It's not a need but a want. But you can make a follow up shot with a semi faster than any others, which could mean the difference in a deer getting away or being dropped. A good first shot is the most important but things happen in hunting where even the best shots can miss the mark. More so with a deer that's trotting. Rifles are things people buy like cars, boats and art. Different types for different tastes. I've never had one as I prefer a bolt action or pump, but I would own one.

I have owned up to 4 firearms, for hunting. The most powerful were a 5 shot 0.222, bolt action. A pump-action 12 gauge.

It seems any whackjob in America can own handguns. In Australia, to own a handgun as a private individual means compulsory membership of a pistol club, 6 months probation, regular practice requirements, and stringent qualifying checks. Nothing above 0.45 calibre, which itself requires a special police exemption.

Face it, handguns and semi-automatics have only one purpose - killing people as quickly and efficiently as possible. The stats say your nutjobs take full advantage.

Yes, that's exactly what the founding fathers probably had in mind, and common sense. Possess the most powerful and advanced weapon you have to counter your opposing foe, who will have the same, or better weapons.

Or do you think that musket would win a fight against M4 or M60 or M2 Browning maybe. Think maybe that 5 round bolt 8mm Mauser would last long in a fight.

Even the gang bangers got AR-15 (two 30 rd mags taped together) against that bolt action, who wins that one. My day it was the Tec 9 pistol, also could handle 30 rd mags, and dumb ass gun to carry. Gang bangers aren't the smartest, or best shot, sadly.

Did founding fathers think semis would be a possibility, possibly, since the musket is quite advanced over the bow & arrow. They weren't that stupid, thinking firearms would never get more advanced.

Oh yea, your .222 (Sako Vixen (L46/L461), or Remington Model 700 and 788) is more powerful than the AR-15. Little shy on rounds though.

Do you really think the gang banger are buying they firearms from FFL dealers. Restricting law abiding folks, only makes them an easier target. From tyranny & gang bangers, or just you normal burglar or rapist.

And if I was a hunter, and accidently crossed path with a Kodiak, Polar or Grizzly bear, or any bear or mountain lion/cougar/puma (name location dependent), meow, hell yea, I want the most powerful semi auto available, with 15 rd mag, incase there is more than 1. Or even a pissed of wild boar. And if cubs or wee ones are in the area, yea, you can't run fast enough.

Myself & Fred have both stated the system needs to plug a few loopholes, and better regulation involving training & security of firearms.

I like the recent conviction and 15 yr sentence to the father that gave his unstable son a firearm 👍 Finally, and they need to dish out a lot more of those.

I suggest you check out the prison terms people get in Australia for being in possession of an unlicensed or unregistered firearm. The authorities come down a lot harder.

I am wondering when, in the pursuit of ever more power, Americans start using Barretts for deer hunting. What will you do when gangbangers get their hands on them?

This one was shot with a Lee-Enfield 0.303. still good enough for hunters in Commonwealth countries. A weapon invented over 100 years ago

i can remember doing a quad 50 in the now ended knob creek shot 40 years ago. 4 250 round belts at $250 each. thank god i have trigger control.

my favourite belt fed was a vickers or squirt guns, like mp5s or sterlings.

So you know the USA does not have a national firearms registry. How can you hope to control ownership when you don;t even know how many you have?

I understand it, I just don't care. Mass shooting 'deaths' by legal sane gun owners is rare. Unfortunately the price to pay for the freedom & liberties of the other 350M people.

Closing all the loopholes is work in progress. And the USA is a Constitutional Republic, and should explain why there aren't many 'national' things.

No national firearms registry is part of the gun ownership freedom. So the govt doesn't know who has firearms, so they can't be confiscated.

Try to understand why the 2nd Amendment exist. Things become a little clearer then.

Yes, so the other 350M can walk the street free without fear of threat by those already in prison. IMHO, you can't build enough prisons and fill them up with the scum, fast enough.

And the ability to carry a firearm, means less worry about the scum not yet in prison. Lovely system IMHO.

Prisoners had a Sixth and Fourteenth Amendment right to a jury trial at the federal and state levels, unlike Section 80 of the Australian Constitution.
