Lincoln Fiasco Shows Trump Admin's 'True Lack of Leadership'

Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego on Sunday criticised the leadership of the Trump administration after fresh reports raised concerns about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, arguing that the extended deployment left sailors dealing with ongoing problems.

Speaking to ABC News’s “This Week”, Gallego said he had discussed the situation with a service member’s spouse days earlier and described the issues as part of a wider failure to prepare for the operational tempo and length of the Middle East mission.

Extended Middle East Deployment

The USS Lincoln, a US Navy aircraft carrier deployed to the Middle East, has been at sea for nearly nine months. It has gone more than 200 days without a port call, a fact Democrats cited as part of their growing concern about morale aboard the ship.

Gallego, a former Marine, said the administration did not plan effectively for the conflict’s trajectory. He argued that officials had “did not plan for this war” and had not anticipated how it would escalate or how the US would withdraw from it.

His remarks were made as calls for action increased, with Democrats pressing for an investigation into reported conditions and their impact on the crew.

Democrats Demand Probe

The concerns surfaced amid reports of low morale among sailors during the ship’s continued time away from port. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed the reports as “completely misrepresented”, according to ABC News. President Donald Trump, when asked about the length of the deployment, said it was “not nearly long enough”.

Gallego said the public exchange between the White House and the Pentagon could discourage service members from staying in the military. He warned that when personnel return home and discuss the experience with their families, they may conclude that the leadership they faced was not worth the commitment to rejoin.

He said that the criticism of the deployment length and the reported handling of conditions amounted to “a true lack of leadership” from both the defence secretary and the president, as described by Gallego.

Mullen Says Crew Morale Has Lifted

Retired Admiral Mike Mullen, a former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told “This Week” that long carrier deployments are not unusual and may run beyond the time originally stated. However, he said deployments of the length now experienced by the Lincoln still take a toll on sailors and their families.

“These ships, these people, these families need to basically come back,” Mullen said, pointing to lessons learned during the Vietnam era when carriers were deployed for about a year at a time and crews “wear yourself out”.

Mullen also said he had spoken with the commander of US Central Command, Brad Cooper, on Saturday evening. He reported that Cooper told him that any poor conditions on the Lincoln had already been addressed and that morale had improved after the crew learned it would be returning home.

“One of the positives of Cooper's visit yesterday is he announced to the crew that they're going home … and so the morale is up significantly from where it was just a few days ago,” Mullen said.

Carrier Replacement Under Way

A US official told ABC News that the USS George Washington departed its station in the Pacific Ocean last week and is expected to replace the Lincoln once the transition is complete.

Trump is the very opposite of a true leader, he is a coward, he is a fake patriot and he cares not one iota for the average American, nor for a single member of the Armed Forces. It's like they that they despise him as much as they despise his ridiculous SEC DEF.

The destructor that he is wreaking with this war is horrific and there's no end in sight nor was there ever a game plan. Perhaps he naively believed Yahoo when he told him the war would only be a simple two-week operation.

The amount of chaos Trump has caused for the entire planet with his unnecessary forever war is astounding. It was sich a bad choice and the timing could not have been worse, as the world economy is already challenged enough. This means nothing to him as his wealth continues to grow through massive corruption.

What did they think was going to happen with the strait and why did they think they could handle the consequences of this recklessness.

Trump deserves severe punishment for this act. America will be reaping the blowback for years to come and nobody knows how long the chaos will last. He will likely receive that punishment during the midterms and if the Dems succeed by taking both the house and the Senate it's very likely that the White House janitor will not even return the goons phone calls.

Dumb and dumber. Pure Don style stupidity and staggering levels of ignorance and hubris.

The only good that can come from this is if MAGA devotees finally realize what a dunce they supported and rise up against this street trash pig president.

When did you start taking orders from George Soros. and Reid Hoffman?

Just like E Carroll. It worked for her and may work for you.

The MAGA quantum paradox: simultaneously attacking a Vietnam activist as a 'draft dodger' while defending Ol' Bone Spurs—the cult leader who called you a 'sucker and a loser'.

  1. Activist? Doesn’t mean Jack Shi-! A protesting loser draft dodger.

  2. Trump was medically disqualified.

  3. Clinton never served. What was his excuse?

  4. Obama never served. Post Nam.

  5. Biden never served.

  6. Post the sound bites of your allegations about Trump. Hint: there are none. He said, she said, they said doesn’t cut it. Same about Kelley.

  7. He did make a negative statement about McCain. I agree it was out of line (politics gets nasty) but we all say things we shouldn’t have said. He’s redeemed himself many times over.

Really? By turning former allies into enemies? By vindictively pursuing perceived enemies with a weaponised DOJ? By imposing tariffs which are a tax on the poorest Americans? By stuffing up a war which has no exit ramp? Signing into law measures that put children at increased risk, on the basis of a debunked autism claim?

Do you really believe the utter dumbf****** you post?

Why are you deflecting again?

It’s about military service and veterans.

Both you have no experience in.

Best to stick with your subject matter expertise. Informing people of your awards in journalism.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth rallied support for U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn during a visit to Iowa Monday.

I see Commander Hegseth is off to the Iowa front in the Iran war....

Unlike the Strait of Hormuz, Iowa is very very safe, has lots of free parking, absolutely no traffic whatsoever--but boring AF. 🫢

If you went into the military, I'm sorry you got conned. I'm sorry your brothers came home in flag-draped coffins.

No different since Vietnam. Politicians make the wars, young people die. In every country that wars.

It was all for nothing, as every war has proved throughout history.

Wars will cease when men refuse to fight.

Nothing to do with the topic or the following banter so those awards are meaningless.

Nope. Activists were the ones that saved Americans from killing and being killed in a useless war.
