Trump Invites Putin To Attend Miami G20 Summit

The Trump administration has issued a formal invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December, according to the US government.

“We’ve invited President Putin to the G20,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday at a press conference on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Rubio said the administration views the trip as an opportunity for Putin to engage with the US president and with other world leaders. He added that the administration hopes Putin will accept the invitation and that a chance for such discussions will arise during the summit in December.

G20 Dates And Venue In Miami

The G20 summit is scheduled to take place at Trump National Doral Miami from December 14 to 15.

The meeting will bring together leaders from the group’s member states, with the US hosting the summit at the president’s golf resort.

Rubio Meets Lavrov On Ukraine

Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, met on Wednesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The two discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and the US-Russia bilateral relationship, according to a readout from the State Department.

The meeting comes as the administration continues to engage with Russia amid ongoing fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Sanctions And Earlier Exceptions

The US imposed sanctions on Putin after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Trump administration later made exceptions that allowed senior Russian officials to travel for meetings in the United States.

In August 2025, it permitted Putin to travel to Alaska for a summit with the president.

Earlier in 2026, the administration also allowed Russia’s sanctioned Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to attend the G20 finance ministerial in Asheville, North Carolina.

Ukrainian allies within the G20 objected to Siluanov’s participation and, according to the article, succeeded in having him excluded from a family photograph taken at the event.

U.S. Ceasefire Effort Tied To Energy Infrastructure

Trump has renewed efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The administration has said it is seeking a more neutral negotiating position for the United States, while extending engagement towards Russia and, at the same time, putting pressure on Ukraine to consider concessions to end hostilities.

As part of that approach, the US is pursuing a limited ceasefire in which Russia and Ukraine would agree to stop attacks on their energy infrastructure.
