  1. Signup to Rebtel. They will create a local Singapore number to enable you to call Thailand at local rate charges plus a small charge (usually about 1 cent a minute) to Rebtel. I use the service all the time to call my girlfriend in Thailand from the Netherlands and the line is always crystal clear. You don't need a PC to use it either and it works with both a landline and a cell phone.

At this particular moment in time though, the reverse isn't possible i.e. you can't call Singapore from Thailand, or anywhere else for that matter.

hi thanks for the reply, can i use my existing singapore number to use it? as the number to be call?

Yes, you don't have to change anything. You can use up to five numbers in fact. Just set the mobile you want to receive SMS on as "Preferred". Then in your Accounts page, you just add the ordinary phone number you want Rebtel to create a local call rate for and they'll SMS you confirmation to your preferred number. You'll see it appear on the site almost immediately anyway.

  2. Can you expand on the last sentence?

I'm looking to get a "PCI Express to USB 3" card for my laptop.

I'm also looking for a USB 3 hub (to replace my USB 2 hub) and some USB 3 HDD enclosures for my SATA disks.

Of course, it might be cheaper just to get a new desktop PC with lots of SATA ports on the MOBO, as I've got 6 SATA disks, 9.5 TB in total.

Ah... I see that they are available. Sorry about that.

You can add internal SATA ports via a SATA controller card.

  3. Dial +66 2 356 1111 then you have to press 9 not 1 for English, but they should be closed now till Monday morning.

    Good Luck.

No immediate hurry, it's just that my return flight between BKK and DBX is a codeshare flight with Thai. Because of that, I can't reserve a window seat using the carrier's (Emirates) site.

    I'll try again on Monday.

    Thanks anyway.

  5. Do bear in mind that the PC / laptop motherboard must also support USB 3.0

If the motherboard only supports USB 2.0 and you insert a USB 3.0 drive, it will slow down to the speed the motherboard supports.

If you've got a PC and a spare PCI Express 4x slot, you can install a USB 3.0 expansion card However, at the time of writing, this isn't possible with a laptop.

  6. I'd suggest either Karon or Kata Beach on Phuket. Reasons are ease of access and gorgeous beaches. You can take a direct flight by Air Asia from Chiang Mai to Phuket after which a taxi will only set you back around 500-600 Baht if you use Taxi-Meter (turn right as you exit the airport and it's the yellow kiosk at the end of the pavement).

There's an abundance of reasonably priced hotels there too. See Kata and Karon Hotels

You can even book a hotel+flight with AirAsia-Go

Udon Thani-Bangkok train derails at Khon Kaen after hitting fallen tree.

Wednesday, October 13, 2553. smaller_font.gifbigger_font.gifprint.gifvar addthis_config = {data_use_flash: false}lg-share-en.gif Udon Thani-Bangkok train derails at Khon Kaen after hitting fallen tree; six passengers seriously injured, service expected to resume at 6pm

dam_n trees got no respect for trains.

  8. As long as your flight to BKK via Helsinki is with Finnair and possibly a codeshare with another airline, you've nothing to worry about. Your luggage will be offloaded in Helsinki and then loaded onto the flight to BKK by the airline. You won't have access to it during that process. All you have to do is to walk from one gate to another.

Problems only arise when a passenger books a low cost airline to a given destination and then doesn't leave enough time to check-in again to the onward flight with a different carrier.

  9. I'm trying to call Thai Airways on +66 2 356 1111 which is their call centre number in Bangkok. I can get through initially after which I hear a message saying that if I want an English speaker, to press #1. After doing that though, all I hear is somebody sprouting on in Thai which I don't understand. They may be asking me to press another key, or it may just be the usual marketing crap you get when you get routed around the network, but because I don't speak the lingo, I've no idea what the hel_l they're talking about.

Has anybody ever called their call centre and managed to get through to an English speaker? If so, what did you do?

By the way, I initially called +66 2 232 8000 which is the airport ticketing and reservation centre, but the person I got online there told me I have to call the call centre and then hung up. :o

  10. This is a typical example of buying sight unseen i.e. online. I'd read a few reviews of the Sony Ericsson Aino mobile phone and most were neutral. But on receiving it today, I'm appalled to discover so many design faults with it that I feel inclined right now to stamp on the dam_n thing with a very large pair of Doctor Martins. So here's a list of rants.

    1. The earphones have a proprietary connector which means you have to buy Sony Ericsson specialist equipment if you want to swap those out for a different model. This design aberration means you're highly unlikely to find a different model anywhere in the shops and will have to buy online (if they're even available as a headphone type).
    2. The speakers are way too big and tend to fall out of your ears at the slightest movement.
    3. The navigation buttons are designed to be manipulated by someone whose fingers are about the size of a two year old. Any bigger than that and you'll be cursing every time you try to type something without pressing more than one key at a time.
    4. Predition cannot be disabled. So you're continually having to hold down the * + key in order to erase the choice the phone makes for you. Sometimes, you'll get the Smilies menu when you try that too. Once that appears, there isn't anyway of disabling it. This means that if you want to type the word "Attack", it's quicker to accept the word "Attraction" and then jump to the end of the word and delete the letters you don''t want. But it's time consuming of course.
    5. Trying to create a Playlist is nothing more than an exercise in futility. Once again, Predition will ruin your whole day as it tries desperately to outwit you.
    6. Once you've got your desired Playlist, you're then faced with the prospect of adding tracks to it. Here you have to use the middle button coupled with the slightly raised up and down buttons. I say 'slightly raised' but the bump is barely perceptable which means if you don't hit it quite right, the cursor will jump to the top of the list again and you'll have to scroll down to wherever you were all over again grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
    7. The phone does not like being turned off and takes several minutes to shutdown.

Do I have anything good to say about it? Let me think......

I'm still thinking....ask me again tomorrow, there must be something, surely?

I used to like Sony, but they seem to be employing complete morons these days who have no idea how to design a product which is both attractive to look at and efficiently functional. Shame on you Sony!

  11. The main problem with those shell seats is that they were designed for diminutive people. Anyone over 1.80 meters will crash into the back of the seat in front with their knees when attempting to 'recline'. Those seats even look uncomfortable before you actually go and sit down in them.

But I would never call it a world class airline by any means. Look at business class with that herringbone layout. Do you like looking out the window during a flight? If so, don't fly business class unless you prepared to crane your neck round 180 degrees.

Even first class has the seats slanted with your head towards the aisle. Complete marketing disaster if you ask me.

  12. It is abundantly transparent to anyone who has had even the slightest decent upbringing with morals, self respect and values drummed into them that a senior man of 50 years + having a sexual relationship with a teenager or 20 something is "OK" is nothing less then depraved, sick and twisted pervert who should be utterly ashamed of themselves and shouldn't even be considered as a valued member of society.

OMG...we have a preacher in our midst again.

It's not up to you to moralize how other people should behave. If two people love each other who the hel_l cares about how old they are?

  13. Unfortunately, history has taught us that market forces not politicians influence the stability of a country's currency. If currency speculators like George Soros are at work in the background, then the Baht will continue to appreciate regardless of what steps the BoT enacts.

Thailand is rapidly heading for a Catch-22 situation now. It's having to deal with rising inflation on the domestic front, yet cannot raise interest rates to curb that problem without sending the Baht into orbit once more.

Perhaps another devaluation is on the cards?

  14. In my early days here I guess I was kind of shocked by the sight of a couple with a 30/40/50 year age difference. Now, it's a fairly normal occurrence and don't give it much thought.

I do feel slightly annoyed ( for want of a better word ) when I see an especially old guy with a young wife/partner and a young child. To me it's totally irresponsible for a guy in his late sixties/ early seventies to be producing kids when he probably won't live long enough to see them leave school.

I disagree with that point of view since noone can predict how long somebody is going to live for, young or old. 30 yr olds seemingly in the prime of their lives have kicked the bucket for no apparent reason, so you can't use the same yardstick to compartmentalize everyone in that way in my opinion.

However, the quality of a man's sperm deteriorates with age and the likelyhood of an old geezer producing a deformed child increases tenfold after the age of 60. So yes, it can be regarded as irresponsible in that respect to consider having kids so late in life.
