It is near impossible to find Medical Grade (sterile) Manuka Honey in Thailand. The well known brands from New Zealand are difficult to find although there are knock-off that are probably not authenticate on Lazada and I will not use food grade Manuka Honey in an open wound.

I have a dog who has an open wound (essentially a bed sore) from when she was sick with Immune Mediated Polyarthritist. My vet put her an a therapeutic dosage of Prednisolone, but a side effect of that drug is the suppression of the immune system and they very, very slow healing of that ulcer. I've done a lot of reading about Manuka Honey and it would be the "go to medicine" IF I could find it here in Thailand.

I've only found one place on LINE selling it and they just told me that they are out of stock (although they had stock when I ordered).

My other option is Laser treatments, but I can't find any vet in my area that does Laser treatments for slow healing wounds and the places in Chiang Mai are priced at crazy prices and the drive is a show-stopper for me. Manuka would be my choice - if I could find it.

That honey is a good idea but if you can't find any, you can use Vaseline. I've used it countless times, for myself, wife, children and animals who had open wounds, to keep dirt out of it. With a person a bandage can be used also, but on an animal, unless it's a paw, it isn't easy to wrap. The Vaseline keeps the wound moist, so skin doesn't shrink too much, which would let it heal even slower.

One of the dogs here that call my house a home had a large infection in her jaw. I was going to lance it but she came back the next day with it drained, obviously her doing it some way. I loaded the Vaseline on it, as it was still open, and it healed very fast.

Have you tried people penicillin powder? I know in the tropics they put the antibiotic powder on ulcers.

Or have you tried people antibiotics?

A friend had a dog that got really badly bitten in a dog fight while he was away. I thought it would Shirley die so gave it a half tab of big white (think it was sulfer) human antibiotic.

Made an amazing improvement, so I upped the dose to 1 big antibiotic tablet daily and the dog got better.

When the wound is open (you see flesh) start with Betadine ointment, after you cleaned the wound. That keeps bacteria, funghi and virus away. No alcohol / burning.

It has iodine in Betadine, try not to wear white clothes when you work with it :)

We used in Europe once also Manuka food grade on our cat. You can try to sterilize it (we didn't do that). 100° Celsius for a few minutes should do. You can do that in the oven just like you make jam / marmelade.

P.S. when the wound has healed and it gets a crust, you can take Bepanthen ointment. Keeps the crust softer and reduces the usual itching. Its a greasy ointment, but good for skin recovery once the wound is closed.

I've seen Manuka honey in the Pattaya Central Festival supermarket over the years. Don't know what grade it was, but the pricing was something stupid like 4k baht for a small jar. It was in a locked cabinet.

Get on to Shoppee or Lazada and search for the Arataki brand of Manuka Honey. Arataki is the biggest producer of honey in New Zealand. If you want medical grade, choose the Arataki UMF 15+ or Arataki UMF 18+. Arataki UMF 10+ is also good but for medicinal purposes, you generally you should buy the highest UMF rating you can afford. High UMF rated Manuka honey is expensive, but then it is also very expensive in New Zealand too.

The Arataki brand is imported into Thailand directly from the producer in New Zealand and has Thai FDA certification label added to the package which you can check online. If you have any doubts about such products being genuine, go to the website of the New Zealand producer and email them. They'll be able to tell you if they actually export directly to Thailand and whether the item is the real deal.

I just asked the pharmacy at Bumrungrad, they don't have it and they don't know what this is

(I tried the same 10 years ago with the same result)

anyway, you would need a doctor's appointment at the hospital to buy something in the pharmacy

that would drive up the price considerably

the amount of Manuka honey sold in the world is several times the amount produced in New Zealand
