Ferrari Debuts First All-Electric Supercar

Luxury sports car maker Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce, marking a major shift for the Italian brand as it enters the high-end EV market.

The new model, priced at $640,000 (£474,320), is Ferrari’s first five-seater and departs sharply from the company’s traditional styling. The car was developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design agency founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

Ferrari presented the Luce in Rome, with chief executive Benedetto Vigna saying the vehicle had taken five years to develop. The name Luce means “light” in Italian.

New Direction for Ferrari

The Luce represents a significant change in strategy for Ferrari, which had previously resisted producing fully electric vehicles and instead focused on hybrid models powered by petrol and electricity.

According to Ferrari, the car uses a company-made electric motor on each wheel, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60mph (96km/h) in roughly 2.5 seconds.

The company also said all major components are produced in-house, a move designed to ensure long-term servicing and protect the vehicle’s resale value.

Ferrari said it will continue manufacturing petrol and hybrid models alongside its new electric offering.

Mixed Reaction Online

The launch prompted divided reactions on social media, with some users criticising the design and Ferrari’s move into electric vehicles.

One post on X described the car as “straight to the junkyard trash”, while another claimed Ferrari had damaged its brand in the same way critics argued Jaguar had with its recent electric concept designs.

Others praised the Luce, with one commenter calling it an “absolute masterclass in design” and describing it as a “game changer”.

Ferrari’s chief design officer Flavio Manzoni acknowledged the new model could divide opinion. Speaking in an interview with YouTuber Cleo Abram, he said criticism was a natural part of innovation and predicted attitudes towards the design would improve over time.

EV Market Challenges

Ferrari’s move comes as several major luxury carmakers scale back electric vehicle ambitions amid slowing demand and increased competition.

Lamborghini has abandoned plans for a fully electric model and shifted its focus towards hybrids, citing weak demand for high-end EVs.

Meanwhile, Porsche has reduced its EV targets as it faces weaker sales in China and tariffs in the United States.

The wider automotive industry has also been affected by growing competition from Chinese manufacturers, which have expanded rapidly by producing cheaper electric vehicles at scale.

In the United States, carmakers including Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen have increased focus on petrol-powered vehicles as demand for EVs weakened and incentives for buyers were reduced under President Donald Trump.

Despite broader industry pressures, Ferrari remains Europe’s most valuable carmaker, supported by its strategy of producing highly exclusive vehicles.

However, the company’s shares have fallen more than 25% over the past year, reflecting a wider slowdown across the global luxury sector as inflation has weakened demand for expensive consumer goods.

But I think in general, China has already won the EV race.

I wonder if this Ferrari even sounds like a Ferrari ?

I suggested in another EV thread that some enterprising Thai would soon come out with a mod kit comprising of a high power amp and speakers to make EV's 'roar' like a Ferrari or Lamborghini (used to)

So true. We love our EV and the money we save on gas pays our total monthly electric bill. Still thinking about our trip to Shanghai, with motorcycles all electric and a good percentage of the cars. It really was like visiting a city 10 years in the future--so quiet and nice walking around the center city. The cars with green license plates were the future, the ones with blue plates the past; even those ICE vehicles that were new seemed dated and out of step.

You don’t miss your timeslot at a charger unless you’re booking it from too far away and are unavoidably delayed, and if the chargers are busy, you go onto the next one.

He's racing Somchai (modified pickup truck with lots of Spoon stickers) off the lights.

Gains around 5 seconds - but loses 10% of his range.

Somchai regains the 5 seconds lost at the lights plus another 58 minutes when they stop to refuel (which Somchai only has to do half as often).

But our mate Schumie really needed a coffee and an hour in the service station toilets anyway so it doesn't count. Besides he turns up really refreshed at the destination, albeit 2 hours behind Somchai who is now relaxing in the pool with a Pina Colada 😄

The Porsche Taycan EV comes with speakers inside and outside the car with a simulated engine sound, but it's not an ICE engine, it's more like a spaceship noise and it's actually quite nice. They used different sounds on focus groups and picked the 2 most popular for normal mode and slightly more aggressive one for sports mode.

Probably not a lot more than a second or 2, it's very handy for overtaking on bad roads when there's a stream of traffic trying to get past a bus or truck. You're usually off the power completely as my front wheels pass the rear of the car being overtaken.

In terms of spending time charging, I calculated I save about 5 hours per year not filling up with petrol and wake up every day to a (free) full tank of electrons.

Pina Colada is way too fattening, a Martini, G&T or glass of good wine is more my thing.

If god forbid I was ever forced to own an EV I would endeavour to remove as much as the spyware as possible and add the mod kit to make it 'roar' again with tons of deceleration

popping to really annoy the neighbours 😋 joking of course my pseudo exhaust would be used selectively unlike as seems to be the recent fashion with those horrid auto scooter boats PCX's 🤮 running around all night with modified exhausts causing a right racket.

Free, as in, you don't count the hundreds of thousands baht you spent on the solar installation?

Oh and if you save 5 hours by not filling up, or charging at gas stations, that means you only drive around the block. You could have bought a bicycle for that instead.

Ferrari Luce launch is the textbook example of why products by designer founders flop so often. Jony Ive had four years and, assuming, unlimited budget. These got applied for writing brand books, pondering about “humanity’s connection to tools”, obsessing over color-shifting switches, and applying Apple design philosophy instead of protecting what actually makes a Ferrari a Ferrari. Result? A soft, overthought EV that feels like it belongs in an Apple Store, not in the hands of someone who craves the roar, aggression, and soul of the brand. This is the classic trap: long runway + big ego = endless philosophy and nitpicking aesthetics while completely missing the core job for the actual customer. Making the first electric Ferrari was never going to be easy. But instead of ruthlessly solving how to keep that Ferrari DNA alive in an EV, they spent the time romanticizing interfaces and “connection”. The outcome is predictable. “We risk destroying a legend,” said former Ferrari boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who chaired the company from 1991 to 2014. The luxury carmaker’s stock shed 5% yesterday.

Spouse and I have owned a PHEV for over a year and a half now and we have never charged it at a public charger. Not once. Haven't had to. Probably 75% or more of our driving is around Pattaya and we just charge it at our home charger when we get home after a day of driving around. When we drive to our Bangkok condo we charge it at the condo project's charger.

Once in a blue moon we top up the gas tank. The only time we might use a public charger would be on a long trip somewhere, but lately we have been travelling internationally as we've seen a lot of Thailand already.

As I said in an earlier post, the money we save on gas pays our total monthly electric bill. When we were SUV shopping, at that time it was between buying another CR-V or a BYD Sealion 6. The Honda was 1.7MB, looked little different than the 2018 CR-V we were then driving, and left us unimpressed with the technology and the features it came with. For 1MB we went with the BYD. Saved 700,000 baht and got a more advanced vehicle packed with all sorts of things we like, including the big screen for GPS and the multiple cameras. Since then, lots of other PHEV and EV models have also arrived in Thailand so there is a wonderful choice now. Our next SUV might be the Zeeker 7x--looks like another winner from China and this time around spouse wants massage seats.

I assume you mean IN the market?

No, I commute daily in Bangkok and spend my weekends on my farm so a Ferrari is not really a sensible choice. Certainly not an electric one.

The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is tempting though.
