Trump Ends NBC Interview After Clash Over Election Claims

US President Donald Trump abruptly ended an interview with NBC's Meet the Press after a series of exchanges with presenter Kristen Welker over his claims that recent elections were "rigged."

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The interview, which aired on Sunday, featured Trump repeating allegations that both California's ongoing primary elections and the 2020 US presidential election had been manipulated. When Welker repeatedly asked him to provide evidence for his assertions about the California vote count, Trump responded: "All I have to do is look, and I listen."

Welker replied that such observations did not constitute evidence. Trump then accused the media of being dishonest before terminating the interview, saying: "Sorry, let's call it quits because I've had enough."

Dispute Over Election Claims

The discussion turned contentious after the pair addressed the 6 January 2021 US Capitol riot and Trump's continued claims about the 2020 election. Trump then shifted the focus to California's primary elections, where vote counting was still underway in several races, including the contest for governor.

Pointing to the delay in finalising results, Trump alleged that election officials were "cheating on the election." When Welker asked whether he had evidence to support the accusation, he repeated that he relied on what he had seen and heard.

California's vote-counting process often takes several days because of the state's extensive use of mail-in ballots and procedures designed to ensure ballots are verified and counted accurately. Trump has long criticised mail-in voting.

As the exchange continued, Trump called the media "crooked" and directed personal criticism at Welker. She rejected the accusation and attempted to continue the interview.

Interview Cut Short

The conversation deteriorated further when Trump told Welker she was "either crooked or you're stupid." After additional back-and-forth, he declared the interview over.

"I've sat in the rain with you for an hour, on and off in the rain, and I've given you enough time," Trump said. He also criticised the press, arguing that the country could not be successful with what he described as a dishonest media.

Trump then signalled to members of his team, stood up and left the set, ending the interview.

Weather and Foreign Policy Discussions

The interview had been conducted at a farming event in Wisconsin and was affected by technical problems and rain striking the metal roof of the venue. NBC reported that Trump walked out around 50 minutes after the interview began on Friday.

Before the dispute over elections, much of the discussion focused on tensions involving Iran. Trump defended US actions aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and said any military involvement would not become "an endless war."

He also discussed a proposed $1.8 billion "anti-weaponisation" compensation fund, which has since been abandoned. The proposal had drawn criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, who argued it could have led to payments for people prosecuted in connection with the Capitol riot.

Following the broadcast, Welker said she had spoken with Trump on Saturday and that both acknowledged the difficulties caused by the weather. She added that the president had agreed to take part in another Meet the Press interview in the future.

She's a journalist.

Her looks are irrelevant.

No she’s a political figure and White House press secretary and as such looks are very important - Michelle Obamas political career success once she stopped riding Barack’s coat tails shows that lol

From now on, anytime Trump allows questions from reporters, each question should be:

"What evidence do you have for the 2020 election being 'stolen'?"

Over and over and over again. Relentlessly.

Put up or shut up, Donny.

Lame duck presidents retain their full constitutional powers until their term ends,

  1. Clemency: The President retains Article II pardon and commutation power. Because clemency is final and generally cannot be reversed, outgoing presidents historically use this period to issue controversial or notable pardons.

  2. Executive Directives: Outgoing presidents can issue executive orders, memoranda, and agency directives to set policy or alter the enforcement priorities of the executive branch.

  3. Appointments and Nominations: They can nominate individuals, including federal judges, up until their final day in office, provided the Senate confirms them.

  4. Foreign Policy: The President retains commander-in-chief authority and the power to negotiate treaties and international agreements. However, any treaties still require Senate advice and consent.

  5. Legislation: If Congress passes bills during the lame duck session, the president can sign them into law or veto them, including utilizing the pocket veto.

Kidding aren't you. MSM interviews Democrats vs MSM interviews Trump or any republican for that matter. We all know who gets the softball questions. The MSM are a propaganda arm of the Democratic Party to the extent they'll replace the cackling idiot's word salad with something that seems reasonable and thoughtful. Someone wrote it for her obviously. Cost a pretty penny that did to the tune of $16m.

BTW the Mayoral race in LA stinks to high heaven.

Telling someone they are not telling the truth on this or that is not exactly asking hardball questions. Get real. She went easy on Trump, in my opinion. He's a serial liar and she called him on a few of his worst. He had trouble defending his blatant lies so he stormed out like the whiny crybaby he is. End of story.

Do I really need to explain to you how voting works in the US in places with mail-in voting? Republicans vote in much larger numbers on election day. This is why, when votes are started to be counted, Republican candidates often have a lead. Exactly this happened in California.

Democrats have embraced mail-in voting so a larger percentage of the mail-in votes will be Democrat votes in places with both systems, mail-in and vote in person. Mail-in votes take longer to count, especially in California, which allows voters to send in their mail-in ballots on election day. Obviously, these votes can't be counted until they are delivered a number of days later.

With me so far? When those mail-in votes finally arrive and are counted, the election totals can shift regarding Democrat/Republican votes, since as I said before, more Democrats use mail-in to vote. A Republican who was ahead on election night can fall behind as mail-in votes are counted.

There is nothing sinister going on. Older voters are used to when we often got results election night. When they don't get immediate results, they think something fishy is going on. It's not. It simply means we need to wait until the mail-in votes are counted and results can now take a week or more in some jurisdictions.

We have this voter discrepancy with mail-in voting due to your Dear Leader Trump. You'll remember that he has told his voters in no uncertain terms to NOT vote by mail--while voting by mail himself, of course--it's perfectly ok for him. Curious that--ok for him but nobody else. Anyway, this has set up exactly what I said earlier--Republicans, obeying Trump, vote in larger numbers on election day and Democrats vote more by mail-in ballots.

Trump, of course, is spreading his usual lies about the California election and mail-in voting, all part of his strategy to limit voting and intimidate/stymie voters as much as he possibly can leading up to the mid-terms.

And vote harvesting also seems to be ok. Mail in voting should be stopped except for genuine reasons (e.g. being overseas or interstate) and should be received several days before, not after, the actual election day.

Well, maybe you can back up your claim of "majority" of conspiracy theories proven true.

I'm a long time follower of these silly things as they are manufactured, as many are quite amusing. I recall Alex Jones standing outside a venue where the Bilderberg Group was meeting, claiming that on that night's menu were "babies roasted in gold leaf". There is an element of society that believes such things. Same with "chemtrails", "9-11 Truthers", the "fake" moon landing, the Flat Earth Society, attributing every protest anywhere in the world to funding by George Soros, even that Queen Elizabeth was the leader of an international drug cartel. The shape-shifting 10' Green Lizard People from the rogue planet Nibiru has always been a favorite. The Onion couldn't do better than that.

There are hundreds of these absurdities. To claim a "majority" of conspiracy theories have proven true is quite a stretch.

Vote harvesting?

Give Todd Blanche a call. He's waiting for you evidence. Maybe you'll be appointed DNI or something equivalent.

As for mail-in voting, I hope you know Trump, his kids, and his son-in-law vote that way. So long as the postmark is before the election, it is considered valid.

Note that not everyone has a chauffeur, or is even mobile. When Republicans close polling stations in largely poor or minority areas (as Texas did in 2024), mail-in becomes a lot easier. Then there was 2020, when Covid was still rampant. Safety dictated more mail-ins.

Trump loves to say that the US is the only country in the world that uses mail-in voting. Blatant lie, of course--what else, with Trump? In reality, dozens of countries use it and, like the US, it works fine. Instead of limiting voting and making voting hard, voting should be easy to do, to encourage more voter participation, not less.

In the last election, a higher percentage of US eligible voters did not vote, 34%, than voted for either Trump or Harris. That's not good. For me, how a vote is cast--by mail or in person, is meaningless. What's important is the vote itself.

From Brian Stelter's post on X... transcript of interview:

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/read-transcript-president-donald-trump-interviewed-nbc-news-meet-press-rcna348508

WELKER: Do you think anyone who attacked police officers on January 6th should get taxpayer money?
TRUMP: I wouldn’t be inclined to say so, but I have to see it. I can tell you this: 97% of those people, you look at them, the FBI or whoever it was, cause you had a lot of crooked cops, you had dirty cops. Comey was a dirty cop.
WELKER: Well, there is no evidence to –
TRUMP: A guy like Bolton was a dirty cop –
WELKER: But there is no evidence that– but there’s no evidence that people who –
TRUMP: Wait a minute, wait a minute. Oh, you think Comey was a straight cop?
WELKER: We had 170 people who pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers.
TRUMP: Comey was a dirty cop.
WELKER: No, no, but the people who assaulted police officers.
TRUMP: They had FBI – listen to me. They had FBI agents ushering them into the building. They had FBI “Go into the building.” Those people are walking around, they’re looking, “Oh, isn’t this nice?” They weren’t in– they were being ushered into the building.
WELKER:
There’s no evidence of that, sir. There’s no evidence of that.
TRUMP: You had a bunch of dirty cops, and frankly, what they did was weaponization of our government.
WELKER: But sir, there– there’s no evidence of that. More than a thousand people pleaded guilty to crimes –
TRUMP: No, well, yeah, no, there’s none. You know what they do?
WELKER: Would you –
TRUMP: Try looking at the tapes one time.
WELKER: Would you take it off the table?
TRUMP: Look at the tapes one time.
WELKER: Okay, but 172 people did plead guilty to assaulting police officers.
TRUMP: You know why they pled guilty?
WELKER: Should they be exempt –
TRUMP: Because they told they were going to jail for 15 years –
WELKER: – from receiving funds?
TRUMP: – if they didn’t.
WELKER: Should they –
TRUMP: They pled guilty because they were frightened. They went down. They were ushered into a building. Many of them were arrested without even going into the building.
WELKER: You’d be okay with them receiving taxpayer dollars?
TRUMP: The people were destroyed by dirty cops and by weaponization. Many of those people should be compensated. Now, with that being said, the, as I understand it, the weaponization fund was going to set up a group of people, people that could be picked by anybody, fair people, smart people, and they will go on an individual case basis.
WELKER: Okay.
TRUMP: Now, I don’t know what’s going to happen with the weaponization fund. I love the idea, because people like you, the fake dirty press, the crooked press, people like stupid Biden, he’s not smart enough to know what’s going on, but people that surrounded him, surrounded his beautiful Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, what they did to the lives of people, they destroyed people. They sent people to jail who did nothing wrong.
WELKER: All right, this is, just to be very clear,
there’s no evidence of what you’re saying, but let me ask about Todd Blanche.
TRUMP: There’s a lot of evidence.
WELKER: Let me ask about Todd Blanche.
TRUMP: Listen – listen to me – listen to me.
WELKER: Let’s talk about Todd Blanche.
TRUMP:
There’s tremendous evidence. There’s nothing but evidence.
WELKER:
Well, it’s not been presented in a court of a law.
TRUMP: The election was rigged. It was a dirty election.
WELKER: Mr. President –
TRUMP: And it’s happening again right now in California.
WELKER: –
you’ve never presented evidence
TRUMP: It’s happening right now in California
WELKER: – that the 2020 election was rigged.
TRUMP: Right now, it’s look at what’s happening in California.
WELKER:
Where’s the evidence to that?
TRUMP: It’s four days –
WELKER: The Republicans are doing well in California.
TRUMP: In California, it’s, no they’re not. They’re dropping fast because it’s a rigged election. Let me tell you, it’s four days and they aren’t even close to coming up with the –
WELKER: That’s how they count the votes in California.
TRUMP: Do you know why they’re doing that? Because they’re cheating on the election.
WELKER: There’s – What? Do you have evidence to support that?
TRUMP: It’s– all I have to do is look. All I have to do is look.
WELKER: But that’s not evidence.
TRUMP: And I listen. And I listen to people. And let’s see what happens.
WELKER:
But sir, that’s not evidence, and that’s how they count the votes in California–
TRUMP: Do you think it’s appropriate that they have an election and five days later, they’re nowhere close to picking a winner?
WELKER: State and local officials acknowledge they are slow. They’re urging–
TRUMP: No, they’re crooked.
WELKER: – they’re urging the votes to be counted quickly. That’s how they vote in California.
TRUMP:
They’re crooked just like you’re crooked, your press is crooked. And Meet the Press is crooked.
WELKER: To be fair, I’m not crooked. But let’s continue.
TRUMP: Really? Well, you play right into their hands then.
WELKER: Let’s continue.
TRUMP: You’re either crooked or you’re stupid.
WELKER: Let’s continue.
TRUMP: You play right into their hands with this stuff. You know that these elections are rigged. Your network knows that they’re rigged. Do you know that I won an election in a landslide and I got 94% bad press.
WELKER: But Mr. President –
TRUMP: You know why I got that?
WELKER: – you’ve never presented –
TRUMP: Because you have no credibility.
WELKER: -evidence.
But you’ve never presented evidence it was rigged. Let’s keep talking about, I want to talk about Todd Blanche.
TRUMP: You have more evidence, there’s more evidence than ever presented.
WELKER: Let’s talk about–
TRUMP: Your elections in this country –
WELKER: – you went to court.
TRUMP: We’re like a third world country.
WELKER: But sir –
TRUMP:
Your elections are crooked and you’re crooked, and Meet the Press is crooked.
WELKER: But Mr. President–
TRUMP:
And so is ABC and CBS and CNN.
WELKER: But Mr. President–
TRUMP: You’re a one-sided crooked network. Sorry. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough.
Thank you, darling. Have a good time.
WELKER: Mr. President, let’s – please, I traveled all the way to Wisconsin.
TRUMP: I’ve sat in the rain with you–
WELKER: I traveled all – I know. I traveled all the way–
TRUMP: I sat in the rain with you for an hour.
WELKER: –to Wisconsin.
TRUMP: On and off in the rain, and I’ve given you enough time. You ought to straighten out your press, because you know what?
WELKER: Mr. President–
TRUMP: A country can never be great with a dishonest press.
WELKER: – we traveled all – listen. We traveled all the way to Wisconsin for this interview.

Not sure of your understanding of American politics, you studied American politics in an American school?

The skinny from Brookings Institute:

"If Republicans lost control of either chamber in 2026, the legislative phase of Trump’s presidency would end (unless he and the Democratic opposition pivoted toward an unlikely bipartisanship), and a stream of oversight hearings would put his administration on the defensive. For a president whose approval rests in part on his ability to move swiftly and decisively, this would be a major setback".

He'll be too busy trying to defend himself on hearings over insider trading, enriching himself in office, illegally attacking Iran, illegally taking down a foreign nations governments/presidents, relationship with Epstein. If guilty enough to get some Republicans on board during an impeachment phase, he could be removed from office.
