Former Biden administration aide Michael LaRosa said he does not believe former Vice President Kamala Harris is well positioned to win the White House in 2028 if she decides to seek the Democratic presidential nomination.
Speaking on Fox News's America Reports on Tuesday, LaRosa, who previously served as press secretary to former first lady Jill Biden, argued that Harris would struggle to persuade voters to give her another opportunity after two unsuccessful presidential campaigns.
His comments came in response to a New York Magazine article that described Harris as the leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
Questions Over Harris's Prospects
Democratic strategist Minyon Moore told the magazine that Harris has been listening closely to voters and seeking to understand the issues affecting them.
"She's been listening to the American people and really trying to figure out what's impacting them and how she can be of service to them," Moore said.
LaRosa rejected that assessment, saying Harris's extensive political experience means she should already be taking a more decisive leadership role rather than positioning herself as a listener.
He argued that voters are looking for a fresh candidate and criticised Harris's political style, describing her as overly cautious and reluctant to take risks.
"She follows. She doesn't take risks. She calculates. She doesn't answer questions, she equivocates," LaRosa said, adding that he did not believe voters would "give Kamala Harris a third at-bat."
Alternative Democratic Candidates
Asked which Democrats he would prefer to see as the party's nominee, LaRosa named several prominent figures he believes have the qualities needed to serve as president.
"I want somebody who can run the country. I want somebody who is competent," he said, citing Rahm Emanuel, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg among his preferred choices.
Newsom has not announced whether he will enter the 2028 race. Earlier this year, he told CBS News's Face the Nation that any decision would be made in consultation with his family.
LaRosa, now a communications strategist, said his support was not limited to those three figures but reiterated that he wants the Democratic Party to nominate a candidate who leads rather than follows political trends.
Harris's office did not immediately respond to a request from The Hill seeking comment on LaRosa's remarks.
