There is no charge for this service.  I would not pay a single baht. You can tell them that special branch said there is no charge for this service, and that you should not be expected to pay anything.  This might scare them away from being crooks for something like this.

Thanks, i said exactly the same (SB said there is no charge) and the lady then demanded to see proof of having paid to SB. I had to make a quick dash home on a motosai to get proof of having paid 5000 Baht to SB. Then she came up with a new reason for not accepting the SB letter : it was addressed to the 'registrar of names' (Nai Thabien) instead of the 'head of the administrative section', who will then forward it to the registrar of names.

Rushed to SB and after a wait of 3hrs, a new letter was issued. Back to the Khet and she finally accepted it, and promised to issue the document with next 2 days. The whole day was wasted in this.

I lost count how many times this particular subject already has been posted and discussed in this forum over the last month

Because there are many bitter expats living in miserable circumstances here who simply cannot accept the fact that Thailand did far better than the advanced western countries.

    Think his neck now ok.

Police not stand on his neck, 9 minutes, not breathing.

often the crazy guy with knive, etc like this is because broke heart or Yaba.

    Is Pattaya. Maybe is both.

if is heart maybe police/court forgive that, no jail. Sympathy

if is Yaba with weapon at police, he be go jail 5+. No sympathy.

True, the police in Thailand always show a lot of empathy to emotionally affected persons, which is what is needed to heal them. No stupid show of strength and power, like a knee on his neck.

The name will never be used unless you choose to “activate” your new name after getting citizenship.  The default is that you keep your original name.  When I got my new name, the office I got my name from told me to let them know if I chose not to use this name so that it can be “released” for others to use in the future.  Basically they put a hold on the name and reserve it for you if you choose to use it when you get citizenship.  It does not show up on any official paperwork, royal gazette publishing or anything else.  It is just a formality and throwback to 100 years ago when it was required for naturalized Thai citizens to take a Thai name.

By the way I had a list of 5 names, and they were all taken.  I ended up coming up with a name on the spot in front of the name officer at the local Khet office.  You tell the officer your requested name and spelling and they will check their database, if someone already has the name, you have to pick another one.

Some have said that the officer makes the process difficult and asks you to tell them what the name means before they will register it for you.  I did not have that experience.  It was a quick in and out experience.

Make sure to make a copy of the form they give you because SB will take the original.  The Thai name is more a source of amusement to Thai colleagues when I tell them my “Thai” name.

Thanks for the information, i now have to sit down tomorrow to give some meaning to the surnames i made up! The khet lady also asked me to bring 7000 Baht for this name reserving, which sounds way too much.

  5. Sorry i know this must have been discussed somewhere on this long thread but could not find it reading the last 30 pages. I have been asked to reserve a Thai name & surname at my local khet. The surname should not be one that is already in use. So i wrote down the surnames of many thai friends and then jumbling up the vowels, made a list of 20 surnames to take to the khet on Monday. I would like to ask the purpose of this exercise and whether the reserved name is ever used in any document or other ceremony?

I already know Turkey, Ukraine, and probably Georgia will be open and pretty cheap to stay.

Maybe Bali, Nepal, and Sri Lanka too.

So I'm sure I'll get somewhere to ride this thing out for longer.

But in September there should be a more definitive list.

Must be exciting to lead such a thrilling life, is there no place you can go back 'home' to?

  7. We did not have to do anything of that sort when my child was born. The hospital issued a birth certificate with my name on it as father (but this has no legal use, as it is solely recorded depending on the mother's declaration that xxx is the father). The child can get into the tabien baan based solely on mother's nationality. In due vourse, child will also get a Thai id & passport.

Because no one here has been anywhere and if they had and just returned they would have been through quarantine and ok already. See? It is Xenophobic and highlights us foreigners in a bad taste way. More Thai have that darn virus coming back to Thailand than any race.

All they should have done was made him check in via scan or name and telephone number like all the Thai do. Period!

The Egyptian soldier, Sudanese girl, Estonian diplomat are just 3 cases in the last few weeks, who escaped quarantine after entering Thailand. Two of them later tested positive for Covid.

The article by Reuters is more interesting. It says, “we will allow visa requests from 1 August to 26 September”. This suggests that rather than an extension of the amnesty, people will be able to buy new visas without leaving the country. ‬

Again, this is NOT official yet. ‬

I wonder how accurate this thing is when sending out warnings?

If I pop into Bluport I check in and out within about 15 minutes.

If someone infected goes there 1 hour after me and I supposed to 'isolate'?

That's a 4 hour window they're talking about there, did the Egyptians arrive at 11 am and leave at 3pm?

Old english saying "Err on the side of caution" comes to my mind.

I'm sure the Thai women have the same conversations about trading in the old man who is getting fatter and balder and poorer for a slimmer, hairier , richer one

Perhaps, but only by the poor under-educated girls who have been exploited by their parents and friends into marrying an older farang who has in turn been exloited similarly and dumped by his farang wife?

I am perplexed that anyone would leave a bottle of water or any personal items unattended to go exercise/run. Theft would of course have been my first concern, but I just can't see drinking anything left unattended. Mind you, if the cap was sealed and appeared undisturbed maybe a level of confidence was thought that it was okay.  Still, if I bring something, it goes with me or I'm able to watch it all the time.

Umm...dangerous world out there, watch your every move. I am a runner and exercise in Lumpini park everyday for last 25yrs. These last few years, it is normal practice for hundreds of joggers to leave their water bottles or protein shakers in the bushes at any favourite spot and stop by during the laps to drink some water if necessary and pick it up on the last lap.
