  1. Of course the reason I am moving to Thailand is because of the girls. Can you think of a single reason otherwise? If it wasn't for sex, the world economy would collapse. No one goes to nightclubs to buy overpriced beer, drives a BMW to drop the kids off at daycare and why do women buy makeup and go to the hair salon? Where would Thailand be if the girls were fat and ugly?

no this is not true actually. check out the fools who go to Bed Supper Club and shell out huge bucks for example. All because the think it is "cool". LOL. You couldnt pay me to walk inside that place. I lived across the street for 10 years and never set foot in there, just laughed at those who did

  2. Because you are American.

Nearly all, if not all Americans i know of complain about cost in LOSTD,

i dont know of any other nationality that complain,

on the contrary the rest think its cheap.

That's because everything is cheap in America; we have Walmart.

Walmart and Costco seem to be everywhere in Asia but Thailand and Philippines for some reason.

I have come across costco in S.Korea but I have never seen a walmart anywhere in my entire life.

    Where are these walmarts?

on every busy street corner in the USA. Folks like you who havent seen or been in one are the reason many people think Thailand is soooo cheap. No way Walmart would operate in Thailand. Just walk into a Tesco or Big C and all they sell is junk plus aisles of cooking oil, rice, cockroach killer. LOL, its just a joke and Walmart wants no part of it...or any other top usa retailer like costco

  3. Exit border control areas aren't necessary. All they do is clog everything up. It's enough of a hassle checking into the airline, who needs an extra nonsense step. The airlines have the info. Border control officers are not necessary. Thailand airport procedures are stone age so every non USA citizen flips leaving the USA without going thru this foolish time wasting unnecessary nonsense known as exit border control. It would be nice to get online international check-in for Thais so they dont have to do stone age wait on regular check in line. It's backwards baby, the world has moved forward. Thailand stays back. Not going to change, just live with it

  4. First, i would like to congratulate you on becoming a father.

Second, I am genuinely confused. How could you possibly spend 100-120k per month in Thailand? (and presumably not notice)

I live in BKK with my GF and our 1 year old daughter. I have never counted up exactly, but i'll try now:

    • rent = 6k
    • electricity, water, internet = 2k
    • pocket money for GF = 6k (she buys all milk, nappies/diapers, and (some) food. And her transport)
    • money i spend on stuff for all of us = maybe 6k

So that's 20k for a small family in Bangkok and we don't feel like we scrimp much - i would say we are living "a good life".

Ok, there is probably some other (luxury) costs, which vary per month, and i haven't kept track of:

    • some alcohol, luxury food, massage, cinema etc etc = maybe 2k - 4k (hard to gauge exactly)

But still within 25k anyway, that's for sure. And even on an extravagant month (if we go on a trip to her hometown with Nokair), i couldn't imagine how it could go above 30k.

    Enjoy parenthood!

6000 THB for a condo for 3 in Bangkok ????

If this is not scrimping, then I don;t know what is ?

Well, cost of rent varies widely depending on what part of Bangkok you're in. Hell, there's areas where you can get a house for 6k. Not everywhere is as pricey as Sathorn, lower Sukhumvit etc.

I am certain that 6K will get you something palacial in BKK. I mean that's 200 whole dollars/ $6.66 per day. You got cinema in there and jet setting. This reminds me some years ago of the guy who couldn't spend more than 10K per month even with a starbucks a day and regular bowling in BKK. I get a charge out of this stuff. How do they do it?

  5. couldnt he just put a western toilet over the hole? can't cost much considering how little he is paying in rent.

He most certainly could. Must smell like roses in there.LOL. Isn't this thread about how much for a GOOD life in Thailand? That guy in BKK on 20K for a family of 3 is living a dream life. Why that 25K includes nappies, a trip to mrs Issan home, alcohol and luxury food items. Why he said he couldn't possibly spend more than 30K if he tried. I'll pass this one over to neversure. LOL

  6. It's a white golf ring with 1carat diamond

Wow I just bought my wife a 1 carat single stone 14K white gold engagement ring for $1150 on my USA trip in May. Those rings get hugely overpriced. We got a smoking deal but quality is not so high as you would expect for that dirt low price

  7. So does anybody think il have better luck if I take it back to the UK when I visit? And it was valued in the US at 7900

absolutely my friend wait till you get to UK. You won't get anything here for it, just a rape job. unless as I stated above you find a farang getting married or even not who wants to please his wife/gf. that's your only hope in this country. UK you can get at least something for it. If there's ever a choice to buy and/or sell something in a western country vs Thailand, it's a no brainer. The western country always unless u find a farang looking to buy what you sell or vice verse

another experience I had was buying a Sofa sectional unit that sold for 69K at SB furniture. this Belgian guy needed to get rid of it and I had new condo to furnish. Win win. I gave him 26K for the 6 month old thing. He may have had no buyers before he had to move. I found that guy right here on Thaivisa when I inquired about where to get furniture. Hey anyone out there need a nice Ringo for the GF/Wife?

OP I would consider putting a pic and perhaps a scan of the certificate right here. You never know. Where was it bought? what are specs etc

  8. I know a guy who got engaged to a lovely Soi 33 working woman with a daughter. He bought a $20,000 wedding set from the USA because he loved her so much. Sadly for the guy the woman's 5 year old daughter was deathly sick in the hospital and needed virtually all the vacation monies he brought for that 3 week trip. It was only like the 3rd day and he had little cash to make it thru the trip. Not nearly enough that's for sure. He felt good though because his money given to the wife saved the girl's life! I helped the guy to try and get his brand new Sony Laptop made in Japan bought in USA sold. Shockingly he was offered 26,000 baht for the laptop at pantip. I told him to instead sell it to me for that price so I bought that and his 2 very nice digi cams so this helped him make it thru. He did take the wedding set to a Thong Lor pawn shop where he was offered 10K baht for the $20,000 set. I advised declining. He held onto that and made it thru. Story has good end as he found a nice girl his own age (38 I think) at the end of the trip. Great guy and I'm glad it worked out. He's now married to that lady after 10 years with 2 kids. Getting back to the ring, based on that experience I don't think you're get nearly enuf to be worthwhile selling in this country unless u can find a farang like me who likes deals and buys stuff cheap. Sell it in a western country. Looks like computers are ok to sell. I think his computer cost him $3000 new so at 42/dollar , 26,000 baht he got $600 for the 3 month old laptop computer. I used that thing for as my everyday computer for 7 years. Still works! Japanese non Thailand bought quality. One of those digicams was a gem but I dropped it after 2 years. the other cam was pretty much junk

  9. A hefty fine and deportation.

The fine could be any amount and not able to pay or buy himself out, will result in a long stay at a Thai stink hole prison, where even the rats and flies avoid due to the extreme foul hygiene conditions.

Whatever, the OP`s days are numbered in Thailand or maybe turned into a living hell.

Hope he has a bottomless pit of cash at hand and a darned good lawyer who won`t be cheap?

    bullshit.

you are a hysterical old woman.

there is a 90 percent chance he merely gets fined.

Yes, it's just downright depressing that people can be so thoroughly brainwashed by government propaganda. Beetlejuice, If you are sincere about what you're saying, that is <deleted>' scary. I hope you're a rare breed when it come to the topic of suitable punishment for smoking a plant (and doesn't directly harm anyone). Sorry to say it, but if you're not taking the p*ss here, you were the kind that quickly got behind Hitler and ran to join his followers or army (because gov't propaganda told you to).

I would love to know why you think people who get caught with a bit of personal weed should be treated like a murder. Just what is it they're doing that harms your life and/or values so much?

Actually pal you've got it all wrong. It was really a government scheme to get the general population to use marijuana in order to make us stupid and paranoid. this way they can control the masses. Most of us fell for it too. Thankfully most of us stopped puffing it and have normal lives. Alcohol and other drugs are part of the scheme also. I just say let the guy who got caught with the weed be deported and never allowed to return. Would that be the end of the world for the guy? No

  10. Oh boy, if you need to ask this question you better think long and hard before proceeding. I bought land and built house in wifes name, all with my money but I trusted her 100% and still do so I never researched about the 50% law

  11. Not from Chiangmai. Waste of time and money flying from bkk to fly into Vientiane. I think I'll be ok. I know I could get mini can from airport. But chosen to pay an extra 400bht and have a taxi pick me up. Will see if I can find anyone going over before the bridge. If not will get the 20bht bus and taxi from Laos side. Thx to the helpful ones on here for advice.

the taxi wont save enuf time to make a diff. you'll make in to consul easy by minibus

  12. I lived with a Thai girl who said she left school after the 9th grade and she had a 2 year old kid and was 18 at the time. I suppose that is close to 13. The thought of marrying this girl never crossed my mind and finally she moved out after those 5 years. Getting into arguments with her proved futile as she was just too dumb. I met a 25 year old University grad with no kid after that and married her right away. She is so smart. I think she's smarter than I am. Life with her is a dream. I think you are much better off marrying someone with a brain than what I think the OP is referring to so I suppose I agree with that part of his post

  13. Oh and also I spend far more here than in the USA. I own(ed) my residences in both places but goods and services are Wayyyy cheaper in the US which makes the cost of living in Thailand far more expensive. OK I know I can rent a sweatbox in Pattaya or ON Nut for 5000 and pay 6000 for electric with AC on 24/7 but believe me I cant and wont live in that box. I wont live on street food for every meal either

Really? you can get a hour long oil massage for $7-10 in the US? Where? I am just curious where you lived in the US. My rent or mortgage costs alone in the US covers my entire monthly expenses in Thailand. My over head dropped 66% living in Thailand. Also all I eat is grasshoppers.

I owned my home in the NYC metro area. I could get my groceries for next to nothing with specials and coupons. Goods = dirt cheap. utilities equal. taxes not bad but more in USA but cost of goods more than offset that. no interest in getting massages

The most important thing you, and the majority of people when calculating their living costs, forget is that when you own a house or a car you still have to calculate the value of that property in your living costs. If you hadn't invested the money in the house, you would have invested it elsewhere, which would earn you an income.

When you own a car all paid for, you will still have to pay a lump sum in x year to replace it.

oh absolutely you are 100% about that. The scary thing is that the price of autos in Thailand is way way out there so that cost does need to be factored in and makes the monthly costs higher. Of course Thailand auto buying is insanely in the stratosphere compared to the USA. $20,000 gets you a low end junk Toyota if you're lucky, Glad you brought up this important cost
