Ferrari Debuts First All-Electric Supercar

Luxury sports car maker Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce, marking a major shift for the Italian brand as it enters the high-end EV market.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The new model, priced at $640,000 (£474,320), is Ferrari’s first five-seater and departs sharply from the company’s traditional styling. The car was developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design agency founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

Ferrari presented the Luce in Rome, with chief executive Benedetto Vigna saying the vehicle had taken five years to develop. The name Luce means “light” in Italian.

New Direction for Ferrari

The Luce represents a significant change in strategy for Ferrari, which had previously resisted producing fully electric vehicles and instead focused on hybrid models powered by petrol and electricity.

According to Ferrari, the car uses a company-made electric motor on each wheel, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60mph (96km/h) in roughly 2.5 seconds.

The company also said all major components are produced in-house, a move designed to ensure long-term servicing and protect the vehicle’s resale value.

Ferrari said it will continue manufacturing petrol and hybrid models alongside its new electric offering.

Mixed Reaction Online

The launch prompted divided reactions on social media, with some users criticising the design and Ferrari’s move into electric vehicles.

One post on X described the car as “straight to the junkyard trash”, while another claimed Ferrari had damaged its brand in the same way critics argued Jaguar had with its recent electric concept designs.

Others praised the Luce, with one commenter calling it an “absolute masterclass in design” and describing it as a “game changer”.

Ferrari’s chief design officer Flavio Manzoni acknowledged the new model could divide opinion. Speaking in an interview with YouTuber Cleo Abram, he said criticism was a natural part of innovation and predicted attitudes towards the design would improve over time.

EV Market Challenges

Ferrari’s move comes as several major luxury carmakers scale back electric vehicle ambitions amid slowing demand and increased competition.

Lamborghini has abandoned plans for a fully electric model and shifted its focus towards hybrids, citing weak demand for high-end EVs.

Meanwhile, Porsche has reduced its EV targets as it faces weaker sales in China and tariffs in the United States.

The wider automotive industry has also been affected by growing competition from Chinese manufacturers, which have expanded rapidly by producing cheaper electric vehicles at scale.

In the United States, carmakers including Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen have increased focus on petrol-powered vehicles as demand for EVs weakened and incentives for buyers were reduced under President Donald Trump.

Despite broader industry pressures, Ferrari remains Europe’s most valuable carmaker, supported by its strategy of producing highly exclusive vehicles.

However, the company’s shares have fallen more than 25% over the past year, reflecting a wider slowdown across the global luxury sector as inflation has weakened demand for expensive consumer goods.

The move to EV's is inevitable. Customers prefer them. It's hard to go back to an ICE car after driving an EV.

Awful. Looks like a Deepal.

It will drive worse than it looks and sound like my Tamiya RC car from the 80s.

EVs are soulless and this one is ugly af. Sonny Crocket wouldn't be seen dead in it.

Come on Ferrari. Forget this silly ev trend and give us a v10. Whatever next? An electric Panigale to replace my v2? 😄

Sacrilege...

You clearly haven't owned one.

My first EV was a Porsche Taycan 5 years ago, anything but soulless or ugly. In this household we have 4 EV's (1 is a PHEV).

Porsche’s (PAH3.DE) Taycan and Lucid’s (LCID) Air sedans have been struggling recently.

Rival Lamborghini canceled its upcoming EV due to a lack of demand, while Bentley has delayed its first EV on several instances but is still on track to debut it later this year.

None of them, they are all Chinese plastic toy cars, AKA electric sewing machines

Never owned one but drove my mates e-pace and later his q8 etron.

Very fast but totally soulless. Nostalgic sound? Kind of, like my Tamiya Hornet from when i was 12. The interior was like being in a sterile lab with a tablet. An empty apple showroom. Awful.

He was moaning he has to take his old Diesel 3 series to Cornwall because it can't make the round trip of 350 miles and it takes so long to recharge that his kids go mental waiting.

At least they looked good though. Unlike this Ferrari monstrosity.

I have only come close to buying a Ferrari once, it was a 400i, 2nd hand around 1980. I did at one time buy what the UK motoring press called the thinking man's Ferrari, a Honda NSX, because it was faster, handled better and could be driven every day.

The fact is, consumers like Battery EV's, in April this year they outsold every other category here.

image.png.e60d0870b0c63c1c8a5c897eb4e17247.png

I don't think you can say EV's are soulless, they are different, Noiseless, Vibration Free, just entirely more rewarding to drive, typically they handle a lot better because of the lower center of gravity, and it goes without saying they are fast, very fast. You arrive much more relaxed and fresh.

I'm not sure what the charging situation is in the UK, but on Friday we leave Chiang Rai and are driving to Khao Lak and Krabi. I've not even looked at how to charge, I know there are charging stations every 20 or 30km on the highways and almost every hotel has charging facilities too, it's a nonevent and doesn't require any planning.

And of course, same as that other EV fanboy on this forum, every 3 hours you suddenly have to go to the loo, are hungry and need a 1 hour rest, because that is how long it takes to charge to drive another 3 hours.
Sure when you still had an ICEV, you had the same needs

Sure, I had a 512BB in 1981 (2 years old) , and in the eighties there was no Honda NSX. The first one rolled of the belt in 1990.

Now look how much a 1979 year 512BB is worth today, and how much a 1990 NSX

Anyone who drives faster than an ICE is capable of in Thailand is an accident waiting to happen.

As for arriving relaxed I'm not surprised when you've had an hours break to recharge the battery every couple of hours. Although personally, arriving 2 hours later than I could have done in an ICE because of all the charging would test my patience to breaking point.

Songkran just gone, work colleague took his sewing machine up country instead of his dinosaur juice powered BMW because of the cost increase in fuel (Thanks Trumpy!).

Trip up was fine he claims, stopped twice to plug it into a power point.

Coming back was another matter...... 1st power point he had to wait 3hrs to plug in, 2nd was 5hrs !

I'm calling BS on that. There are chargers every 20km or so and you can see the status and book them before you get there.

Oh now I know what the JB stands for. Jenson Button. Or perhaps Jack Brabham. 😀

Look Schumie, my Camry does about 200 kph. If you are driving faster than that on Thai roads I wish you luck and can only hope when you kill someone it is not a Doctor or someone from a prominent/connected family - or showing off in your whistling Chinese electric tuna can will be the last thing on your mind.

Over Songkran it can take an hour just to get into the station. By which time you probably missed your time slot.

Fortunately my Camry does 1000 kms between refills so I can get from Bangkok to my farm and back without the need to stop.

You’re conflating speed with performance. I use all of my cars 530hp performance, but I rarely exceed 120kmhr except when overtaking.

My PHEV says it will do 1627km when full, but I still prefer to take my BEV.

You don’t miss your timeslot at a charger unless you’re booking it from too far away and are unavoidably delayed, and if the chargers are busy, you go onto the next one.

Any animal on that but Ferrari's prancing horse..

Ugliest thing and has specs from 5 year old Tesla.

Chinese make better looking cars.

Flavio Briatore shared his point of view on the new all-electric Ferrari, named "Luce": "Everyone keeps asking me about the new Ferrari. I've seen the Ferrari Luce, and it has one big advantage: the Chinese won't copy this one."

Rapid acceleration then. Probably more dangerous than top end speed.

Racing ecu flashed pickups off the lights? May i ask how old you are?

You miss it at songkran when there's a 200 metre queue just to get into the station.

I believe the poster who said it was 5 hours just to get a free bay. The stations are chaos. Why put yourself through that?

I swear ev ownership is like a religion amongst the cult members.

Just spent 4hrs charging my EV, that gives the misses 2 days of shopping.

I always said they're ok as shopping trollies or city commuters under a specific set of circumstances. I.e.

Have your own house (not a condo) to charge it

No longer journeys especially during holidays

Don't care about the soulless driving experience

Can risk the manufacturer going bust like Neta.

Don't mind waiting eons for spare parts.

Can risk unknown long term reliability.

I did consider a Tesla model 3 (the only ev i would buy) but the drawbacks outweigh the benefits for me as I live in a condo in bangkok and it's a 600kms round trip to my farm. Too much hassle especially during Thai holiday weekends.

The company also said all major components are produced in-house, a move designed to ensure long-term servicing and protect the vehicle’s resale value.

Ask Leno about that one... More likely, it's to make sure they can keep overcharging their customers on repairs.

Tesla, BYD and Xiaomi all have models that accelerate faster, for 1/5- 1/3 of the price. And the BYD's (Yangwang) and Xiaomi's (SU7) are much better looking, though I'd choose the Tesla for reliability. And it's not butt ugly like the new Ferrari.

Though, most AN images are blocked here in China, so I Bing searched the Luce and I can't figure out which of the half a dozen prototypes they actually went with. Some of them look okay, but the most prevalent image looks like a reject from a woke Jaguar commercial. None of them look like $600K USD.

Maybe it should be called "Queerrari" or "Faggotarrari" and put unicorn or trans flag as a new logo?
