Putin Says Ukraine War ‘Coming to an End’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the war between Russia and Ukraine may be nearing its conclusion, as both sides observe a short ceasefire announced to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Putin said he believed the conflict, which has lasted more than four years, was approaching its final stage. According to Reuters, the Russian leader said he believed “the matter is coming to an end.”

He also indicated Russia was willing to discuss broader European security arrangements, suggesting that negotiations on the continent’s future security framework could follow the fighting.

Ceasefire Linked to Victory Day

The comments came shortly after the announcement of a temporary halt in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to pause fighting for three days beginning on Saturday. The pause coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, an annual commemoration marking the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

Trump said he hoped the temporary ceasefire could lead to a longer break in fighting.

“I’d like to see a big extension,” he said in an interview with NewsNation when asked whether he planned to speak with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about prolonging the truce.

The U.S. president said the brief halt in combat could save lives and create space for further diplomacy.

“We have a little period of time where they’re not going to be killing people,” Trump said. “That’s very good.”

Prisoner Exchange Planned

Trump also said both sides had agreed to conduct a prisoner exchange during the ceasefire period.

According to the president, around 1,000 prisoners held by each side are expected to be transferred back in what would be one of the largest exchanges since the war began.

“They also agreed to give a thousand prisoners back,” Trump said, adding that the transfers were expected to begin almost immediately.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Since returning to office for a second term, Trump has sought to broker an end to the conflict and has met separately with both Putin and Zelensky.

Despite those diplomatic efforts, the war has continued, and negotiations have yet to produce a lasting settlement.

Relations between Trump and Zelensky have at times been strained. A meeting between the two leaders in 2025 drew significant attention after it became marked by visible tensions.

The latest ceasefire announcement and Putin’s comments about the war nearing its end may signal a potential shift in the conflict. However, it remains unclear whether the temporary truce will lead to extended negotiations or a more durable halt to the fighting.

Uncertain Prospects for Peace

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, has resulted in widespread destruction, heavy military casualties and millions of displaced people.

Although the current ceasefire is limited to three days, officials in Washington have suggested they hope the pause could create momentum for broader peace talks.

For now, the truce offers only a short respite from the fighting while diplomatic efforts continue.

If Russia gets to keep the territory they've taken (most of the Donbas), this won't end until Russia have Odessa giving them absolute control over the Black Sea and one third of the world's carbohydrates. Russia will simply build strength and go for Odessa later, and they probably won't stop there and go for Moldova because with Odessa it's an easy win and they already have troops in Transnistria.

Losing Odessa turns Ukraine into a rump state.

First of all, calling it a war is simply wrong. Ekskursiya is the russian term for excursion 🙄

If he's going to get this right, Putin needs a transation primer on other important peace-maker terminology:

Bing Bing Boom Bing = Dzyn-bong Din-don

We won in the first hour = Vyigral v pervyy chas

Love Tap = Droozheskiy tolchok

Bombed them back to the stone age = Otbombili ikh obratno v kamenniy vek

If you’re so triggered by Putin’s lies, book a ticket to Donbas and fix it personally. We’ll wait for your battlefield updates.

That's not happening.

IMHO Ukraine will not give up Donbas and Odessa which are critical industrial regions. They are vital for the Ukraine's economy. UKraine has also not given Crimea too. If ever the war will come to the end, it will only delay another war in which Ukraine will attempt to take back these regions. The lull will allow Ukraine to increase their battle hardened military from current +800,000 to 1.5 million military force. That will match up nicely against the Russian military. I don;t think Ukraine will join Nato if they harbour the ambition to take back those regions.

Won't happen. Russia has lost momentum, and in April they even lost more territory than they gained. First time since April 2024.

And, they are now losing more soldiers than they recruit.

There is a reason why Putin is cornered by his own, and talking about ending the war.

So no, they won't be even near taking control over the above. Ukraine is the country doing most damage at the moment, with numerous strikes far into Russian oil rafineries. They are superior at drone technology, and that's tipping the war in Ukraine's favour.

I get what you’re saying.

I’m worried about how Putin will react, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a tactical nuke or the threat of one to claim the rest of the Donbas and Odessa.

He'll definitely threaten to use nukes. He has many times before. Yeah he's capable of that, but I think by the time things get so desperate that he might try, there will HOPEFULLY be different powers in charge in Russia to defy his suicidal orders.

Whenever using "small" nukes is war gamed, generally, it leads to nuclear winter level escalation.

Unfortunately I think you are correct in your assumptions, but goodness help us all if you are correct.

Putin is just trying to build himself and off ramp.

The peace loving people of russia would like to negotiate a end to the war (and a large chunk of Ukraine)

We will negotiate with everyone except the nation we are attacking

Why won't those nasty Ukrainian's stop attacking peace loving russia?

Keep the pressure up Ukraine.

The drone strikes are working, keep hitting those refineries

Yes Ukraine is in a much stronger negotiating position IF Putin ever does agree to do so. Of course Putin needs to save face or he's dead.

There might be another kind of interesting problem brewing. Because Ukraine is doing so remarkably well in the war against Russia, I imagine there are political factions within Ukraine that will want to push first to at least take Crimea.

Ukraine can never really be secure with a Russian Crimea.

Of course if a deal is on the table there will be massive pressure from the US (Putin's poodle) and also Europe to take a deal.

So if Ukrainian hawks want to push they might risk support from Europe. There is already no support from Trump.

Or possibly they could get buy in from Europe to take at least some time to make a big play for Crimea.

This is all speculation of course.
