Russia has warned the United Kingdom of “consequences” after confirming that British-made drones were used in strikes on targets in Russia, accusing London of escalating the war.
Russian Embassy Accuses UK Of Escalation
The Russian Embassy in London said Britain had “deliberately opted for an escalation” following reports that the drones were employed in attacks inside Russian territory. In a statement, it said the UK was acting as an “accomplice and co-perpetrator” of what it described as “crimes and terrorist attacks”.
The embassy added that the UK would have to respond for its actions, warning that the more it became involved in the conflict, the higher the “price” it would face.
UK Says It Stands With Ukraine
Responding to the allegations, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) told BBC News that Britain would stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Ukraine. The spokesperson said Russia should have no doubt about the UK government’s determination to oppose Russian aggression both in Ukraine and against the UK and its allies.
The spokesperson also said the UK was committed to supplying Ukraine with the equipment it needs to defend itself against Vladimir Putin’s “illegal invasion”.
Drones Used Against Military And Industrial Targets
The drones cited by Russia were built by two separate British companies. They have been used inside Russia in what the text describes as widespread targeting of military and industrial sites, including refineries and warehouses linked to Wildberries, an online retailer.
Ukraine has said it repeatedly targeted the company, known as Russia’s version of Amazon. It claims that seven out of 10 of the largest Wildberries logistics centres have been “disabled”. A military source told the BBC that UK drones were used in the attacks, which are said to have caused more than £35bn in economic damage.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said drones using UK components and configurations were used to strike Russian territory, including a fuel depot in the Kamensky District of the Rostov Region.
Wave Of Strikes Follow Previous Attacks
The warning comes amid a period of Ukrainian strikes on Russia. In the latest overnight attacks, Russian officials said about 620 drones were launched towards the area around Moscow. They reported that air defences destroyed more than 180 of the devices, while some people were wounded.
Officials said an attack the previous night killed nine people and injured 23, including a child. On Saturday night, Ukraine fired about 822 drones towards Russia, according to a regional governor, who said around 600 were aimed at Moscow and that the capital suffered “one of the most massive drone attacks in recent memory”. Seven deaths were reported across Russia.
On the same night, Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least seven people and injured more than 39.
MoD Announces Large Drone Supply To Ukraine
In April, the UK MoD said it would provide Ukraine with tens of thousands of drones, including long-range strike systems, as its biggest package to date.
