Do you hide behind a cloak of anomymity? It seems that many on this forum do so?

Why? Do you have something to hide? Upset too many people? I'd like to know your reasons.

My father taught me to stand by my words and not to hide away, even if that means receiving abuse, ridicule etc.

Look for my face and bio on the internet - It's in many public places (no, not the blue 'gonk'!). Nothing to hide.

So for those forum members who never reveal themselves, what's the reason?

I'm pretty easy to find.

Why would anyone else care to look at the faces of a bunch of socially dysfunctional old men from a group of expat outcasts on a forum board? Not me, bruv. Forums are about online discourse anyway, not about swapping face pics.

I’m not sure that was the point of the original post. Maybe the poster was just wondering how people feel when they see themselves online. Maybe on a YouTube video, for example, or maybe they’ve been mentioned on major newscast. For some people, it may be a daily occurrence, while for others, it may come as a surprise of sorts If you ask me, it can feel sort of funny if you see yourself in some online video that was taken years ago. I never thought I’d see that, but there I was.

Yes, I wasn't referring to this forum specifically - I meant the internet in general terms. Many people seem to have an aversion for their image to be in the public domain, and I was wondering why. Paranoia? Something to hide? I can look back 25 or more years and find photos and press releases about my work - no-one has yet tried to blackmail me because of it lol!

I came across a twenty-year-old video and a few photos of me and the crew at one of our India plant start-ups and got to show my boy.

I'm in photos of at least 50 jobsites that are online and or in the news.

Can I find your face on the internet?

I guess if you look hard enough.

You only give negative reasons for why some people choose privacy. It seems you already have a bias against them. Can't you think of any legitimate or positive reasons? People have their circle of friends, family, and people they choose to share things with. They don’t necessarily want to share themselves with a world of people they don’t know.

If anything, the real phenomenon is this new world of social media where everyone puts their face and their entire personal life out there. Younger people grew up with it, so it might seem natural to some of them. My generation didn’t.

And once you hang yourself out there, you invite people to judge you. Someone might decide you’re looking for attention when you’re not, or form opinions about you based on an impromptu photo of you appearing somewhere, possibly completely out of context.

Last thing I need is more fame than I already have after some tosser uses AI to whack my handsome mug into some filth and sticks it on Pornhub, making it look like I’m doing the nasty with some minger from Croydon whose unkempt minge has never seen the sharp side of a razor. IMO Facebook is a haven for narcissists. Why anyone would be interested in what I ate at a restaurant last night is beyond my comprehension.

I do understand you don't value the importance of FB to the community.

Let me give you one example.

A few months ago FB was offline for several hours in the evening.

You cannot believe how annoying it was to go ring at all those houses to show what I was gonna have for dinner that evening

I have not had a drink for 3-4 years. Even before, 1-2 beers or one glass of wine was my limit. IIRC I was plastered about three times when I was much younger, and I did not like the feeling.

Do you have a bank account that requires face recognition to use their phone app? Most of us do, and if they haven't required it from you now, they soon will if you want to continue using their app.

Most financial institutions are learning older customers are abandoning them because they cannot hold a camera steady enough, for various reasons. The stats say two-thirds of applicants abandon registration attempts when the app fails on the third consecutive selfie.

I refuse to deal with any institution that does not have an alternative, such as an OTP.
