Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he is “really pleased” to welcome the US president to Manchester, after the city was selected to host the G20 summit in 2027.
The G20, an annual meeting of the world’s largest economies, will be held on 27 and 28 November 2027 at Manchester Central Convention Centre. Organisers say it will be the biggest summit ever hosted in the city.
Manchester Chosen For 2027 Summit
Manchester was picked earlier this year, before Burnham took office as prime minister. Downing Street said preparations will now intensify, with hundreds of people in the local area expected to be involved in the build-up.
Councillor Garry Bridges, the new leader of Manchester City Council, said an event of this scale would have been “unthinkable a couple of years ago”, adding that he hoped it would influence the way Donald Trump views the city.
Phone Call And Comments With Trump
In June, as it became clear Burnham was likely to become prime minister, Trump referred to him as “the mayor of a town”.
Burnham later told reporters that in their first phone call he said to the president: “Manchester isn’t ‘some town’… this is Manchester”. He added that he believed the “right thing to do” was to laugh about it and “move beyond it”.
The prime minister had previously said, while mayor of Greater Manchester, that he “wouldn’t welcome” a visit from the American president. Speaking as he travelled to New York ahead of meeting Trump for the first time on Tuesday, Burnham said politicians “say things throughout their career”, but that the priority was to focus on the moment.
Security Costs And UK-Wide Events
The UK has hosted the G20 before, in 2009 in London. At the time, the cost of the security operation was estimated at £7.2m.
As well as the summit in Manchester, there will be events across the country next year as the UK takes over the G20 presidency.
The presidency is currently held by the United States. This year’s summit is due to take place in Miami in December.
What The G20 Covers
The G20 brings together 19 of the world’s largest economies, alongside representatives from the European Union and the African Union. It covers about two-thirds of the world’s population and more than 85% of global wealth.
The forum was first established in 1999 to promote financial stability and cooperation.
