Hi, can anyone please recommend good solicitors in Surin please???/ thank you
( i have seen the advert for isaan lawyers - do they have an office in surin?? )
-
Different consulates issue different types of visas/have different requirements. You can obtain 12 month Non-O visa on basis of visiting friends from the honorary consulate at Hull by post. Send in passport, recent passport sized photo, application form and fee.
ok thanks, so i guess it is important to shop around

i was advised by the birmingham thai consulate in the UK, that they can only issue non-imm type o visa's to people over 50, or if you are married to a thai person. the only other way they can issue this type of visa is if i find someone who can stand as guarantor. so even if i am visiting my thai girlfriend, the only way i will be able to enter thailand is on a 60 day toutist visa. i guess this is correct?

I have talked to a firm of international lawyers in the UK, who have dealings with Thailand, and they tell me if i have a Buddist marriage ceromony in Thailand, as that is not legally binding, then if you did ever get ''divorced'' or seperated at a later stage, the thai partner cannot claim anything from your estatel, as you are not married. so a prenup is not required. if you were to have children, then you would need one, and also if you were legally married then have one to, as your thai wife could start divorce proceedings in the UK.

thanks for the replies. is there anyway to get a residency permit by post but pay a little extra?? or do you have to go to korat in person. bit of a long way to go.
though i guess when i fly into BKK i could get the residency permit in BKK at the british embassy??
-
is the ''prakon chai office of transport'' in buri ram?? is this the closest driving license building to surin?
is korat the closest immigration office to surin? ( this is where i get my letter of residency )
sorry i am new to all this and it is all a bit of a minefield.

i would like to buy a bike / and eventually a car in thailand and obtain a thai license. from reading the forums i sort of know what i need. i will need non-imm 'o' type visa. i will need a letter of residency from immigration - but i might need to be on an extention of stay to get one - or i can contact the uk embassy for a letter of residency.
so if i am in surin, where is the closest immigration office that i can get a letter of residency? or if i get a letter of residency from the uk embasy in thailand, do i have to show up in person? and where do i get the license from?
this is from the thai visa.com website;
Obtaining a 1 Year Licence
What you need is:
Original passport + 2 copies of visa page and main page;
Medical report (any doctor can supply)
Address confirmation from immigration + 1 copy;
Current International Driving Permit
First registration, after that reaction test, colour test, another colour test, after that payment and making pictures.
For renewal
1. Expired drivers licenses.
2) A colour test & reaction test on computer is now required for renewal.
It is best if you already have an International Driving Permit,
otherwise you will have to take a written test and a driving test,
in you own vehicle.
After the first year you will be entitled to a licence for 5 years.

I have taken 11 years off my life. Can you do better

i have managed to get a quote from Barclays bank travel insurance, for thailand. just in case anyone was looking for insurance. this does not include cover for bangkok
-
during the last major eruption, the news channels were reporting the airports could be closed for many, many weeks. they were closed about 5 days.
so i would not worry about it.
do you have insurance sorted?? if so, who with?
-
yes, i do not think it is legit. they ''borrow'' some one elses signal. so you think best to avoid yeah? i would rather go legit, the TGF suggested it, that is all.
Not sure kunash because I don't know any one actually using it, only talking about it. I think the guys were saying its for people who already have a dish thru True/ubc.
There are loads of bars/restaurants around Surin showing the football on big screens and IF you can get broadband, many things can be downloaded. I use UKNOVA every day!
would uknova have the big brother shows? also the latest 'top gear' shows? ( when available )

Is it possible to live in Thailand without the ''family'' interfering in your life? is it possible to set some ground rules with your TGF, so she understands that you do not like ''in laws'' or ''family members'' giving you advice on what to do? the TGF has a habit of telling her sisters and friends about everything i do, the money and items i give her, where we will be living. i guess this is the thai way. some things should be kept private though. and in turn the sisters and friends tell other people. i just want a quiet life and dont want people interfering in my life and my TGF life. a lot of the 'interfering' is to do with money, - what to spend my money on, and who to give it to. i understand if you marry a TG, then you are also marrying the family. maybe i should find a house about 100km from the mum and dads

and satellite - set up 3500 then no monthly fee -
kunash
I have heard rumours around Surin about this set up.
It sounds good, but not exactly legit.
I think you have to have PC linked to TV so that they can update the signal every time UBC track your 'box'. Thats until the shop gets caught.
In the words of Forrest Gump.... Thats all Im gonna say about it!

After May 11 they are free, or probably with a service charge from Honorary Consulates.
i can wait till after that date before i apply. i will check their website after that date. thanks

Can i just post my docuements to the embassy or agency?

i just asked her, she says tt and t for internet - 3500 set up, then about 600 baht a month
and satellite - set up 3500 then no monthly fee -
-
up to 2000 a month each??
i have done a little searching on the forums - is CAT-CDMA a land line for internet?
-
Hi
when i return to surin ( 1km from bigc), i will rent a house and would like to get proper phoneline internet and also satellite. i guess there are several providers for each. i would like to pay up to 1000baht a month for each. i am not too bothered about reliability for the internet, but unlimited access is a must. for the satellite i am from the UK and like english football, and i like to watch the news, so whatever is best for that.
what do you suggest please and do you have a phone number or address. thanks

This question is asked regularly and often often here at TV, so search the forum and/or scan back through the last few pages of threads to get more info.
The short answer is that there is no simple answer. Probably "yes", but it really depends on the specific bank staffer that you deal with. As others have suggested, if you don't like the answer then try the bank next door. More details at www.burning-bison.com
