  1. Otherwise known as survival, for anyone with a job or running a business in the retail or tourist industries. But maybe that's not your problem?
  2. What magic happens at 80%? Israel has a vaccination rate higher than that and it hasn't stopped them experiencing a new wave of infections.
  3. Ah, but he's got grey hair and a white coat. He must be an expert.
  4. It's causing incalculable damage to future generations. All in the name of a monomaniacal obsession with a virus with a 99.5% survival rate.
  5. Would be helpful to have sub-titles on the video for an English-language community.
  6. Central banks are scared to death of cryptocurrencies. They can't control their use because the whole point is that they're decentralised. No doubt Thailand, like other countries have done already, will come out with their own "digital baht". This will be just a digital version of fiat currency, under the complete control of the central bank so they can print as much of it as they like. Unlike bitcoin, which has a limited supply and can't be created out of thin air.
  7. The trouble with this one is that you can't. Not if you want to keep your job, travel, go to normal places and do normal things. In other words, live normally. They've got you by the short and curlies.
  8. Using your argument governments should ban cash because criminals use it................oh, hang on, they already have.
  9. I'd avoid all government backed cryptos. They're just digital fiat currencies. They can be created at will by spendthrift governments, with the added beneft (for them) that they can track every transaction you make. At least Bitcoin is theoretically inflation proof. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoins.
  10. Fantastic value from Dusit Thani Laguna in Phuket. 15 nights sandbox (with buffet breakfast) for less than 2,500 baht/night.
  11. There's more to the UK than congested city centres, same as there's more to Thailand than Bangkok. Why do people have to talk in generalisations?
  12. Why let the facts get in the way of a good story? Many posters on here will jump to conclusions just from reading the headline, never mind the full post.
  13. I'm sure, like a certain other well-known fugitive, he has enough money to buy himelf several passports from other more accommodating countries.
  14. Critical thinking...........now there's a phrase we don't see nearly enough in these forums. And not at all in the upper echelons of government (and I'm not just talking about Thailand).
  15. So if they banned all traffic from the roads on the grounds there are more deaths from road accidents than from Covid, you'd be OK with that too?
  16. Keeps him centre stage for a while longer, no doubt with more funding. Maintains the ramp up of fear and hysteria that allows those in power to tighten their grip. Meanwhile, the mindless majority are clamouring to continue being treated like sheep.
  17. "Dr. Udom cited the situations in several European countries, where COVID-19 infections are rising rapidly, following the easing of restrictions and mass vaccinations, as he blamed the disease’s resurgence on complacency among their populations over such safety measures." Yes of course, blame the peasants for behaving badly. Ignore the evidence that there is virtually zero correlation between restrictions and case rates throughout the world. It's a seasonal virus, it will flourish in cool European winters, just like the flu.
  18. Yes, stay behind the sofa with your tin foil hat on. Even if we we survive Covid, by 2030 Bangkok could be under water if we don't "solve" global warming. So best to put your life on hold indefinitely and do not plan anything.
  19. A country that cares about its cultural heritage has the power to place preservation orders on any building of historical or architectural significance (e.g. the graded listing system in the UK). That's not to say I don't equally condemn the UK government's decision to sell off the Bangkok embassy. A perfect example of government double standards. The fact the Thai government has not given itself this power to preserve (or if it exists, doesn't use it) demonstrates their complete lack of interest in preserving buildings of national importance. Far too much money to be made in "incentives" for allowing the construction of yet another shopping mall in downtown Bangkok.
  20. That's what the article says, but they've failed miserably in the last couple of years to protect the Scala cinema and the old Bristish Embassy. What makes you think it will be any different this time? Money talks.
  21. And what's wrong with that? How would you feel if your business had been shut down for a year and a half? Or maybe you don't have to bother with trivia like earning a living.
  22. To adapt a quote from Churchill - There are lies, damn lies..............and Thai Airways' accounts. I wonder if they've depreciated the dozens of planes you see parked on the tarmac adjacent to the terminal when you fly in to Suvharnabumi. They've been there so long the paint on the fuselage has faded.
  23. I suspect the government wrote off a shedload of TG debt which the accountants miraculously turned into "profit". Loaves and fishes.
  24. I think you're missing the point. It's not just about investment, it's about control. When the billions of $ that these Middle Eastern governments can throw at sport allow them to dictate the name of the European Tour, divert GPs and World Cups to countries with zero sporting history and create a monopoly of the best players in the world, it goes beyond mere investment. And the comment about Wimbledon is not racism, it's just common sense.
