Trump’s video depicting Obamas as apes sparks outrage

Trump Faces Backlash Over Racist Video Post

US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by sharing a social media video containing a racist clip of Barack and Michelle Obama. The footage portrayed them as apes and was featured at the end of a video discussing alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election.

This action prompted Republican Senator Tim Scott, who is black, to urge Trump's removal of the post, deeming it "the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House." Initially, the White House defended the video as an internet meme and dismissed criticism as "fake outrage." However, growing pressure from Republican senators led to the clip’s removal from Trump's Truth Social account. A White House representative claimed a staffer had "erroneously" posted it.

The clip also depicted other Democrats as animals, including Joe Biden as an ape. The Obamas have yet to comment, but the video’s distribution sparked fierce criticism, both publicly and within Trump’s party.

Senator Scott expressed his hope that the post was fake, reinforcing the racism he perceived. Meanwhile, Republican Mike Lawler condemned the post as "incredibly offensive" and called for its immediate removal.

Utah Senator John Curtis further criticized it as "blatantly racist." Reports indicated concerns about account access and post approval processes after Florida representative Byron Donalds contacted the White House, learning a staffer "let the president down."

The White House Press Secretary defended the post, urging a focus on more pressing issues. Nonetheless, Derrick Johnson from the NAACP called it "disgusting," suggesting a distraction from other controversies like the Epstein case.

Criticism extended beyond politicians. Ben Rhodes, a former Obama adviser, remarked on Trump's tarnished reputation compared to the Obamas’ legacy. Several lawmakers, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and California Governor Gavin Newsom, harshly criticized Trump's behavior.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries described Trump as "vile," demanding Republicans denounce Trump’s actions. The debunked election claims in the video, part of a minute-long post, further fueled discontent. Trump's history of unfounded attacks on Obama, including false birther claims, added context to the uproar.

The incident underscores persistent tensions surrounding Trump’s rhetoric and highlights ongoing debates over race, leadership, and accountability in the political arena.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump’s video sparked bipartisan outrage for racism.

  • The White House claimed a staffer made an error.

  • Calls for denouncement and accountability intensified.

Which ethnic minority was you considering depicting as rats to prove point ?

I didn’t have any ethnic minority in mind.

I suggested eventually at some ‘point you get to understand how that might be a problem’.

You helpfully provided an answer without any such depiction having to be made, though in doing so you baselessly accused me of wanting to portray Jews as rats and vermin.

You really ought to retract that disgraceful and utterly baseless assertion, though for my own health and well being I’m not holding my breath on you doing so.

The most immoral man and the biggest liar in American history just continues his lies and fabrications, only this time the lie is even bigger than usual. Busted, Don!

Historical racist images and books dehumanizing African Americans in the 19th and early 20th century relied heavily on the Negro-ape metaphor, which was used to stereotype Blacks as lazy, dim and aggressive," said Phillip Atiba Solomon, the lead author of a 2008 study about the connection between discrimination and comparing Black people to apes.  "Such dehumanization and animal imagery have been used for centuries to justify violence against many oppressed groups."

Obama, as a candidate and the country's first Black president, was sometimes featured as a primate on T-shirts and other merchandise.

Trump was asked about the post Friday night while speaking to reporters on Air Force One . Trump said he had only seen the "first part" of the video and claimed he didn’t know the video included offensive footage.

And that is absolutely false.

"I didn't see the whole thing. I guess toward the end of it, there was some kind of a picture that people don't like, I wouldn't like it either," Trump said. He claimed his staff usually vet the content posted to his social media accounts, but said "somebody didn't" this time.

Asked if he would apologize, Trump said, "No. I didn’t make a mistake."

Yes you did Don, you made a fairly huge mistake this time. Add it to your other blunders and I think we're up to about 900 major mistakes in your first year. His denial is very disingenuous, as we all know he saw it, he approved it, he liked it, and it was then put out there for the world to see.

Trump told reporters "we took it down as soon as we found out about it," but that’s not true. The post remained online for hours after the White House initially dismissed widespread criticism as "fake outrage."

I agree, except that I doubt if Trump was aware of the full content of the VDO when someone shared it.

If you want to worry about hurting people, compare this to the two assassination attempts, just for starters.

The assassination attempts were wrong. However, the actions of 2 mentally ill assassins do not excuse this meme. There were multiple assassination plots and threats made against President and Mrs. Obama too. President Obama did not make a big thing about it. Remember the Ricin poison? Or the shots fired at the White House? Or the bombs seized? Multiple incidents.

Scott Turner, HUD Secretary, is the only black member of the current administration. I wonder what his reaction is? I wonder what SC Secnator Tim Scott is really feeling on the inside? NFL Hall famer Ray Lewis actually visited him at Trump Towers and I also what he is feeling right now? I don't believe the "a staffer posted it" story. I would have respect for POTUS if he said " I posted it and this how I truly feel" or "it's just a joke and everyone just relax".

Trump claims he didn't see the part with Obama in the video.

He said he only watched the first part of the video, which was about voter fraud.

But he didn't like the Obama clip. He's not the one who made it or posted it. And he didn't watch the entire video before it was posted.

So it's all been a misunderstanding.

It's not just a "video". If I was a black man I would be offended because of the history of racism, prejudice and utter hate that has been directed at African Americans. I am also a minority but the level of prejudice that has been been directed at me is nothing compared to what African Americans have endured throughout the history of America. Have you heard the term "Gorillas in the Mist"? It's not talking about the movie. I am not a liberal Deemocrat nor am I a conservative Repbulican but I can cleary see what POTUS posted or as he initially claimed reposted is wrong on many levels. An apology would be a good start but this POTUS does not admit he was wrong. That is his perogative.

So that makes it ok? Got it. Don't forget the NFL where almost 80% are black. Most of the rappers and hip and hop recording artists are black as well. Lastly the actor who has proabably made the most movies in the last decade is Samuel L. Jackson( you know Nick Fury of Avengers fame). To be accurate Barack Obaama's father was from Kenya and his mother was a white woman from Kansas. Kamala's father is from Jamaica and her mother was from India.

Blacks and other minorities have opportunities to climb the ladder.

Jason Huang of Nvidia .. etc.

So you want to continue to make a big deal about this video?

Real life matters more than this silly video.

Of course there will always be people in society who are racist.

But I once witnessed a black guy being racist toward a muslim back home. It's not only white guys that can be racist.

Anyway, this video is stupid and I don't know what they're doing or why they're doing it. But in fact, there is no systemic racism in society against minorities. It's not even feasible if they wanted to. The US will no longer be a predominantly white country in a few decades.

Yes it is a video and if Joe Nobody had posted it then it would be not be an issue. But POTUS posted it on his Truth Social account. That is the problem. Not the person but the position the person holds and the posted it. Do you understand now? In my past line of work (both miltary and police work) if a commanding officer or chief of police had posted something like this he would be gone rather quickly. A private citizen who does not a public position of trust posts stuff like this most us would not care.

The previous adminstration had access to the Epstein files.

If there was sth incriminating Trump, they would have exposed it and taken him down a long time ago.

And as evidence to back up your ‘belief’ you have me not mentioning Jews.

As I suggested, you would eventually get grasp the point that there is a serious problem with depicting ethnic minorities as animals.

You got the point without me ever having depicting anyone as any animal.

Getting you back to the actual offensive act under discussion ‘the depiction of black Americans, specifically the Obamas, as apes or monkeys’.

You clearly grasp that the historical practice of dehumanizing of a race of people by depicting them as animals is a prelude and justification to obscene crimes against humanity.

The historical context of depicting the Obamas as apes or monkeys resides within the history of dehumanizing imagery of blacks as apes or monkeys being used a justification for the enslavement over centuries of tens of millions of black people.

That enslavement and the dehumanizing racism that was its justification is a fact of history within the families of almost every single black American alive today.

I’m encouraged to learn you do understand that depicting an ethnic minority as animals is deeply offensive.

You only need now try to grasp why it is so deeply offensive for a sitting President of the United States to depict any black person as an ape or monkey. I’ve explained it for you above.

It is obscene racism of the kind you do understand, why you choose to minimize , obviate or otherwise excuse it is a mystery.

I guess we’ll have to take your word on that, though to be fair you wouldn’t be the first man to have absolutely no idea about what his wife really thinks.

I find it best to express one’s own views and not to claim to know the views of others, though the latter practice is somewhat of a thing around these parts.

I never said I was offended. I said it was inappropriate for the Presidnet of the United States to post something like this. My best friend is married to a black woman and she is offended but she understands that there will always be this kind of behavior. She said there is nothing she can do about it but to move on. Yes I have no idea what it is to be black but I know what it was like to grow up in America as an Asian man I have had my share of racisim, prejudice and hate directed at me. "where do you really come from?" Do you understand English? These "questions" were directed at me when I was a uniformed police officer in LA.
