A 48-year-old American man wanted by a Texas court over an alleged domestic violence offence involving strangulation has been arrested by immigration officers in Phuket.
The man, identified by Phuket Immigration only as Brad, was detained outside a residence in Talat Nuea, Phuket Town, where officers believed he had been staying.
Arrest followed US Embassy information
Phuket Immigration said officers acted after receiving information from the US Embassy and tracing the American to Phuket Town.
A Texas court issued a warrant for Brad on May 26, 2022, in connection with the alleged strangulation offence, according to Phuket Immigration. No further details of the Texas case were released.
US officials have revoked his passport, immigration officers said. When questioned, Brad did not have his original passport and was able to provide only a copy, according to the immigration.
Permission to stay revoked
Immigration Division 6 subsequently revoked his permission to remain in Thailand under the Immigration Act. He was then taken to the Phuket Immigration investigation unit, where officers informed him of his legal rights.
Phuket Immigration said further legal proceedings would follow, but gave no details about the next steps or a timetable for action, for his extradition.
