Am I the odd one out not wanting to retire from my job and permanently move overseas to Thailand/ Pattaya ?

Or heaven above to Cebu or Da Nang ?

Im working the night shift and I'm starting mopping floors , getting in exercises but i really thought about retiring this year ..but ..as they the many youtubers say " they are living the dream ' retired laying by the pool in Pattaya or hua him or wherever

I tried....the first 7 days were good ...but then... depression set inI cannot think of anything worse than going through a retirement in Thailand or overseas from Australia

Please guys , let me know if you are retired but decided against living in South East Asia full time and I the only one to think this way ?

I just couldn't do it ...I tried ...but renting out a condo in Pattaya and day after day doing nothing ..no no no !

As others have said - there is your problem. Do you not have a hobby or past-time that you can pursue, su ch as your statistics research? Without a hobby, you'll probably end up bored and an alcoholic, or fleeced by the ugly ladyboy down your soi.

Haven't you ever thought to yourself, 'If I didn't have to go to work today, I would love to do X,Y, and Z? Something you enjoy. Once retired, you can do those things. I have some friends who have nothing to do all day, they literally sit and twiddle their thumbs and tell me, "I'm trying to kill three hours before I meet some friends for lunch." Life only lasts so long, why would they want to 'kill hours'? They should savor every one of them. Write down some ways that you 'want' to spend your time, rather than 'have' to spend your time. You're old enough to entertain yourself.

Why not rent one at Flybird that comes fully stocked with a fresh ladyboy? You’ll be so much happier. You won’t have to paint your own nails or fluff your own todger anymore. I don't think it is as much a question about Thailand for retirement but more a question of wanting to be active.

i recall a manager at Bechtell retiring at 65 in great celebration 12 months later he was dead thru lack of something to do

Good luck retiring in the West now or in 10 years as it will soon be an unaffordable, crime-ridden, socialist, dystopian nightmare... along with AI deciding everything. Invest your money wisely, have no debt, and get out whilst they are still letting you to do so.

Retirement is bloody marvellous, innit? The world is a massive place and there is loads to see and do, especially if you have got a few quid behind you. If the choice is between mopping floors and being retired, I reckon 99 percent of people would choose retirement quicker than you can say pass me the mop.

But let's be honest, if someone has spent their entire working life mopping floors for a bit of dosh, they are probably not exactly blessed with a mind that needs much entertaining. You are hardly talking about Stephen Hawking here, are you? So the idea that the bloke might struggle to stay busy once they are no longer pushing a mop around does not exactly have me falling off my chair in surprise.

Give some geezer a lifetime of doing a job that requires about as much brain power as making a cup of tea, then suddenly tell him he has got all day to entertain himself. What exactly did you expect? He is not going to take up quantum physics overnight, is he?

Once he has plucked the latest crop of hairs sprouting out of his ears in the morning, that leaves a fair few hours in the day to fill. Best not to let go of that mop, son.

Sad and the best of luck. I've been lucky in that I'm easily entertained and satisfied being alone. It's going to be hard to change at your age but it is possible. I have little advice other than trying to make some changes. Maybe read some books on overcoming depression. Only a couple :) Then see if you can implement some of the concepts that were interesting. Considering his mental stage, It dosn't get any better than this, he should enjoy it and go for it. Or he should join a monestary in Australia.

"Retirement" does not mean doing nothing. Many people leave their paid employment to do things they were unable to do when they had financial responsibilities.

But there's so little left for me to explore in my home country, plus the cultural and economic outlook is depressing, so I much prefer being retired in Thailand.

I've also set up small business to focus on the parts of my old job I enjoyed the most, and while it's barely profitable, it does create some local jobs and some new challenges.

Surely not the "odd one out" - I am sure many expatriate residents of Pattaya, probably even of Cebu or Da Nang are even now hoping fervently that you do not!

You should seek counselling and I don’t mean that in a demeaning way but as a constructive way of finding your road map in life?

Talking to a professional is not a sign of weakness but it can strengthen your mental state and help you to plan the rest of your life.

A forum like this would confuse you further, as people here have retired and moved here for all different reasons, different personalities, financial resources; life experiences ; different states of health etc etc.

Some enjoy a rural lifestyle while others prefer a city lifestyle.

It’s all related to one’s mental, financial , social, psychological and physical wellbeing.

Sounds like you need professional help to figure out what will be most appropriate for you.
