  1. Thai owner? Thought it was owned by a Japanese-American with a Thai wife. His wife was ok, but the ribs became too dry for me to go back to, after 5 years.

There is no such thing as customer service in Thailand.

There is. I have decent service in Hua Hin, much better than what I would receive in the Kata-Kamala strip. Same for my trips to Issan.

Perhaps it has to do with the labour shortage. It is difficult to find staff willing to work for minimum wage in a region that has one of the highest costs of living. I get the impression too that alot of workers have a chip on their shoulder, perhaps it is resentment.

I am not defending the poor service, but I believe it will become the norm.

It has become the norm! You will see, as I already have, an increase number of foreign trainees in hotels to make up for the p!ss poor attitude of the younger generations. The olders staff, in my experience, that have no political affiliations are great.

  2. The bike was securly parked until the idiot staff moved & dropped it, what I took exception to is being called a liar and his agressive attiitude towards my wife. As she explained we were paying cutomers, not begging for food or even looking for compensation..... I would have been happy with an apology that did have to be dragged from him like he was doing me a favour.

As an industry, in which I have worked for 18 or so years, the level of staff in Patong/Phuket is amongst the worst I have encountered in the world. The essence of Thai hospitality/culture has almost slipped away from the Thai people.........

  3. Nothing will help, 99% of the potatoes here are simply just not the correct variety.

    <snip>

I totally agree! The potatoes I see here look like what we call Yukon Gold potatoes. Russets are the preferred variety for chips or baked (jacket) potatoes, I do believe.

Correct. Russets make good fries. I prefer the Idaho Russet, which is probably the best and most versatile potato in the world. Dick’s in Seattle have the best fries you have ever had. They slice the fresh Idaho Russet, soak in salt water, then fry. I’m getting wood, just thinking about them.

I am not from Idaho, or related to anyone from Dick's

I agree that the Idaho Russet is the best potato that I've ever had. I always buy them over the Washington, Oregon or California Russets. And I can make killer fries, home fries or hash browns from them. The key is to soak them after they are cut, then dry. Too bad we can't buy them here other than in a frozen bag of fries. If we're lucky.

I beg to differ gentlemen! The best 'chip' potato/s are King Edward & Maris piper - no silly soaking, salting, brining needed. First cook is in oil & dripping followed by a higer temp crisping faze in veg oil.

  4. Nothing will help, 99% of the potatoes here are simply just not the correct variety. Pura's spuds are ok BUT silly prices! The potatoes we get here are "designed" tp grow fast & white. Before any google junkies start to flame me - 1 my family had a fish & chip shop for many many years 2 I have been in the food industry for 18 years in 6 different countries.

Finally you may get lucky with a good 'flowery potato' here & there, you can make a very quick test - not 100% but good rule of thumb. Slice the spud in half & wipe it across your cutting board, after a few minutes if you see a flowery residue (will look like liquid paper ish) then there is a fair chance you can get half decent chips.

  5. Not so helpful :-(

Hugely helpful if you're willing to learn. You don't have a clue about how insurance works.

Obviously he/she doesnt have a clue - HENCE the question! so if you have nothing usefull to add do us a favour...............

Yet another thaivisa senior member with poor reading comprehension . My post was useful because I told the OP that cheechoo spoke truth. What else is there to add?

My reading comprehension is perfectly sound - perhaps he did speak the truth. I belive this was not the question, perhaps context should be explained in detail to you. As a non senior member perhaps it was lost on you.

  6. Much of Bombay. Even a lot of new roads give you the impression that you are riding on oval wheels. Pulling away from traffic lights surrounded by buses, trucks, tuk tuks, scooters, taxis that are replicas of 1950s Austins, elephants and holy cows, you could be excused for thinking you're a contestant in the Wacky Races. All that's missing is Dick Dastardly and Muttley.

I used to live in Mumbai/Bombay and rode an Enfield Bullet Thunderbord 350. Yes - the roads are terrible with huge, truck-swallowing pot holes, dust, dhood wallahs (bicycles with milk churns), cows, pigs, beggars, more dust, autorickshaws, constant traffic jams, misleading or missing road signs, constant beeping of horns and even more dust (except in the monsoon when it floods). But ..... the local authority is incable of building the Metro so there's no equivalent to the BTS to hold in the fumes, and because there's such chaos and so many bikes the traffic jams are total; i.e bikes and cars both come to a stop - so road speeds are very low in the city making it less scary than it first appears. So Bangkok's Sukhumvit Road is still worse in my view.smile.png

Once again, I invite you to Phuket! Chok dee
