British Honeymoon Couple Dies in Greece Helicopter Crash

A young British couple who were on their honeymoon, along with their pilot, died in a private helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, Greek police said.

The victims were identified as newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert. Police said the third person killed in the crash was a Greek national who was piloting the aircraft.

Crash Near Landing pad

Greek police said the helicopter went down just metres from a landing pad on Sifnos. Reporting from local officials and the police indicated that the crash occurred in very close proximity to where the helicopter was expected to land.

A Times report said the crash happened shortly before the helicopter’s scheduled landing time of 18:15 local time (16:15 GMT).

Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foundoulakis arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and told local media that the aircraft was left in almost “nothing left” condition. He said residents saw the helicopter crash within metres of their homes and had described a “bizarre engine noise” as the aircraft was about to land.

Foundoulakis added that two of the victims were found in the wreckage, while the third was found a short distance away.

Investigators Heading To The Site

Greece’s aviation safety authority said it was investigating the crash and that its investigators were travelling to the scene on Tuesday to gather evidence and speak to witnesses.

The BBC said it had contacted Greek authorities and the aviation company for comment.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time. We are providing consular support and in contact with the Greek authorities.”

Tributes From Employers

Cromie worked at Blackstone, an asset management firm, where colleagues paid tribute in a statement. The company said it was “shocked” by the deaths of three people, including Cromie and his wife, adding that the couple had been celebrating their honeymoon.

It said Cromie was “beloved by everyone who knew and worked with him” at Blackstone, and that its thoughts and prayers were with his relatives.

Ebert worked as a senior specialist at consultancy brand Bain & Company. The company also issued a statement saying it was shocked by reports of a tragic accident in Greece involving one of its employees and her husband, and that its thoughts and support were with the families.

Fire After The Crash

Firefighters were called to the crash site and tackled a blaze that broke out following the impact. The flames had been extinguished by Monday evening, local reporting said.
