Explosion Near German Train Station Injures Several

An explosion near a German train station, followed by the discovery of a suspicious object, prompted police to temporarily close the transport hub in the southern city of Augsburg on Wednesday morning.

Police later said the object had been identified as harmless and the station reopened, with trains resuming service after the all-clear was given.

Explosion Overnight Near The Station

Officials said an unidentified object exploded in a passageway near the station at about 3:15 a.m., causing minor injuries to two people.

The injured were a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens, the German news agency dpa reported.

Police said emergency services responded in the early hours and that road traffic and public transport around the station were disrupted during that period.

Second Suspicious Object Found

Later in the morning, police reported that a suspicious object had been found at the main station. A second object, described as suspicious but not exploding, was identified at the station by police spokesperson Timo Küfner.

Because of the discovery, the train station was shut down again at 8:30 a.m.

Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were sent to the scene to examine what had been found.

Station Reopened After All-Clear

In a statement later that morning, police said the object discovered in front of the main station was harmless and the station would reopen. “We can give the all-clear — the object we found in front of the main train station was harmless, and we have reopened the station,” Küfner told The Associated Press.

He added that trains were running again.

Police said it was still too early to determine the motive for the overnight explosion, but that investigators were working to establish what happened.

Traffic in the area later returned to normal, police said.

Augsburg has a population of about 308,000 people and is in Bavaria, roughly 78 kilometres (48 miles) northwest of Munich.
