Gary Glitter, the former pop singer whose real name is Paul Gadd, appeared at court charged with four historical sex offences dating back to the late 1970s.
Appearance At Westminster Magistrates’ Court
Gadd, 82, was brought before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday via video link from prison, where he denied the allegations. He was remanded in custody and ordered to return on 2 September at the Old Bailey in London, either by video link or in person.
Wearing a blue shirt and sunglasses, Glitter appeared from His Majesty’s Prison Channings Wood for an 11-minute hearing.
Under his legal name, Gadd was told of the charges and spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.
Charges Alleged Between 1978 And 1981
The prosecutor, Jonathan Polnay KC, said the case centres on one alleged victim. The charges comprise one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13, and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14.
The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 1978 and 1981 at a residential address in Kensington.
Polnay told the court that Gadd said in a police interview that he did not know the complainant and that the allegations were false.
He said the alleged offences involved a single person and took place when the complainant was aged between eight and 11.
Allegations Of Contact And Invitation
The prosecutor stated that the complainant lived near where Gadd did, and that it was through that proximity that he came to know her.
According to the allegations, she says he gave her chocolate and invited her into his house, where the offences were committed.
Polnay also told the court that the allegations were first reported to the Metropolitan Police on 9 January 2025 and that an investigation into the circumstances began.
He said Gadd was first interviewed on 22 July last year in relation to the investigation.
Singer’s Background And Prison Location
Glitter, who is currently held at HMP Channings Wood in Devon, was one of the best-known pop stars of the 1970s and had multiple chart-topping hits.
In July, the Met said the alleged victim was being supported by specialist officers and that she had been made aware that Glitter had been charged.
