? But, the current leader said no worry baby, I will legalize 500K + migrants and take in some more just to prove a point to the USA.

1500?

Did they mean per minute?

They've doubled the population of the town in one day. If I had a daughter there I'd be driving her far away.

Disgusting.

Try again.

Those young, military age young men are not Migrants...and the number was a lot more than 1500.

Ok.

Yes closer to 50,000.

Lets see how many today. Spain's lefty extremist PM is refusing to send in the military to stop the invasion (obviously). Why disrupt his master's plan?

The wake up calls were sent before.

Left is using these "refugees" for votes so we know how this goes. Trump stopped this in US and its easy to see how mad democrats went.

Background to Ceuta

Ceuta is a small Spanish territory located on the northern coast of Africa and shares a land border with Morocco. Although it is in Africa and shares a border with Morocco, it is part of Spain and the European Union (EU). Since Ceuta is part of Spain and the European Union, reaching the city means entering EU territory.

Along with Melilla, another Spanish territory on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, Ceuta forms Europe's only land borders with Africa.

Why is Ceuta a flashpoint in Europe's migration crisis?

Ceuta has become one of the flashpoints in Europe's migration crisis because thousands of migrants try to reach the territory every year. Many travel from Africa and other countries to Spain for better job opportunities and living conditions or to flee violence and poverty in their home countries.

In May 2021, more than 10,000 migrants entered Ceuta in just two days after Morocco eased border controls during a dispute with Spain over Western Sahara, NY Times reported.

Ceuta has been under Spanish rule since 1580. Around 85,000 people live there, including Christians and Muslims, as well as people of Spanish and Moroccan origin. Many Moroccans also cross the border daily for work. However, Morocco does not recognise Ceuta and Melilla as Spanish territory and considers both enclaves to be occupied Moroccan land.

How do migrants reach Ceuta?

Many migrants start their journey from the Moroccan town of Fnideq, about 5 kilometres from Ceuta. Others try to cross from the nearby village of Belyounech, where the distance to Ceuta is shorter. Some also attempt to run and climb the border fence or use bolt cutters to cut through it.

Great post. Reading the reports you'd think the migrants are actually in mainland Spain!

Spain says migrants are returning from Ceuta after 57 die in border rush

Spain's Interior Ministry said around 50,000 people had crossed the border since Thursday morning, and estimated that 48,300 had returned by 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Friday. Juan Jesus Vivas, head of Ceuta's local government, said as many as 60,000 people had pushed across over the past couple of days.

Spot on from BILL MAHER:

“Did you see what happened in Spain yesterday? 60,000 people in one day bum-rushed the border!” “Poor Spain, at the same time, they’re having horrible fires. Spain is the new California.” [Audience laughs] MAHER: “No, it is! The northern part is on fire, the southern part gets overrun by migrants, and everybody speaks Spanish. It’s the new California.”
