Tourist Visiting US Killed After ICE Encounter, Report Says

A Mexican tourist who was struck and killed by a semi-truck while fleeing US federal immigration officers in Florida was visiting the country on a valid tourist visa, according to reports published this week.

Tourist Dies During Immigration Operation

Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, 28, died on 14 July after an encounter with federal officials, including personnel from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), at a gas station in Florida, according to state authorities.

Officials said federal agents approached Coronilla and four other men at the service station on the morning of 14 July. The group then ran from the scene. A spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol said Coronilla entered a roadway and was hit by a passing semi-truck.

Reports Detail Visit to the United States

According to the Miami Herald, Coronilla, who was from the Mexican state of Guanajuato, had arrived in the United States about three weeks before his death. He initially travelled to Atlanta to visit relatives and friends before heading to Florida two days before the incident to spend time at the beach.

The newspaper reported that Coronilla was visiting the country on a tourist visa.

His wife travelled to the United States after his death to make arrangements. An immigrant rights organisation, Colectivo Árbol, told the Miami Herald she had been unable to contact her husband and only learned of his death after seeing news coverage. The group said Coronilla is survived by a seven-year-old son and a seven-month-old daughter.

Death Among Recent ICE-Linked Incidents

Coronilla's death was one of four incidents linked to ICE operations within less than a week. Two people, one in Texas and another in Maine, were shot and killed by ICE officers. A fourth person died while in ICE custody during a transfer to an immigration detention centre in Georgia.

The series of deaths has prompted renewed criticism from members of the public and some lawmakers, who have called for increased oversight of ICE and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as they implement President Donald Trump's expanded immigration enforcement and mass deportation agenda.

Identity Confirmed

The Department of Homeland Security has not publicly identified Coronilla. However, the Associated Press confirmed his identity through a Mexican government official.

Although the Florida Highway Patrol initially described the incident as part of an ICE operation, a Homeland Security source familiar with the case told The Guardian that US Border Patrol agents were involved in the encounter.

Agree. I wouldn't be able to tell them apart - probably not many other visitors would either.

To everyone asking 'if innocent why did he run', here is one possibility.

He ran, because his friends ran, it's a herd mentality, fight or flight human instinct - even though he did nothing wrong, he felt these aggressive guys were a threat. Also, he - like millions of others - have seen innocent people arrested, detained without charge, and even gunned down in the street when they were unarmed by ICE thugs.

If it were me, I probably wouldn't run - partly cause if I did, I know they'd chase and catch me, beat me, cuff me, and detain me or maybe shoot me in the back.

I always travel on holiday to visit family & friends, then head off to the beach. And people actually believe he was there, not doing anything illegal, or hanging out with illegals. Use a bit of common sense, and think for yourselves. Weeks away from wife, family, work, in a foreign country ... just visiting, without wife, seriously. Y'all that stupid.

I always travel without the wife, as she never wants to see family & friends, or they want to see her. Doesn't everyone leave the wife home for weeks at a time, and job gives you unlimited time away as well.

Too funny, everyone runs from PoPo, and they are all innocent cheesy

I'm sure you can.

Maybe you could start on thread on that and leave this one free for the non-afflicted?

Not a bad idea actually.

You wouldn't like the thread though, but you don't have to read it.

I'll find myself out, thanks for the reminder.

Nonsense.

I have lived as an ethnic minority for 20 years in Thailand. Double charged many times. Singled out for traffic stops. Singled out for police checks and searches as I walk to the pub, all due to my ethnicity.

Thailandlanguage courses

I'm not complaining, I love it here and I'm a realist. But don't claim I don't know what it's like.

Soon, I will be an ethnic minority in my own country. At least the Mexicans have Mexico.

A very privileged ethnic minority who are treated with kid gloves by most Thais - including law enforcement. Listening to you claiming to be a victim is hilarious.

Believe it or not you are still highly privileged back home as well whatever the 'news sources' and crapstirrers may say. Hint: there aren't enough Muslims in 'Londonistan' to keep electing Khan as mayor. Fortunately most Brits are decent and have brains.

And of course you totally avoided the main thrust of my post.

Ask the young "illegal" Brazilian shot in the head in London. He was NOT a tourist, he was working illegally. Not than meant he should have been shot. Why not give the context that the shooting was soon after the 7/7 bombings when there was great fear of terrorism in London.

So every illegal worker deserves to be shot?

It was police being over zealous in this case. Much like ICE.

My point is that it is not limited to just the US.

Not splitting hairs in any way, I'm quoting what was actually stated in the OP that appears to correct the first inaccurate paragraph that you quoted...

Is that why I pay 10x the price at national parks and am subject to random searches as I walk down sukhumvit road to the pub minding my own business? Why i get stopped at checkpoints on my Ducati?

I have lived 20 years in Thailand as an ethnic minority. I survived with a smile on my face. So your bleating about minorities in my country with dei initiatives, 2 tier policing favouring them, 2 tier sentence guidelines attempted to be pushed through to favour them, over representation in many key well paid areas?

Nah, doesnt wash.

Best clutch those pearls elsewhere.

That's an interesting and smart observation. And true.

They found WW2 UXO down the street from where I live, and the whole area had to be evacuated before they could start defusing/moving it for disposal. (We were out all night and they provided Zed-beds and really tasty goulash in a local school gym.)

When the police came round clearing the houses a married couple, neighbors of mine, refused to open the door and barricaded it. Took hours to get the two of them out. They came from Russia and had done time in the Gulag and were terrified of being hauled off under a pretence.

Don't be so damned stupid, where did I say that. He was called a tourist, I was just pointing out that he was not a tourist or an electrician it would seem. Might have been working as one but certainly didn't have the qualifications to be one. Rather worrying that there are companies out there employing illegal unqualified workers doing safety critical work.

If you see the way ICE agents are dressed they look like armed, masked bandits running amok rather than professional, uniformed, disciplined law enforcement.

That is no accident ... and it's quite clear disciplined professionalism and decency is not even on their agenda.

When I think my unit got through a 4 month stint in Belfast on the Falls Road back in 74 without killing or even injuring anyone I can only say ''Pack of vicious and useless tossers!''.

But again: that is intentional.

(And yes we made several arrests, some not easy at all. And we faced a couple of seriously dangerous incidents that Coward in Chief Trump's little icicles would run from in terror, not just a few people holding up placards and chanting in front of a gate. ICE is a pack of cowardly <deleted>houses.)

"Tougher". Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

First, what a childish boast. (Usual for MAGAs).

Secondly, how come you can't defeat Iran? Or anyone else? I think Panama was your last clear victory. Like Mike Tyson getting in the ring with a midget. So brave, so fearless, so tough. USA! USA!

MAGAs are nothing if not entertaining. What fun it must be to live in such a world of delusion.

Since the WJP rule of law index has usa at 27th and Thailand at 77th.

Thailandtravel guides

I guess they dont have the syndrome. 😄

27th? Shameful for such an advanced country.

Or maybe it's not that advanced after all. Just has some expensive toys for the rich to play with. Morally it is no longer even on a par with Russia anyway. And I gather infant mortality and other such indicators of development are not exactly stellar either.

27th? And then gob off about others?

Should sort themselves out before they dare to sit in judgement on others. Christians eh? Ever heard of the beam in your own eye? Or were you not listening to that either.

Both groups leaving make the US a better place.

Sadly, a lot of them are remigrating when they find out the grass isn't even as green on other side, much less greener.

I'd hope they come back with some sense of humility, especially the ones that have to beg for money to buy their plane ticket. But humility doesn't seem to be strong among the septum ring crowd.

Never encountered ICE?

Back in the 80's, I worked the oilfields of South Texas and not a week went by when I wasn't pulled over by La Migra, either at formal checkpoints (up to 100 miles away from the border), or just randomly tooling down the road. Never once had an issue. It was just part of doing business in the area.

They regularly found bodies in the brush of gotaways and illegals fleeing. Whether by violence, traffic death, dehydration or other causes of death. Of course, Trump wasn't the President back then, so none of those encounters made the headlines, though. They got a short blurb on page 8 of the local news.
