Colonoscopy.....

Featured Replies

I've recently had a colonoscopy at a leading hospital in Chonburi.

I initially received a package price and agreed to this understanding that there would be additional charge for biopsy if they removed polyps, and for any home medicines.

However, the final bill was 36K+ as against a package of 19K.

Additional charges included laxative drugs (800), and the OR equipment used to cut the polyps (6600).

Before I take it up with the appropriate department, anyone out there give me guidance?

My wife & I both had our colonoscopy / endoscopy at Chula. B8k each. We did not need sedatives, only Lidocaine to numb the throat. A colonoscopy itself is not really uncomfortable. No polyps. Pri

The price quote I posted is from Bangkok Hospital in Chiang Rai. I have more life experience than you can possibly imagine. Another stupid comment from you, who knows next to nothing about me.

Circa 35K was what I paid for a colono/endo scopy package at Bumrungrud maybe 6 years ago.

Were you sedated? Due to a chronic shortage of anaesthetists in Thailand, that item can be more than the surgery cost.

I paid 28k (?) for endo/colon, @ Chula, and 5k of that was to jump the Q off hours, so 11.5 each if all things equal. That was 5 yrs ago.

No charge for the polyp (2) removals or biopsy of. Yes I was completely sedated.

Shortage of, that's funny.

Wife had colonoscopy done at govt hosp Udon Thani, about 15yrs ago. 5k, and at the time, think BKK Hosp wanted 10k w/ extra charges: polyp removal & biopsy, etc.

What were the other additional changes?

36-19=17 but the additional changes you mentioned are less than 8

From Claude: "Yes — there's documented evidence of an anesthesia workforce shortage in Thailand, particularly outside major urban centers.

A multicenter study across 18 hospitals in Thailand (published in the WHO South-East Asia Journal of Public Health) found the overall number of anesthesia service units exceeded the designated operating theater capacity, while the ratio of anesthesiologists was only 0.8 to 1.3 and nurse anesthetists 2.4 to 6.5 per 100,000 people on average, with an uneven distribution of anesthesia personnel relative to workload."

Cystoscopy with local anesthesia 18.000 baht. Cystoscopy with general anesthesia 55,000 baht.

You just can't resist making vapid, stupid comments, can you?

Private hospitals are a rip.

So the shortage is of anaesthesia personnel not the drugs themselves. Wonder why more med students don't specialise in anaesthesiology, the patients don't talk back!

I stick with my life experiences vs Claude.

I'll keep living & experiencing life, you keep reading some other version of it.

I had one done in USA, prior to coming to TH, and passed on getting knocked out. Doc was a bit further than half way and couldn't make the turns. A bit uncomfortable also.

So out went the lights. Woke up in the farting ward 😂 So at Chula, told them to knock my butt out.

Amazing how real life is different than Claude's imaginary world. You can always pay more, but why would you want to.

Well, I never met Claude, what bar does he hang at ?

In the futue, you may want to ask my friend Gemini. Hangs out at Club Chrome. Or you could just ask folks about their experiences. Either works ...

This.

Please post the itemized bill(with name and HN redacted) or list the charges.

Also if possible please include a screenshot of the package price and what it stated was & was not included.

The laxative prep solution is typically not part of colonoscopy packages (but also nto all that costly). Nor are any of the costs associated with polyp removal and biopsy.

There are three AI's I use. Gemini, Claude, and Grok.

Out of the three, Gemini invariably presents the most optimistic overview on a topic. Claude and Grok are more grounded.

I guess your experience is not as extensive as you thought.

Obviously you didn't inform yourself sufficient.

You can try to negotiate. I'm not sure it will help.

Is this a follow up to a worrying "poo test".......if not.....just get the "poo test" done first before splashing out.

An alternative to this is a CT scan, which can pick up any troublesome issues, or clarify if there is no issues. Downside is that if you have polyps then further work will be required.

Last year at the provincial capital's public hospital - 25k of which 5k was two nights stay and all the boiled rice I could tolerate. My wife took the (uncomfortable) couch while I got woken up ad scheduled. The first night was optional but the second was mandatory. In the US you arrived cleaned out along with a driver as they did not want drugged up patients on the road.

The price included polyp removal, one sent to pathology that came back benign.

Let me guess, you had insurance, and it didn't pay for out patient services.

Not the issue - I carry a 40K deductible and it would not be covered under either in or out patient, but should something happen ....

Then you definitely overpaid. I personally wouldn't pay more than 15k, and no hospital stay is required. It's a simple procedure.

KhunLA is partly right, My wife and I had recommended colonoscopies last year (as a precaution, our family dr. said. The procedure was done at a rather well-known private hospital in CM; with full anesthetic (my wife is allergic to the ingredients of most locals and I prefer not to be awake). Total price for the two of us with full documentation including internal video (no overnight was required, but a multi-hour wake-up stay in recovery) was 46,000. The price was agreed-to before the procedure and did not change.

I had colonoscopy AND gastroscopy at St. Luis Hospital in Bangkok November 2025. Charged extra for 1 polyp removal and lab check. 33,600 total. After taking Niflac that morning in the hospital a few hours before procedure. They gave me a sedative which knocked me out. Came round as they were removing the camera. Recovery in less than an hour and allowed to go home. No complaints.

Had a colonoscopy/endoscopy at Bumrungrad a couple of months ago. Looking for the cause of slight anemia. Did both unsedated. Nothing found. While still in the procedure room (because I was unsedated) we decided because nothing was found to do a camera endoscopy to check if the problem was in the small intestine. Nothing there either.

Don't recall what it cost. Just put it on a card. My point was better to not get sedated so you can interact with the Dr. during and after the procedure.

Since I'm American I like the general anesthesia during colonoscopy...

Where else can you legally do pharmaceutical grade fentanyl?

They even gave me the Michael Jackson as a supplement (prophophol).

Next time I want to request a little ketamine in the mix kinda like an anesthesia seasoning.

Just pretend you're homeless on a sidewalk.

All your troubles melt away.

Until you see the bill. 😎

Sigmoid Colonscopy in Surin General 2 weeks ago 3500 bt , no anaesthetic req'd but included video and biopsy Ct scan of entire abdomen 10,000

I had been a Head Nurse of an Endoscopy Unit, I also had a colonoscopy in Thailand.

What I can add is that Nurses have been trained for several years to administer what is called “ conscious sedation “. It is not the same as an anaesthesia.

It is a lengthy procedure because of the length and positions of the colon. Polyps might be hard to spot and could get missed. So it’s not a question of not needing sedation because you’re brave. It’s giving the surgeon the advantage of screening your bowels effectively. Modern technology today helps with better screens and scopes. Today it is also done by Robots.

The prices are cheaper in Government hospitals ( who also used Nurse Anesthesiologists), and 30-35-40K is reasonable if polyps are removed; lab tests done and medication to take home.

  • 2 weeks later...

My recent experience with Assoc. Prof. Parit Mekaroonkamol (one of Sheryl's recommendations) at Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok was positive. He appears to be an excellent doctor with a great patient manner. First check up he said I had two small non-bleeding internal hemorrhoids, and a colonoscopy was advisable as I hadn't had one for decades per my discussion with him. He prescribed some drugs for the meantime prior to the colonoscopy.

When I had the colonoscopy the preparation was by far the most "uncomfortable" part. Especially as it seemed to take a while for my colon to become as clean as the nurses wanted prior to the procedure, and I needed three enemas as well. The first one was particularly uncomfortable. When it came to being on the "operating" bed and finally going through the procedure all went well. Anesthetist talked nicely to me and said she would take care of me and then the lights went out and I woke up knowing nothing of the procedure afterwards. The Dr., talked with my wife while I was asleep (requested permission to do so before I went under) and said he didn't find anything of any concern, but still needed to come back for official results a week later. He only works at BKK Hospital on Sundays. I went back and all was okay. Said I should see him again just to make sure all still okay in a year. Recommended another colonoscopy in another 3 years or so. He could tell I was not enthusiastic about the idea! Total costs, 990 Baht first check up, 29,750 Baht colonoscopy (quoted a price range before hand and price fell within range), and 1,000 Baht last consultation. All the staff were professional and courteous, and I generally prefer the attitude of most BKK Hospital staff over my experience at Samitivej Hospital where they haven't been so helpful. Doctors have been great there too though.
