Lincoln Fiasco Shows Trump Admin's 'True Lack of Leadership'

Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego on Sunday criticised the leadership of the Trump administration after fresh reports raised concerns about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, arguing that the extended deployment left sailors dealing with ongoing problems.

Speaking to ABC News’s “This Week”, Gallego said he had discussed the situation with a service member’s spouse days earlier and described the issues as part of a wider failure to prepare for the operational tempo and length of the Middle East mission.

Extended Middle East Deployment

The USS Lincoln, a US Navy aircraft carrier deployed to the Middle East, has been at sea for nearly nine months. It has gone more than 200 days without a port call, a fact Democrats cited as part of their growing concern about morale aboard the ship.

Gallego, a former Marine, said the administration did not plan effectively for the conflict’s trajectory. He argued that officials had “did not plan for this war” and had not anticipated how it would escalate or how the US would withdraw from it.

His remarks were made as calls for action increased, with Democrats pressing for an investigation into reported conditions and their impact on the crew.

Democrats Demand Probe

The concerns surfaced amid reports of low morale among sailors during the ship’s continued time away from port. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed the reports as “completely misrepresented”, according to ABC News. President Donald Trump, when asked about the length of the deployment, said it was “not nearly long enough”.

Gallego said the public exchange between the White House and the Pentagon could discourage service members from staying in the military. He warned that when personnel return home and discuss the experience with their families, they may conclude that the leadership they faced was not worth the commitment to rejoin.

He said that the criticism of the deployment length and the reported handling of conditions amounted to “a true lack of leadership” from both the defence secretary and the president, as described by Gallego.

Mullen Says Crew Morale Has Lifted

Retired Admiral Mike Mullen, a former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told “This Week” that long carrier deployments are not unusual and may run beyond the time originally stated. However, he said deployments of the length now experienced by the Lincoln still take a toll on sailors and their families.

“These ships, these people, these families need to basically come back,” Mullen said, pointing to lessons learned during the Vietnam era when carriers were deployed for about a year at a time and crews “wear yourself out”.

Mullen also said he had spoken with the commander of US Central Command, Brad Cooper, on Saturday evening. He reported that Cooper told him that any poor conditions on the Lincoln had already been addressed and that morale had improved after the crew learned it would be returning home.

“One of the positives of Cooper's visit yesterday is he announced to the crew that they're going home … and so the morale is up significantly from where it was just a few days ago,” Mullen said.

Carrier Replacement Under Way

A US official told ABC News that the USS George Washington departed its station in the Pacific Ocean last week and is expected to replace the Lincoln once the transition is complete.

Sadly Trump misjudged the resolve and firepower of Iran.

Nine months without a break is not acceptable.

Not according to Trump, who when asked about the length of the deployment, said it was “not nearly long enough".

Not the first time or the last. Yankee Station, Vietnam. USS New Jersey off Lebanon 1983.

Navy life can be arduous at times. They volunteered.

Both Trump and Hegseth. To paraphrase another poster - Hegseth should have immediately flown out to the carrier and addressed the crews concerns face to face and vow to put things right. That's what a leader does.

A lot of sensitive souls in the armed forces these days. Heaven's knows how they would have coped in WW1 and WW2.

They didn't need to have to cope anyway in this truly ridiculous so called war.

Trump and Hegseth both dangerous and incompetent fools.

Correct.

Those photos with the sailor wearing a hard hat is most likely taken in a shipyard, not at sea. Hard hats aren’t worn within the interior of the ship underway. Moldy heads may happen in a shipyard when the ship is undergoing extensive repairs/maintenance and the crew is not living aboard.

Underway they are cleaned and inspected daily. Been there done that.

I don't remember complaining about the food or lack thereof or my living conditions when I was placed in a jungle warfare environment in Vietnam for 13 months. The journalists must be interviewing the biggest "sissies" on board in order to get this story!

Hegseth is no leader!

He if he went, he would more than likely require security onboard!

Gallego’s remarks underline what’s been obvious for months: the USS Lincoln deployment wasn’t misfortune, it was mismanagement.

Nine months at sea, 200+ days without a port call, morale collapsing, families raising alarms at town halls in San Diego, and leadership’s response was to wave it away as “misrepresented.” That’s not operational toughness; it’s an abject failure to plan for the tempo of the Middle East mission.

When a former Marine senator says the administration “did not plan for this war” he’s pointing to the core issue: sailors were left to absorb the consequences of a strategy built on improvisation.

Dismissing their lived conditions while insisting the deployment is “not nearly long enough” sends a clear message — the human cost is secondary.

Even Admiral Mullen, normally cautious, acknowledged the toll and the historical lesson: long carrier deployments wear crews out. The fact morale only lifted once CENTCOM told them they were finally going home says everything.

This isn’t about politics; it’s about basic stewardship of people. When sailors return and tell their families what they endured, many will conclude exactly what Gallego warned: the leadership they faced wasn’t worth signing up for again.

Tell that to those who served in subs, and on destroyers and battleships, in WW2.

They were "rotated" and normally, unless action was encountered, had a good idea of when their patrol etc would last!

They all had an expected "Home Depot" date which Lincoln still does not seem to have!

Why do people volunteer for the US military (and others).

1) Poor education

2) Lack of opportunities at home. No jobs.

3) Family tradition to dare others to kill you and keep score killing people you don't know.

4) Poor life choices.

5) Misguided view that there are a) girls in every port waiting for a "Murrican boy, b) we joined the Navy to see the world and what did we see--we saw the sea.

Trump is the very opposite of a true leader, he is a coward, he is a fake patriot and he cares not one iota for the average American, nor for a single member of the Armed Forces. It's like they that they despise him as much as they despise his ridiculous SEC DEF.

The destructor that he is wreaking with this war is horrific and there's no end in sight nor was there ever a game plan. Perhaps he naively believed Yahoo when he told him the war would only be a simple two-week operation.

The amount of chaos Trump has caused for the entire planet with his unnecessary forever war is astounding. It was sich a bad choice and the timing could not have been worse, as the world economy is already challenged enough. This means nothing to him as his wealth continues to grow through massive corruption.

What did they think was going to happen with the strait and why did they think they could handle the consequences of this recklessness.

Trump deserves severe punishment for this act. America will be reaping the blowback for years to come and nobody knows how long the chaos will last. He will likely receive that punishment during the midterms and if the Dems succeed by taking both the house and the Senate it's very likely that the White House janitor will not even return the goons phone calls.

Dumb and dumber. Pure Don style stupidity and staggering levels of ignorance and hubris.

The only good that can come from this is if MAGA devotees finally realize what a dunce they supported and rise up against this street trash pig president.

US broadcast media is now reporting one major problem with resupplying the USS Lincoln is that Iran hit the 5th Fleet logistics in Bahrain and destroyed everything.

The Hegseth embarrassment blackout got in the way of any announcement regarding that destruction, as well as a lot of other destruction Iran caused.

This info will likely be in print soon, so LINKS can be provided then.

Um. I think we were pretty powerful as part of ending that war. I certainly count: I was the last man arrested for the Vietnam draft.

! was activist duty from 1963-1975. That counts.
