  1. Oops . .the headlamp brackets look out of place. And whats with the lamps themselves, they just look wrong, the top one looks as though it's adjusted for surface to air missiles.

The forks and discs look the biz, so does the power plant.

The seat doesn't look prostate friendly either

And the colour scheme is arseways, with a complete make over though, it could be a funky looking tool.

  2. They all look a bit like a 30 year old Honda Civc hatchback

If they looked like the 30 year Civic 3 door hatch, it would be a vast improvement on these current shapes, I always thought the early Civic 3 door was one of the better designed motors of that period. At least on par with the early Golf which I thought was also a good design. They both looked original and individual with no hint of the dreadful 'jelly mould' look that was to change not only cars but bikes design too.

Can't imagine any of these bland looking jam jars would ever achieve 'classic car' status, certainly not in the way that both the Civic and Golf have.

I guess they look marginally better than the current Civic and Vios, (each new model seemingly uglier than the previous) but only because they are hatchbacks, and there is less opportunity to make those ugly boots, one can only wonder what drugs some of these car and bike designers are on, <deleted>' ugly pills,:bah: it's beyond me.

  3. " I always carry a buff cloth for just that. "

    Just a little too gay . . . . .dear boy.

Your the only one having the gay thoughts. Keep your insinuations to yourself..!

:P Velocette may be mistaking buff cloth, for "jack rag", something he may be familiar with?

How very explicit, doubtless your one of those who likes to talk dirty B) ,

However if your unfortunate enough to undergo prostate surgery, and your age suggests that you may be, you'll find that after surgery you'll probably be experiencing 'retrograde ejaculation', in which case your seaman will have gone into your bladder, saving you the trouble of catching it in your tea towel :D

  5. I'm glad they didn't con you, tradesmen from hell are world wide. It's even more serious when they operate out of name establishments like Proton. Perhaps if your someone were to notify head office and give the name or rank of the perpetrater it would send out a strong message, and given he has a crowd of workers observing him, it might reduce the chances of it happening again if he faces some consequences for his behaviour.

Anyhoo, the important thing is he didn't rob you, which is really what he was trying to do, there's no polite way to put it.

  6. Well Hopmaster, I normally travel with a hard covered case (maybe fibreglass/plastic) and it is often damaged, with chunks taken out of it. I know that airport workers throw them about and drop them, I think it's normal practice. If your case is a soft one, doubtless many hard ones like mine will be dropped on top of it, from a height, also many very heavy soft ones will land on it too.

If you had the the original protected boxes that it came in, it might have a better chance of surviving, but I doubt wrapping clothes around it and putting it in a normal case would offer much protection. Also I imagine it would take up a lot of room in your case, not to mention the weight, but perhaps you plan to bring no luggage for yourself, you might want to weigh your clothes etc and pc together to see that you don't incur extra luggage charges.

Mind you, if it's an elderly pc, that you don't need in 3 years time when you return, you could risk it, if the screen was damaged you could buy a cheap one here. Having said that. there are now cheap hand held devices that you can go online with, that are cheaper than laptops, but I'm sure your aware of that.

Either way, good luck with your travels.

  7. I said nothing about 'copywright'. obviously anyone can claim anything, the Montessori Method has been plagiarised by nearly all teaching establishments, and so called educational publishers.

I know of inner city teachers working with marginalised children who have had excellent results using the Monty, and of course Marie Montessori herself had great results working with what would have been street children.

Sorry to hear that your Montessori Methods with the less gifted were not effective.

Have you ever watched a cat teaching its kittens how to hunt, that also is a Montessori method? The important thing is the mother's involvement. The Montessori method needs parental involvement and support also, my less able students (remember I am talking secondary level), never has this support from infant school upwards. Don't confuse ability with intelligence, it is more related to motivation.

You used the term "less gifted" not me B)

As I discovered in the Philippines, Street kids can be highly motivated because opportunities are very rare.

Your "marginalised children who have had excellent results" I suspect are the children of third world immigrants who still value a free education.

Sorry I don't understand the cat and kitten reference in relation to a teaching method.

Sorry also that you feel the term 'less gifted' to be un pc, I'm quite comfortable with using it, less motivated, less willing, less able, are all lacking the 'gift' to be motivated or to be able, to be truely motivated is a gift.

As for parental involvement, the children Marie Montessori taught were both homeless and parentless.

Sure third world immigrants are more appreciative of free education than the inner city indigenous Brits.

However the educational system that can effectivley address the needs of children whose parents are chaotic drug users, has yet to be addressed.

  8. Sounds like a screwed up version of Montessori, but with Thai "logic". WHAM!!!

You beat me to it. You forgot to mention that the Montessori method works well only with able students.

Really, only with 'able' students ? . . . .how long have you been teaching using the Montessori method, to come that conclusion ?

Firstly the method is not copywright, any institute can claim to use these methods, so your understanding may be different from mine.

Now to answer your sarcasm , about 20 years with secondary students. Any further sarcasms?

  9. Curiously, 'Slash' is cockney slang for 'piss' as in "I'm going to take a slash" . . . . . . . . I always found GnR, to be rather pedestrian and dull, Axle uses a very effected vocal style that I find irritating, and his gyrations are cringeworthy.

I thought Slash looked like a pantomine dame, and lets be honest, have you ever heard him play anything resembling a decent riff ? . . . .even Fast Eddie from Motor Head could play decent riffs, it's what real guitarist do.

  10. I'm curious as to which of the diesel pick ups gets the best mpg. But it seems that few owners are interested in this survey, only responding to threads about increasing power and speed, how rockn'roll of them, I wonder if they all look like Keith Richards B)

MRO's 2.5 D Max gets a staggering 17 on HiWay, I find that amazing for such a tall heavy tank of a vehicle, as good or better than some small cars, but I don't doubt his figures. While his Vigo can only manage 10-12 on HiWay.

Sadly there are not yet enough stats to tell which of the 2.5's or 3.0's are the best. but the 2.5's would seem to have the advantage.

Few of the older 2.5's appear to have an autobox, so to get these better mpg figures a manual seems the only choice.

Anyhoo Hangje, a good thread :)

  11. Macrobiotics was popularised in London in the 60's, it was my first introduction to brown rice and real bread (as in brown flour and unleavened, no yeast).

I remember being told that the Victorians were responsible for introducing white rice, white bread, and refined white sugar.

And that the poor Chinese and other Asians all aspired to eat the more expensive white rice as it was the choice of the upper classes, ironically the poor suffered more from malnutrition as rice was often all they could afford, and being white meant it had far less nutrition.

  12. There's a group of us that hang out most Friday evenings, in a farang owned bar just down the Bangna-Trat, close to King keow road. I'm not sure if it would be any quicker getting there from your place than

it would be to go into Bangkok, mind.

Thank you Kalbo, kind of you to offer, but as you suggest it may be a long haul, either way, I shall find out where it is and see if it's practical. Cheers :)

  13. Well I know of a few guys that live in Chedie, if we don't have one lets find one and make it ours!!

Thank you ExC5 for your optimism ! . . . . . .but can't help thinking of that expression spoken in a strong Scottish accent " Happy to meet, is sorrry to greeet come Micklemuss ! " (Micklemuss being Christmas)

Anyway black humour aside, will need to find out from my better half where exactly Chedie is, it's not an area I've heard of. But thank you for your invitation, and I shall get back to you when I know where it is :)

  14. There is an English style Pub called The Toby Jug down Sukhumvit Soi 50 (there is a large Tesco Lotus on that corner, next to the On Nuch BTS Station). Go down Soi 50 until you reach the Expressway, the Pub is on the left, virtually under the Expressway.

Good English type food and the owner - a Thai chap - is interesting to chat to.

    Patrick

Thank you for the info Patrick, I shall get my wife to explain exactly where the above place is, as I only have a vague idea where it might be, it's always interesting to visit new 'establishments' and English food would be a bonus too. And curious that a Thai should run an English style Pub.:)

  15. Which part of Samutprakarn are you in ?

I live near the crossroads of Teparak Road and Srinakarin, between Foodland and the Imperial World shopping centre, also close to a large Tesco Lotus on the Srinakarin. I mention Foodland as it's known as one of the few supermarkets that cater for Farangs in the immediate area.

  16. Samut Prakarn covers a large area. I used to live in Phra Samut Chedi and still don't know of any such establishments. Good luck.

Yes your right it does cover a large area, I remember going to Phra Samut Chedi, to visit the floating market there and renting a canoe out, quite a charming place.

  17. I'm retired and live in the unfashionable area of Samutprakarn, the uncool suburbs of Bkk, apart from the people themselves, there is little to recommend it. But I was wondering if there are any bars in the general area, Food Land , Imperial World etc, where English speaking guys can go for a beer and just shoot the breeze with other ex pats.

I'm not too optimistic as there is no heading in TV for Samutprakarn, which would lead me to believe that there are few Farang in the area, but just on the off chance that there may be a secret enclave of ex pats who frequent a bar locally I thought I'd put this post out. Going to Bkk for a few beers is too much of a palaver :)

  18. In the UK car dealers use this term 'Orphan Colours' to describe cars that are very hard to sell, because people find the colour of the car unappealing or just downright ugly.

In the 70's there was a popular colour for furniture, fabrics and cars, a sort of yellow mixed with green, I called it 'Baby Shit' cos to me that's what it looked like, yet all over London I saw baby shit coloured cars.

I've passed on buying a few cars and pick ups here because of their colours, some might say, mmm maybe I'm a little too gay, I don't care, colour is important. Actually whats really important is the SHADE of the colour, I had a Landrover Safari many years ago, it was two tone, a light blue body and a cream roof, and it was one handsome vehicle, but normally I would never buy a blue car.

Probably the one of the worst is Maroon, or chestnut, followed by Green (I know BRG can look good, but getting the right shade is not easy)

Just remembered another pet hate, the dreaded Gold paint, in all it's horrendous shades, I know it's a cultural thing here to make things look like Temples, or gold bars, it's an Asian and Arab thing, also rich Africans love it. I know in London many wealthy people put Gold trimmings on their Rollers or whatever . . .aaarrrgghhh. Probably got gold plated taps in the lav too.

I can live with White, which comes in many shades, although it can look cheap, but in this climate it's a winner, but I prefer a good shade of cream, with either Black or Red leather seats.

Black is fine, again many shades, some with lots of blue, hard to keep looking clean, and again maybe too hot for Thailand.

Many shades of Grey available too, looks ok, but again holds the heat like Black.

Silver is always acceptable, common place but a good compromise .

Maybe it's better to be colour blind, many car owners are, and seem quite happy driving around in their 'Orphan Colour' cars. Lucky people.:)

  19. Bankruptcy AND divorce . . .double tradgedy, it doesn't get much worse.

The effort, time and expense of putting that house together must have been a labour of love and blind faith, creating their own little garden of eden and dream house, heartbreaking for them both, I'm sure.

As for the practicalities of selling a property like this, which is such a personal statement regarding design, and I imagine high maintenance with all that timber. One can only hope that they find a suitable bohemian buyer who falls in love with it and has the cash to buy it.

  20. And perhaps on a different forum, you might not be subjected to the bitter rantings of the our misognists who are always spewing forth their bile, the mere mention of Thai and female in the same sentence, winds them up no end :bah:

What to you was a simple question, was to them an opportunity to vent their rage, funny old world :D
