Italy's Meloni Calls for Spain Suspension From Schengen

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urged Spain to be suspended from the EU’s passport-free Schengen travel zone after thousands of migrants entered the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco.

Speaking hours after Italy’s foreign minister made a similar request, Meloni said the Italian government was coordinating with relevant authorities and could move towards “exceptional measures”, including suspending Spain from Schengen.

Meloni cited footage and accounts from Ceuta, where migrants, including children, swam to reach the enclave. The prime minister said the images were “shocking” and added that Italy would not “stand idly by”.

According to Spain’s delegation in Ceuta, at least nine people died during the sea crossing. Meloni said the scale of the attempt raised serious concerns for Italy.

Tajani Pushes suspension Over Irregular Migration

Before Meloni’s comments, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had also called for Spain to be excluded from Schengen. He argued that irregular and uncontrolled migration created risks to national security.

Tajani criticised Madrid’s decision to grant Spanish citizenship to more than 500,000 irregular immigrants, saying the move encouraged human trafficking. He said images from Ceuta showed why, in his view, the Spanish government’s approach was wrong and fuelled exploitation of people attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

The foreign minister’s remarks followed Spain’s handling of the situation at Ceuta, where people arrived after crossing from neighbouring Morocco.

Spain Rejects The Criticism

Spain rejected the allegations and dismissed the call for punitive measures. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Luis Albares accused Tajani of using migration issues for political purposes, and said his comments were improper for a partner and “friendly country” that should offer European solidarity rather than “partisan demagoguery”.

The Spanish government’s response came as Italy stepped up pressure inside EU discussions over migration and border policy.

Schengen Rules And Italy’s Broader Position

The Schengen Area is Europe’s passport-free travel system. It allows people to travel across the internal borders of 29 participating countries without routine border checks.

While Meloni and Tajani focused on suspending Spain specifically, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini went further, calling for the suspension of the entire Schengen system.

The dispute reflects wider disagreement within the EU on how to manage irregular migration, shared border responsibilities and the conditions for operating passport-free travel between member states.

Isn't Italy as bad as Spain for attracting boat loads of migrants?

Looks like it encouraged wholsesale invasion from Moroccan youths. Again, the left wing government of Spain showed it is curse for Spain, and now all of Europe.

The EUSSR would never agree to that. Their PLAN is to destroy Europe.

Italy is no better as Meloni recently agreed to a quota of 500'000 illegals and non european immigrants to be allowed in Italy. So what is she giving out here to Spain ? And what about Germany ? All the syrians, afghans, ukrainians, iraquis and so on they are letting in..are they any better ? Much hypocrisy as all these countries use the cheap migrant labour to run their downfalling economy. And of course the ruling european union parliament in Bruxelles turns a blind eye to all the abusive entries of illegals and immigrants. Western Europe is doomed anyhow.

I wouldn't know where to start unpicking this ridiculous and totally uninformed tosh.

Stop embarrassing yourself. Find something nice to post about. Get a hobby. Don't give up the day job.

The numbers - and facts(!) about immigration Italy, Spain and EU are all on the table and easy to find out.

The EU bashing is well known and since decades pushed by pro Kremlin and far right circles without responding to facts.

Except complaining they all produce hot air - same as the current US admin.

Indeed. All the Cueta 'migrants' were back in Morocco within a few hours. They never stood a chance of getting to mainland Europe. The whole 'assault' was apparently driven by anti-social media lies.

It is sad how the right manages to divide such an eminently positive project as the EU by playing on peoples' fears and justifying the bigots who have no clue about what is happening. Fortunately they haven't got a hope in hell of getting into real power. I'm actually looking forward to the AfD forming an attempt at government in Saxony. The hallmark of the brownshirt is incompetence when it comes to governing. It'll be quite a panto.

I do hope Sanchez rips the creeps a whole new one apiece at the EU conference.

You do not understand the long term damage that these ridiculous left wing policies are doing to the EU and the UK.

All you can do is throw out lame insults like "NAZI". It would be amusing if it weren't so sad. 😄

Typical lefty Thai expat, moves to a right wing, nationalist, patriotic, homogenous country to enjoy all the benefits while supporting the destruction of their homeland with inane left wing policies.

Quote: "Riots and raping has started in Ceuta."

Was just a bold lie and you can't even admit it.

Aren't you happy that the death toll was so high under immigrants instead of ZERO deaths under the residents in Ceuta?

But we all know that Nazis like you would love to live under a regime like in North Korea or Russia.

Migration is controlled by EU headquarters.

Hungary opposed the decision and had to pay massive fines.

And then they got Orban removed.

Seems like they are using a similar tactic that Israel has used to deflect criticism of its policies by calling anyone who criticizes an anti-semite.

The migrants are complaining that there is nothing to do in Ceuta, so they are going back to Morocco voluntarily.

Lol.

Like I've been saying for years, remove the incentive and they will self deport.

If they were dumb af like Britain and put them up in 4 star hotels with 3 buffets a day they'd continue to invade. Like they do in Britain.

This girl started the "Save Europe Act" and is taking the EU to court.

Background:

This "girl" belongs to "Europe of Sovereign Nations" (ESN), a right-wing populist to right-wing extremist group and European political party in the European Parliament of the 10th legislative term. It was founded in the summer of 2024 by national parties such as the German AfD.

The chairman of the ESN party is Stanislav Stoyanov of the Bulgarian party Vazrazhdane, wich most commonly refers to a far-right, pro-Russian political party.

In July 2026, the European Parliament decided by a large majority to initiate an official review procedure by the Authority for European Political Parties and European Political Foundations.

It is being investigated whether the ESN party and its members are violating fundamental European values (such as human dignity, democracy, and the rule of law) through political statements and social media posts.

Potential consequences: Should violations be established, there is a risk of losing party status and the loss of EU funding amounting to millions.

They are fighting to secure further funds from the EU, which they want to abolish.

But that's not democracy if you're not allowed to criticize.

Deep down inside, everyone is a dictator at heart. They want their way and their perception of reality to be implemented.

They don't like Trump, so they hope he has a heart attack so their guy can get in.

That's not exactly "democracy" but it's the nearest approximation I guess.

Meloni wants Spain kicked out of schengen? Pot kettle black. Italy has by far received more undocumented migrants than Spain..

https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2019/11/13/four-countries-account-for-the-majority-of-europes-unauthorized-immigrant-population/

Migration to Italy is a central and long-standing issue in European politics. Due to its location in the Mediterranean, Italy (particularly the island of Lampedusa) is one of the primary arrival points for refugees who choose the dangerous sea route.

For years, Italy, Greece, and Spain bore the brunt of registration and initial care, as under the EU’s existing Dublin rules, the country where a migrant first sets foot on EU soil is responsible for the asylum process.

On the other hand, Italy has been receiving substantial financial support for years. Furthermore, alot of migrants travel onwards from Italy to the north without hindrance, and without Italy properly registering them.
