A student at a Catholic junior high school in the southern Philippines was killed after he was shot by a fellow pupil, a local official said on Tuesday. The suspected attacker later took his own life, the official added.
Attack Inside Classroom
The alleged shooter brought a .45-calibre pistol into a classroom at the school in Zamboanga City, Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso told local radio.
Olaso said the suspect fired at a teacher who was seated at a table, but missed. The attacker then moved to another classroom and shot a student, who later died.
The mayor said the suspect subsequently died by suicide.
Livestream Footage Reported
Local media reported that footage circulating online appeared to show the shooting from a first-person perspective, AFP reported.
Authorities said the incident was brought under control and there were no further active shooters.
Link To Other Recent Violence
The Zamboanga incident comes two months after a high school shooting in Tacloban City, in the central region, that killed three students and left 20 others wounded.
In that earlier case, the suspects were two teenage boys. One was found to have been regularly playing an explicitly violent online game.
The game, Gorebox, has been banned in the Philippines. The country’s Senate is investigating the effects of violent computer games on young people.

Across South East Asia, officials have been examining ways to restrict social media use for minors, citing potential harms.
Earlier this month, a Thai teenager killed eight people, and then himself, at his school. Thai authorities said he consumed violent content on social media.
