Iran Resumes Public Executions After Protests

Public executions have returned to the streets of Iran as authorities step up pressure on dissent following months of war with the United States and nationwide protests in January, human rights groups and relatives of those executed said.

The cases highlighted renewed concerns about the use of the death penalty in proceedings linked to protests and allegations of coercion during detention. The United Nations human rights chief said the executions form part of a widening post-war crackdown.

Executions in Isfahan

Human rights groups said cranes were used to set up hanging ropes in Isfahan, a central city, where three young protesters were executed.

Amirhossein Safari, 27, Abolfazl Sepahi, 23, and Alirez Sepahi, 25, were taken by van to Alikhani Street, according to the groups. They were hanged for alleged crimes connected to protests against the regime in January.

News of the planned execution circulated early on Tuesday, July 28, prompting security measures at Alikhani Square in Isfahan. Scaffolding was installed in the early hours, and a crane was brought to the site as forces gathered, raising fears the executions could be carried out in public.

Eyewitnesses told ABC News that the defendants were transported to the square in a van, escorted by a truck carrying a machine gun on its back to deter protesters. Videos shared online showed people chanting slogans, clashes breaking out and others fleeing as security forces moved in.

The men arrived at dawn, shortly before the morning prayer call, a time when Iranian law requires execution sentences to be carried out.

While Safari and Abolfazl Sepahi were hanged on Thursday, Alireza Sepahi did not reach the gallows and was taken to hospital after collapsing, which human rights groups described as heatstroke or a heart attack.

Scale of executions and legal warnings

The Islamic Republic has executed at least 56 people on national security-related charges since March 19, including 27 connected to the January protests, Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement on Wednesday. Türk warned that more than 100 others face the possibility of execution on similar charges, urging scrutiny of the cases.

In the Alikhani case described by Iranian judiciary and human rights sources, 12 young men were sentenced to death and several others received prison terms of five to 10 years. Of the 12 sentenced to death, four had been hanged and eight were awaiting execution at the time of reporting.

Lawyers in Iran told ABC News that the true number of people at risk on protest-related national security charges could be higher than UN estimates.

Allegations of torture and pressure on families

Relatives and friends of defendants in the Alikhani case told ABC News that the regime forced them to confess. They said the men were subjected to severe physical and psychological torture for days and were not allowed to choose a lawyer.

The families, who asked not to be named for their safety and to prevent further pressure on their sons, said the court in some instances rejected evidence meant to show the defendants were not at the alleged crime scene during the time in question.

They also said the pro bono lawyer assigned by the judiciary was not given access to the case during the trial and was refused access even after the death sentence was issued. The relatives added that the lawyer and the defendants’ parents were told about the sentence only after the court had delivered it.

Türk condemned the death sentences in the case last week and expressed concern about the judicial process and reports that statements described as confessions were “allegedly obtained under torture and other ill-treatment”. He said the death penalty is “incompatible with the right to life” and “irreconcilable with human dignity”, adding it “has no place in our world”.

Amnesty International also condemned the hangings in a statement on Tuesday following the executions of Safari and Abolfazl Sepahi. It warned that three of the prisoners on death row had been arrested as children.

Amnesty said the lack of a strong international response risked encouraging Iranian authorities to continue executions, and called on UN member states to take urgent coordinated diplomatic action to halt further killings.

Relatives and contacts of imprisoned protesters told ABC News that security and intelligence forces have warned detainees not to speak to the media and threatened consequences, including harm to other family members, if they do.

They are executing agents of foreign powers who are being paid to undermine the government.

Saleh Mohammadi (2026): The 19-year-old national team wrestler was publicly executed by hanging in Qom on March 19, 2026. He and two other men were convicted of killing two police officers during anti-regime protests in January 2026.

Who was Saleh Mohammadi an agent for ?

ASEANNOW has had numerous commentators wish the death penalty on people over the years. There are 1,993 prisoners on death row in the US now. Does it make people jealous to know Iranians actually execute their people?

The difference is Americans on death row are there for heinous crimes such as mass murder etc.

“No Kings” type protesters are not on death row.

“No Kings”. types are executed in Iran.

American “No Kings “ types actually think we have a king while protesting (peacefully). They’re clueless.

Yet Americans were fined under Hussein for not having his approved healthcare.

Yet Americans were fired from their jobs, threatened with arrest on a beach for not having a shot or not wearing a mask.

Where were the “No Kings” at that time? Of course this was all before they became Ukraine, LBTGXYZ and Palestine flag waivers.

Doesn't matter. Execution is is death. NOBODY deserves that, not even Itamar.

In the wartime you are not choosing between people will be dead or they will be alive. You are choosing between several traitors will be dead or thousands of hundreds will be dead as the inevitable result of their activities. This is war - people will die anyway. And, of course, as in any other country, the justice system, due to its imperfections, always punishes the innocent. Sad but true. However, there is no alternative to justice.

Both the CIA and Mossad maintain extensive, long-term intelligence and covert operations inside Iran. These operations rely heavily on recruited local assets, dissident networks, crypto payments and advanced technology rather than active-duty Western field operatives. The US and Israel openly brag about this.

Saleh Mohammadi made contact with these operations. They are basically ubiquitous in any dissident group in any of the US's adversary countries. He might have been anti regime in a good faith sense. But the minute you become actively anti regime in any of these countries (Iran, N Korea, China, Russia), you will inevitably come in contact with CIA intelligence and funding whether you know it or not.

The names of dissidents that we pick up in our mainstream media are virtually guaranteed to be in with the agencies. That is why we get to know their names. If you want to play the hard evidence card then go ahead. There is none. How could there be ?

There are 90 odd millions citizens in Iran and only a few leaders and one that is a ghost, if those 90 millions can't get the guts to stand up for what it's right, well, maybe they're comfortable with those executions, who are we that will interfere, right?

and where all those humans rights organizations that are very loud and judgmental with other countries, but moms' the word with what is happening in Iran? what? selective justice?

Just keep that same opinion if and when Israel begins executing Iranian backed Palestinians .

Although the difference will be that the Palestinians would have been found guilty of crimes in a Court of law .

You were "free" to get the jab or not, your choice. I got myself jabbed four times. I have a very close friend who have us his lucrative career because they required him to vax. And another who got anaphylactic shock and almost didn't make it.

Wonder what the Covid vax policy was in Iran. 7,627,863 confirmed cases, 146,837 deaths.

On 8 January, Ali Khamenei banned the import of all kinds of "American and British vaccines" and said he doesn't "trust them".[106][107] Immediately, the import of 150,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines was cancelled and the start of the public vaccination was delayed.[108] At that time Pfizer was the only vaccine in the world approved by WHO.[107] The Russian federation delayed its partnership for building vaccines and delivered just 2 million doses Sputnik V instead of 62 million.[109] There were some Iranians traveled to Armenia for vaccines.[110] The government had vaccinated just 6% of the 85 million population by August of 2021, experiencing the fifth wave of the pandemic with above 30,000 cases and 430 deaths[111] a day.[112] In September (nearly one month after government change), Iran health minister initially announced that they want to import Pfizer vaccines for pregnant women.[113][114]

However, they changed their mind again and said that Pfizer vaccines import are still banned.[115][when?] The Minister of healthcare promised to bring in more foreign vaccines.[116] Khamenei said vaccines should be provided by any means (either local or import) and he blamed foreigners for the shortage of vaccines in the country.[117][118] The Iranian government arrested 6 lawyers and 2 rights activists attempting to sue supreme leader for COVID pandemic administration.[119]

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Hands Off Cain are three that came immediately to mind. Iran Human Rights and Centre for Iran Human Rights. None of these groups can operate freely inside Iran but rely on information from Iranians living there.

I have to point out that we all work within our own spheres. Iranians, Israelis, Americans aso all know their own human rights in each country. Nobody reporting on human rights in Iran? You must've picked yup the comic section!

I have some hope in change for Canada and regularly harass politicians. I am hoping to get arrested for blocking a pipeline there.

Which brings us to Israel. All of us should be speaking out about Israel's violence. So I do.

Now that you mention the Jewish angle, I'd really like to know how Iran's 20k Jews are doing through this crisis with Israel bombing one of Iran's few synagogues. That figure is about the same for Zoroastrians. Xians, Jews and Zoros are constitutionally protected in Iran. It appears they are not harassed by Muslims, though I'd like to know more about that, esp in re Xians.

Obviously Iranian Jews always have the option of Right to Return but do not exercise it. In Egypt, all but 20 Jews defected to Israel. My considered opinion is that Iranian Jews are steeped in Iranian culture and have no wish to go. There is a Jew in Iran's parliament and freedom to worship.

55555, now you've gone over the edge, Nick. Sure war against Hamas, Hezbollah but those are a tiny fraction of Palestinians. Yet Palestinians are killed for no more reason that being alive and some 20k rot in Israelis jails without charge.

Tell me where this court of law is. Only one soldier colonist has been arrested for killing a Palestinian in the West Bank. We all know there are many more who are never brought to just-us.

Funny thing, I've gone through 76 years of never having to defend myself or even knowing that I had 'enemies'.

Israel was created 80 years ago, more than a hundred if you count Jewish militias. Is that not enough time for a country to gain independence? Israel's politicians desperately want Israelis to believe, if they didn't war full-time, the Muslims invaders will take over and kill every last Jew. Hogwash! The reason is, there's money in war.

Sink or swim time. If Israel actually deserves to exist (I'm not completely convinced of that after it's behavious over a century) when the US cuts off handouts, it will lay down its arms, revert to fair borders (1948), form a secular state including Palestinians or a separate state--by giving full voice to Palestinians. Israel will stop its wars and start to pay for reparations and rebuilding of the places they destroyed. Israeli colonists will exit the West Bank and Gaza. Israel will lay down its arms and negotiate, by compromise, conciliation, diplomacy. Not the present mafia policy.

Time for Israel to live in harmony with its neighbours. I must point out that it is quite possible for those neighbours to seek revenge after Israel has spilled their blood since 1909. But maybe they might be more civilised than Israel has proved itself.

If Israel wants to survive, it must do so in fairness to others. Or there may be a new homeland where the neighbours don't want trouble. Argentina, maybe. That where all the Nazis went.

Many concentration camps had hundreds to just a few guards with guns, but they stood there and let themselves be killed one after another. Many are afraid to take the first step , knowing they'll be killed before the guards are overrun. Afraid to speak has many not wanting to die from it, and there's also brainwashing.

Brainwashing happens in early childhood.....https://www.rferl.org/a/Commentary_How_Schoolchildren_Are_Brainwashed_In_Iran/2054304.html........

Mechanisms of Childhood Conditioning

  • School Curriculums: Textbooks heavily emphasize martyrdom, rigid religious dogma, and anti-Western sentiments from a very young age.

  • Gender Segregation: Strict separation of boys and girls begins in primary school, reshaping early social development.

  • Compulsory Hijab: Girls face mandatory veiling laws starting at age nine, enforcing state compliance during formative years.

  • Collective Rituals: Morning assemblies often require mandatory chanting of political and ideological slogans.

Psychological Effects in Adulthood

  • Cognitive Dissonance: Adults often experience severe internal conflict between forced public compliance and private personal beliefs.

  • Hypervigilance: Decades of living under surveillance and fear of the morality police create chronic stress and anxiety.

  • Identity Fragmentation: Suppressing true thoughts, creative expressions, or sexual orientations leads to a fractured sense of self.

  • Intergenerational Trauma: The anxiety and survival strategies learned by parents are frequently passed down to their children.

Modern Resilience and Resistance

  • Private Counter-Education: Many Iranian parents actively counter state school propaganda by teaching alternative, secular values at home.

  • Digital Communities: Online platforms allow adults to find solidarity, process shared trauma, and access forbidden information.

  • Public Defiance: Recent youth-led movements, like "Woman, Life, Freedom," demonstrate a widespread, conscious rejection of early childhood conditioning.

If you are interested, we can explore this topic further. Would you like to focus on:

  • The specific psychological coping mechanisms used by Iranian adults to heal?

  • How underground art and literature serve as tools for deprogramming?

  • The ways diaspora communities support mental health resources for those inside Iran?....................

  • The Iranian regime uses the repressive tactic of coercion by proxy, in which a person’s family in Iran is harassed, threatened, detained, or killed to apply pressure to dissidents.
